When you take off the nostalgia goggles, you really see how cheaply-made it was from the fonts and Silicon Graphics interface. Nintendo needed games for the 64, so it was impressive for the time. The only time I had a hard time with 150cc is when I played it recently and it seems like any fourth course of a cup and even Skyscraper has a glitch where the AI just keeps getting faster and faster and I actually can't keep up, even found DK repeatedly ramming a wall on Bowser's Castle once. Anyone else have that happen?

>> No.7791096

Mario Kart 64 had some had some weird glitches going on with the AI, specially if you managed to throw it out of the track. Two things would often happen, either the AI character you sent out of the course would be stuck in the same position for most of the duration of the race, or Lakitu would put the AI racer far ahead than where it should be placed. I remember this happening very often in Royal Raceway.

MK64 is kind of ugly and also a very simplistic-looking game, the controls are slippery, the AI is the worst. Single-player mode is boring. It has little content but I guess that can be forgiven because its old. On the other hand multiplayer is really fun, music and courses are pretty memorable, the gameplay is simple, but addictive. I still keep coming back to play it once in a while and beat all the cups, and I still hate it and think this is the worst MK ever made. I don't like this game, I don't think its bad, I think its mediocre. overrated and a case of nostalgia goggles at its finest. When people say "MK64 is the best kart game ever made" what they're really trying to say is "I had lots of fun with my friends, I don't care about anything else".

>I can drift traffic on Toads Turnpike without bumping into anything.
Keyword here is "drift". Yes, once you learn how to drift and you get used to the controls/driving physics, its somewhat fine enough to beat the game. Still I can't, for example reliably avoid some obstacles like the snowmen on Frappe Snowland or get some item boxes. I don't know how to explain it, I feel like you have to actually fight against the controls everytime you steer your kart, it's just not right.
>Never would I even come close to not taking home 1st place on any 150cc cup
But I'm not saying its hard, after all the game has infinite continues. I said it was boring. AI in this game feels... really artificial? in other kart games the CPU players will try to act like real human players, here they will ignore obstacles and unreasonably boost their speed when you're not seeing them. Sometimes two or three CPU characters will appear so you can hit them and they will come back at full speed in 10 seconds like if nothing happened so you can hit them again, the rest of the characters might as well not be there. And If you happen to fall or something and the AI takes first place and disappears from your screen? yeah, well unless you use a shortcut that cuts through half the course good luck seeing that fucker again.

Yeah they are a menace. I know exactly what you're saying and now I think about it I had more trouble picking up item boxes on toads turnpike which should be easy considering they're lined up in a straight line than I did sticking to the middle of the road avoiding traffic.

Only time I found the AI tricky was on tracks you couldn't cheese like Moo Moo Farm and Banshees boardwalk. Generally I view Kart Racers as party games and nothing more.

I've played it on emulator for the first time today since I sold my N64 a decade ago. For me it's the best retro Mario Kart.

SMK is a really nice start to the series but the AI is unfair as hell because it spams a ton of custom items. It's a hard game, can be very frustrating. Most epic Rainbow Road though.
Mario 64 has good RNG, when I failed it mostly felt like it was solely due to me driving like a retard. The rubberbanding is cheap but if I was better at Mario Kart I could definitely unlock the Mirror mode. It's a fair game, driving still feels nice, it aged well for a 5th gen game. Rainbow Road is a joke though.
Double Dash seems more suited to technical players. Maybe it's because I didn't grow up with a Gamecube and haven't learned to micro-boost consistently, but it feels kinda underwhelming at times desu. The soundtrack is forgettable compared to the MK64's fusion jazz and SMK's underrated OST. Still a great game to play casually with friends to this day though.

The soundtrack is forgettable compared to the fusion jazz of MK64 and SMK's underrated OST. Still a great game to play casually with friends to this day though.

The tracks themselves look like they have about the same polygonal quality. The only thing Tiny Arena has over Wario Stadium is the more detailed stadium walls.

I played with my normie friends once. One fucker touted "I'll fucking crush you I'm the best at 8" They couldnt grasp the driving physics and couldnt make a clean corner without eating the wall. Their reaction ? "Game sux" of course. Its pretty barebones though and I would rather play the WII game.

This site really is full of zoomers. Game looks like shit though compare to other racers on the console.

It's not nearly as good as CTR, which is a much more dynamic and aggressive game

I can understand that for Mario Kart: Super Circuit and Mario Kart: Double Dash, handling is not as kind, but Mario Kart 64 handling is very easy.

Like what? F Zero X? Top Gear Rally? Mario Kart looks better than most N64 games.

to be fair wasn't F-Zero X 60 fps? Game likely looked better in motion
