That is a massive change to the engine and runs completely outside of the scope of mdf21's goals. So I don't know about the rest of the game, but if you pop Animals (the album, not the band) in your disc drive, the opening track will play on the tram ride into Black Mesa and it somehow fits ridiculously well, at least until the vocals come in. I don't know how or why, I discovered it by accident many years ago, but it totally does. I imagine the rest of it doesn't match at all but the intro totally does.

Bug report for the latest beta. I tested in vanilla QuakeSpasm 0.93.2 unless otherwise stated:

* Picking up Jump Boots while having Super Jump Boots active will prevent double jumping (failure noise will emit after the first jump) unless a second pair of jump boots are picked up, which it then ignores the Super Jump Boots entirely.
* Super Jump Boots removes all Jump Boots on expiry if they they were picked up first.

* Holding the movement keys while pull grappling to teleporting trains will cause the player to retain the movement as if the train was still moving in that direction (see webm). (Bonus - holding the pull grapple on the conveyor belt in the test map will flail you wildly when it reaches the end of it's path.)
* The grappling hook key in QuakeSpasm swaps to the Fireaxe instead (works in Spiked).
* Invoking the grappling hook via "impulse 22" does not work in QuakeSpasm (works in Spiked).
* The bind for the grappling hook lacks a "No weapon" message if the player doesn't have it in the inventory.

* Gibbing a Gaunt brings up this in the console: "SV_STARTSOUND: gibs/gibs5.wav not precached"

Might just be easier to stick to Spiked.

impulse 22 works fine for me in QS. seems like the Horn got borked at some point though.
and I disagree about "sticking to Spiked". AD did that and ended up shipping without models. it completely ignores unrecognized commands and missing assets. fine player-side, but worst choice for dev.

Retested the grappling hook again in regular QuakeSpasm, it indeed works. I think what happened is I typed in "impulse 9" to get all weapons, but the grappling hook doesn't seem to get added to the player's inventory.

Got a few more bugs and suggested features as well; I only tested in normal QuakeSpasm this time:
* If you "impulse 9" your inventory, you can't recycle through Grenade Launcher (slot 6) types until you pick the items in the world
* A sigil piece is hidden on the HUD unless you swap to either multi rockets or multi grenades.
* DoA ammo types needs ammo icons next to the player's health.
* The Laser Cannon and Grappling Hook are not displayed on the player's HUD.
* The anti-grav belt is still broken, but you probably already knew that.

Guys, I'm starting to appreciate Sunlust. Loving it's hostile atmosphere, and the fights aren't actually that hard to figure out.
Tbh though, this screen was a bit of immersion breaker. I like reading ridiculous intermission texts in my doom wads :( At least there're nice seamless transitions between some levels.

You mean Brutal Doom? It goes here, but it's also a subject that has been discussed to death, some like it, some don't, some hate it.

It's buggy and has some design problems, but to some the gameplay is enjoyable. Some would say that Project Brutality is a better continuation of Brutal Doom. The fact that Mark is now doing his own game is for the better, he's been spinning his wheels for years on BD and has diluted the qualities its had with scope creep and updating for the sake of updating, and doing his own levels will be good, because that's honestly something he's good at when he actually does it.

Yeah, I don't recall how UT bots are set up- I know 2k4 has weapon preferences but don't remember if 99 does- but Q3A has separate bot stats (accuracy, awareness, turn speed, jumpiness, etc) and then a separate file for each bot that lists all the (vanilla) guns and the order in which they'll use them if they find them. Crash's is set up to always favor the Shotgun super heavily and basically ignore everything else, because of course the person who trained Doomguy will worship a double barreled shotgun, which works alright in the training map and its whole one hallway of space but very poor outside of that.

What's the honest consensus on custom status bars in vanilla megawads (both normal and DM, but specifically DM for my case)? Are they welcomed or viewed as obnoxious?

Personally I'm open to the idea of it provided they look good and don't change Doomguy's face to some fat guy (See Greenwar 2) and the numbers and background are legible and clean. Yea. Rowdy Rudy 2, Syringe, Three Is a Crowd and Mutabor were all cacoward-deserving wads last year, but our "vanilla enthuatists" always seem to forget those. Aside Criticality (which did get a runner-up) and Wormwood EU (which was mentioned as challenge level pack) there really wasn't any boom wads that employed modern Skillsaw or Ribbiks influenced combat. Well, that's a pretty standard classic comic/animation thing (e.g. Heavy Metal or 2K AD), one that I happen to enjoy a lot- take a vintage or classic fantasy setting, and give them sci-fi tech while keeping everything else the same and seeing how things would change. So as to not appear autistic I'll elaborate:
You can have a good level be entirely linear; whether linearity or nonlinearity are better is entirely subjective. Personally I prefer linear levels because holy shit, do mapmakers often fuck up nonlinearity and make it hard as fuck to navigate and find where to go. They're usually unbalanced too; one route will have better resources than the other and stuff of the sort. Purely luck. So be sure to take these into account when designing something with several routes.
Having a level 'loop' is in no way a factor that makes a level better either. Why would it? Sure, it can be a way to design your layout, but that doesn't mean it's inherently a good thing or necessary. You can have a level that constantly introduces new areas instead, and maybe requires you to backtrack by teleporter or by foot back to a key door.
Multiple entrances to different rooms is good advice. It's often welcome, but doesn't work all the time. It's possbile it limits enemy placement and can be overall unnecessary, or lead to confusion in progression.

As for the lack of inspiration, that's bad. Even the original designers looked at movies and images to acquire ideas from. There's a reason every game has concept art done for it. That's pretty much what Romero was doing sketching out his levels in paper before working with the editor, too.

It's for EX, I'm also shooting for the steam version but I don't know all the limits of that one. The red guy is a player bot, like those dudes running around on the title screen, and they're pretty much just chain gunners with fucked up AI. The problem is he doesn't wake up properly and tries to attack every monster he sees when he does, so he pretty much only works in scripted encounters, which is fine cuz that's how most vanilla wads do it. To elaborate - it is definitely good to have texture variety within a level. But you dont need to have texture variety within every room or area in said level. In fact, monotexturing an area can make it memorable to the player, as they can remember "the red brick area". Finally got Hexen II's MIDI music to work in Hammer of Thyrion on Linux Mint.

The solution was easy — I just had to make sure timidity.cfg is set to use freepats, which it wasn't doing for some reason despite freepats being the default choice according to the comments in the file, because either by default or due to something else I installed, it was set up to use something that wasn't working. But I don't know anything about MIDI so I wasted a fuckload of time searching the internet for an answer. Everything I could find about Timidity was apparently written for people who already know what they're doing in regards to MIDI, etc., and I can't be too mad about that because I guess I'm just extra stupid, but then all I could find about the sound-related errors logged by Hammer of Thyrion was people saying "dude just download the CD music and disable MIDI lmao" and other helpful advice such as "never mind, fixed it".

Damn shame. I do the clovr thing, but I don't have the guaranteed time to set up something custom on a schedule like that (hence why my shit is all automated).
But if someone else doesn't step up (like sunday night shitshow guy) I can set up a random grabbag dm/ctf/golf/cyberrunner/whatever server that night and time. Won't be the same, but it'd be consistent anyway.

I'd have to shift my hexen coop schedule over two days so they don't conflict, but that's trivial.

First time playing the Duke 64 port for PC and so far it's good.
Some secrets are removed,some weapons are different as well.
No Ripper and Rocket Launcher so far,I got dual SMGs and a Grenade Launcher.
I actually like these sprites better than OG Duke 3D.

Every profanity and sexual content is removed,no music but there's some Wang.

some notes: Droles seem to sometimes act less aggressive than I'd expect them to, will investigate later. left Vermis' attack frequency constant - supposedly in Quoth it's lowered on easier difficulties, but there's no exact code available. also Vermis bugs out and doesn't get properly initialized if it's provoked into infighting before it's fully uncoiled, but that bug is in the current Quoth release as well.

Even if I like Duke soundtrack the most and SW has more variety in gameplay,I feel it's the best of the Build trinity.

Even with its difficulty spikes,It's a challenging experience with an amazing weapon set.
