Found this guy while I was helping a buddy do a property clean out. I plugged it in and it seems to work. What can I actually do with it, can it /vr/?

it's a US version of the ZX81 which was the ZX Spectrum's precursor. it's basically a toy/novelty with black and white graphics and no sound. there's not much you can do other than write tiny BASIC programs because there's only 4k of memory unless you have the 16k RAM expander.

I figured as much, although I did hope to get some basic space invader clone type game working on it. If you could load programs from a cassette, you could load them from an audio file coming through an aux cable, right?

Yes there is a program for this and also quite a lot of programs available in audio file format.

Not much along the lines le ebik maymay romz. Everything ever written for it is shit, unless you consider the skill an ingenuity it took to squeeze anything out of such a basic machine. Back in the day it was a great way to learn and experiment with a computer but pretty useless today.

Yes, much simpler than using a modern IDE and emulator
