The meta (if you could call it that; I'm simply the best and this is the playstyle I find to be most effective and enjoyable) is actually to go big on weapons and minimal on tools. If it isn't useful to you mid-fight, don't hold onto it. I've even taken it to the extreme of not carrying a medkit at all, because that's 45 blocks of dead weight during combat and you can almost always find one when you need one. With such overwhelming offensive output, your enemies rarely even get the chance to seriously wound you. Your ability to be fast is less dependent on your base mobility and more on how long you can go without having to stop. A lightweight loadout is still going to play slower than a heavy one if they have to keep backtracking for supplies.

Those are great maps but I personally wouldn't recommend them for PB. You will want something with room to use the mobility and movement and also lots and lots of demons, preferably higher tier ones to make use of the massive amount of fire power you have.

That's probably how its gonna be. Like, all that stuff with Arena Eternal is just different plane of existence or whatever that doesn't have a direct effect on various universes.
However, if we would go with some lore bits from Champions, Quake & Quake 2/4 universes might be connected in a way. Only if you're willing to assume that Slipgates, Grunts, Visor & Armagon led to the creation of Strogg, which doesn't sound that bad honestly.

Today I finished the 4th and final episode of Duke Nukem 3d. Aside from the expansions that is.

I ended up liking revisiting Duke 3d way more than I expected to if I'm being honest. They had more cheeky easter eggs and charmingly dumb Duke voiceovers as well as naughty little gags than I remembered plus I never really played episodes past L.A Meltdown before so that was all new.

Anyway short ''review'' and notes of the levels :
1. It's Impossible :
I find Duke ''pistol starts'' more interesting than DOOM pistol starts, while the pistol isn't all that powerful it feels way more satisfying to use in general and since the Chaingun Cannon does NOT share ammo with it, when you're well stocked on pistol ammo you might as well use it. So, this level is kind of a clusterfuck since you start off with only a pistol and not a whole lotta ammo for it. So you kinda have to learn how to pick your battles and slice the pie into rooms with multiple foes so you don't get all of them shooting at you at once. Once you get the chaingun cannon, shotgun and most importantly, pipe bombs, the level isn't that bad but before that it can be. I misunderstood the IMF symbols to mean ''International Monetary Fund'' instead of Impossible Mission Forces that the level is supposed to be a base of and I guess kinda references to spy films etc. Overall a quite decently flowing level with interesting enemy configurations and fun action.

2. Duke Burger.
I really want to get asperging into Duke 3d level design in general but I'll save that for later. Right now I'll say that while having an interaction with the drive through was funny, making it the method of getting the blue keycard was hard to find. I suppose such a relatively small level has to make up for it somehow.

Despite the idea being kind of wacky to make a burger restaurant a whole level it works surprisingly well considering the indoors areas while not spacious, work as a level while also having distinct sub-areas.

One last thing about Duke Burger level :
Considering we have a good reason to believe Duke owns the restaurant, it was quite bold of the developers to put in dark humor that Duke Burger puts dog meat into the burgers lmao. Good ol' 1990s.

3. Shop 'n Bag
Kind of a cluster fuck of a level due to the sheer chaotic-ness of the areas, a lot of enemies and those god damn annoying gun turrets in the ceiling made me spend a lot of time clearing out the first area. Basically turns into guerrilla warfare of some description while an obnoxious generic store tune plays in the store but it's kinda funny. If you're not careful with the ammo management you can run dry and a lot of enemies are quite resistant meaning you can't engage them all at once so hit and run tactics come into play here. I like how they made it feel like an actual big supermarket but the level has some issues in terms of obnoxioys gotcha moments. I did like the manager's office with the board saying a guy is getting fired because he was caught playing Duke Nukem on the job and the pc with Duke Nukem running on it.

4. Babe Land
I was excited for this one because of the name but only one of the rides was coomer material aka the swashbuckling babes in Babes of the Caribbean. Anyway, the idea was funny and the execution was alright. Though I died many times in the shooting gallery thinking initially that the way I was supposed to progress was via getting an Enforcer to shrink me and the go where the little ducks were also going.

DUMP Episode 1: Fuck Time Limits, a small community project organized by Terminus back in 2016 where it's a bunch of maps made by beginner mappers. Right now my favorite map so far is Kurashiki's where you slide down a big icy hill while avoiding rockets from the Cyberdemon seen in this spooky cave. The maps so far are pretty short but sweet. I never even knew Terminus made a megawad that consist of beginner maps and im surprised nobody has ever done more of these because it would be interesting to see creative maps done by people who trying to get a feel of mapping

Wanted something trashy to mindlessly beat on HMP so decided to download the first speedmapping megawad I could find on DW. It happened to be "3x3: Take Two". Turns out it's actually full of high quality maps and most of them are not really speedmaps as there is no limit on mapping time (the only limit is "3 flats, 3 wall textures and 3 enemy types per map"). And what's even more remarkable, is that it has a bunch of maps that feel very different from everything I played before:
"MAP10 - Maudlin of the Wall" you walk sideways of the giant Great Wall in the middle of outer space.
"MAP11 - Sludge Terminal" the most quake1 looking map I've seen so far.
"MAP13 - Nebula Swamp" picrel wins in aestethics department.
"MAP14 - Forkress of Doom" starts as a reference to "The Chasm", then offers a ridiculous blind guessing game, and in the end offers a decent arena skirmish somewhat in the style of hffm.
"MAP15 - myhouse.wad" has sector sauna, sector piano, sector toilet, sector pc, sector swimming pool, and even sector hot air baloon if you're not impressed yet.
"MAP20 - The Badlands" looks like half life helicopter meme level.
"MAP28 - Formula 666" is a fucking formula 1 rally level full of cyberdemons and spider masterminds.
"MAP31 - Tightrope" abstract aesthetics parkour platforming.
"MAP32 - The Faces of Evil" is a very subtle and satisfying take on slaughtermap gameplay, which I dislike in general, but here, surprisingly to myself, enjoyed a lot.

5. Pig Sty.
I enjoyed this level quite a lot. Lots of neat and soulful 1990s easter eggs like about Die Hard, Dirty Harry and the Unabomber. Some very grim humor too like the firing squad execution wall in the basement and the interrogation room.

This brings to mind why I really like Duke 3d and Build Engine level design a lot ; it's at that point in time where they actually had decent capacity to create real world environments unlike DOOM but it wasn't at that point where the level design was too constrained by realism like they have a burger joint and a supermarket with automated turrets in it lol. But they made a really good job of "selling" whatever environments they intended to portray while still retaining relatively fast-paced gameplay. The levels and the weapons still allow things like vents / elevation differences aka the vertical space really became a thing and this allowed the player to engage in fun guerrilla tactics against enemies.

Not sure if anyone reads these but I like to post them to basically get my own thoughts about them out anyway.

Doom Zero's map19 is such a spike in difficulty holy shit. That would be speedrunning, which is an optional pastime. Doom is a very speedrunnable game though, because:
>1, The core gameplay is solid and fast, it's straight up fun.
>2, The game times each level, and scores you for secrets, items, and kills.
>3, Doom could record your gameplay perfectly all the way back in 1993, by just recording your inputs, which gives you a perfect video, and also lets anyone examine the recording and see if there's any cheating or foul play
>4, There's thousands of different good fan levels if you want to speedrun more than the base game, and people still make more, you'll never run out of new levels to speedrun
There's a lot of different kinds of speedruns, besides reaching the exit as fast as possible, there's categories for getting to the exit as fast as possible while killing all the monsters, or without hurting any monsters at all, or only using your fists.

Level geometry is *very* simple, more so than original, but there are some good ideas and easy to play through without anything too obtuse. Can be beaten in a day.

A good candidate if someone wanted a set of levels to port to a console port like psxDooM or GBA or 32X.

There are design inconsistencies, like areas required for progress marked as secret, harmless toxic slime, harmful blue water, teleport pads that do not teleport etc.

Friendly reminder that you can disable the infighting change with the "Monsters don't give up pursuit of target" from "No" to "YES." (It's such a poorly named option that I still have to open up the game to test if it's yes or no.)

skill is your difficulty setting, if you don't want it on UV then change it, 0 is ITYTD and 4 is NM
if multiplayer enemy spawns are busting your balls, add +sv_nothingspawn 1 to disable them
hd_pof is power of friendship mode, which disallows respawning and instead requires all living allies to be in close proximity of a player's corpse to revive them
take that out if you want regular respawning gameplay, add a +fraglimit argument if you want limited lives
then make sure everyone playing has the same versions of all mods loaded as you, and make sure they follow your exact load order or you'll desync
it's fine to use cosmetic mods like reskins or sound packs, but anything that adds actual new stuff needs to be synced

joining players only need this, in addition to a synced load order:

you can save the game while playing and should do so at the end of each map, in case of level transition desyncs or party wipes

My thoughts on a few more Duke levels :

Going Postal was another kind of interesting level in that it doesn't really have anything to do with a ''plot'' of the game, it apparently was modeled after a real PO box building near the devs' office and the devs were like ''cool this will make a neat setting for a shooting gallery'' . The theme is also quite morbid considering the phrase ''going postal'' was coined after deadly mass shootings at workplaces in the U.S Postal Service were sadly a thing. So in essence it's a bit creepy vibes going on but it adds to Duke 3d's strange charm. Also shooting mail bags sends paper flying, it's a neat effect.

XXX-Stacy was a shot but quite sweet level, to me it was mostly notable for the extremely sexy latex clad dominatrix with short blonde hair. Va va voom! I love little cheeky bits like that, the sprite artist must have loved making that model!

Critical Mass was not really my fav level but not terrible either. Not too much to say about it, it was a nice nuke plant level but it's sort of funny how regardless of whether the plant is in alien control or not, Duke kind causes a massive environmental disaster by causing the meltdown kek.

Derelict was a mixed bag. I didn't really like at all how the way to actually get inside the ship was to jump at a texture that gave no indication that it was passable but once inside they did do a pretty good job of 'selling it' as a ship interior from crew quarters to captains cabins etc. Really large level too and I got lost a good few times in the lower floors but 'twas okay.

The Queen
I gotta say I have a big distaste for the ''alien world'' levels in Duke since a lot of things tend to be covered in slime / weird growth and doors and switches are colored sickly green that is hard to make out important things in and it looks bad.

The bossfight against the Queen itself was tough but not unpleasant. The alien queen at least looked really cool.

it's a slight amount of false modesty but he's also quite cocky.

i think part of the reason he says that is because he doesn't really hang out on doomworld, he doesn't do demo recording, he doesn't just grind hard maps, etc. he also hasn't grinded some of the "hardcore doom player" skills, like his bfg usage isn't ideal. he'll probably never compete for best times. he's just very orthogonal to the "hard core doom player" archetype.

that said i think he just has phenomenal raw skill. for instance, his situational awareness is insane; he often says "did you see..." or "did you hear..." during his streams for something i didn't notice at all, and he's keep tracking of 10x as many things at once and beating the map. what he can do on blind runs and first serious runs is absurd; the "hard core doom player" videos we know sometimes take > 1000 attempts!

I finally got into this game /vr/os and I have to say, this game has a lot of cool ideas but holy shit did they fuck it up. The companions are ass. I thought all of those meme vids were just jokes but holy shit is it actually worse. Oh yeah, forgot to add, switch hunting isn't that bad once you understand the designer's logic.
Basically in every map that's not the main one you have to:
a) advance the main map puzzle to get to the next hub
b) open up either one or more areas in the other maps
The last map you visit will be the one you only visit once, always, because if you went to all of the other maps, this one should be fully open. Then you loop back around in the same order until the main hub puzzle is done.

I mean in my opinion ''more content'' is a legitimate reason to play any .wad or Duke ep.

I really liked the main game of Duke Nukem 3d. I was worried that my memories of the game were better than the game itself but I found it a really satisfying and really charming game from the 1990s that scratches the itch for some cheeky non-pc humor coupled with visceral action and interesting map design where they were finally able to make convincing 'real world' locations but infuse that realism with wild and varied level choices and it somehow still working most of the time. There were some frustrating things and things that didn't work out so hot but overall I really did enjoy Duke.
In the easter eggs, secrets and stuff like that you could really tell this game's development has that magical ''soul'' that gets thrown around so much. Felt heartwarming to see the dev team photo at the end.

And now I'm looking to knock out the expansions. I came here to kick ass and chew bubblegum and I'm all out of gum!

Autoaim would only be ambiguous in the case that several monsters are stacked at exactly the same distance to the player, which is probably so rare that it could only be blamed on the mapper for putting them like that. Even then the target can be picked deterministically, say, the one closest to eye level. I don't know if the ports with finite height already do something like that but I'd guess they do.

You can make a vanilla-compatible dehacked patch that does it. It would probably be easier to use extended dehacked, though. I would tinker with it but I currently cannot use my right hand ATM. If you're interested I can tell you how to do it yourself, though.
1) Watch Doomkid's dehacked tutorial on youtube. Don't be intimidated, it's super easy to follow along because Doom's incredibly simple.
2) Download WhackEd, link should be in the video
3) Download the PWAD Antaresian Reliquary, as this wad also contains instant-switch weapons
4) Download Slade, the Doom editor
5) Open antareq.wad with Slade
6) Find the DEHACKED file inside the wad. Extract it somewhere. File extension should be .dex or .deh I think
7) Open that file with WhackEd. I think you also set Doom2 as the IWAD
8) Open another instance of WhackEd. Create a new extended dehacked file with Doom2 as the IWAD. This new file will contain the default values for everything.
9) Open WEAPONS in both instances. Click on one of the States and it will automatically open the STATES window and show you every weapon frame.
10) Compare the new frames to the default frames, specifically the raise/lower actions, and see what they did to make weapon switching so fast. Copy that into your new file. I don't think yo can copy/paste so you have to change the time durations by hand. Change the Filter to none if you need to create new frames

I haven't looked at it myself but if the changes are simply reducing the duration of frames then you can make it vanilla-compatible by choosing that instead of extended dehaked. I just chose that first in case you need to add extra frames with 0 duration to create the fast-weapon switch, which is what I vaguely remember seeing when I looked at antareq.wad's dehacked

Alright I just looked at it and it does appear the trick involves adding two extra frames per weapon, so you wanna just use extended dehacked since you can simply add more states, whereas vanilla involves taking states from other places since you can't add more. I would say that if it was more difficult with a campy horror vibe it could work.

For IF,its main issue with its atmosphere is that if feels too "safe".
Granted they have the references to classics etc. and a dumb joke involving soap that pissed off some people but it really lacks the attitude of the Build Trinity.
It felt held back like it didn't want to go in the same route,not even the campy over the top action of Duke or the gritty deadpan humor of Blood.

If it went for something similiar to Judge Dredd in terms of atomsphere it would've been so much better,we're talking about a cop after all.

IF is a beautiful game but It lacks soul. They could've done so much more with its cyberpunkish attitude.

Outside references and nice level design and beautiful texture work and voxel shit. I dont want to play it again.
There are some moments in there for sue like the police station shooting gallery mixed with enemies and end score.

Somebody correct me if I'm mistaken, but looking at weapons' states I just realised that shotgun actually deals a tiny bit more DPS than chaingun. A shotgun shot is 7 bullets, it takes 27 tics to fire if you hold down a button. It takes 4 tics for chaingun to fire a bullet, to fire 7 it'd take 28. So it takes CG a 1/35th of a second more to deal the same amount of damage as SG.

Uh, I just finished Nuclear Winter expansion for Duke 3d today.

The first two levels were just recycled L.A Meltdown levels with a snow theming, nothing too big to say about those.
Except the premise is kinda bonkers even for Duke, with feminist elves and aliens brainwashing Santa Claus. Okay, not gonna question it.

When you get to the actual winter / christmas themed levels it gets a tad better with the comfy log cabins and sets with presents and such everywhere.

Santa's Corporate HQ was a pretty nice level with wood furnished areas, meeting room and comfy room with a fireplace. I liked it, soulful.
Holiday Village was cozy.
The final level with the toy factory was a bit too short. Bonus for the Santa Claus bossfight with absolutely epic voice acting.

The enemy do-overs are kinda funny with the santa hats and red coats for alien troopers and pig cops, reindeer horns for the gatling lizards, actually new enemies in the form of those snowball chucking snowman cunts, and the feminist elves. The dual uzi elves are pieces of shit kinda, they are pretty small and you may not even notice them until they swarm you and delete your hp in a second. As an upside the elves and the shotgun variants drop often presents which spawn shotguns / chainguns / health / armor. They're cunts.
The fat commanders are less threatening than in the base game now that they have a freeze ray gun instead of their rocket launcher. They can still freeze Duke which will get you raped by other enemies but I'll take that over getting splash damaged to death.

It was a kind of a funny and endearing episode.

Shotgun is faster in certain situations, and arguably less wasteful ammo wise. If your map is stingy on bullets then you'd want to use the shotgun more.
Like it takes about 6 shells or so to kill a Caco, whereas the chaingun takes 40. You're wasting (without backpack) a fifth of your ammo to kill a Caco, compared to a little over a tenth of your ammo with the shotty.
