Definitely the best pick up and play gameplay you can get.

Going to reccomend Outzone. Covertly the best Overhead shooter of all time. Probably not that well known because the first stage alone will filter bad players and you cannot win by quarter feeding due to the checkpoint/power up system (not that you should ever quarter feed)

Most arcade games were aimed at an older audience while console games were largely made for children. A console game is a toy designed to give as many hours of passive entertainment as possible. An arcade game is a challenge set out before the player. You have to pay a coin just to possibly die in moments, it doesn't exist to placate you for long periods of time, it exists to force you to gain skill or pay a fortune. Time isn't the key feature, it's skill.

So it's completely natural that you should eventually gravitate to arcade games as you grow up.

Play Granada if you haven't. To me Granada has always been Asteroids on steroids and Asteroids is fucking awesome. Ohh and play Asteroids if you some how haven't.

That is a reason why I love a lot of 8bit games, OP. If you want to know the plot, just read the manual. I love arcade game because they are easy to play, difficult to master. If you love the game, you can always go for 1cc, high score and so on.

Yeah, arcade games are the best general combination of elements. This isn't to say that "the best games are arcade games", just that arcades typically were a better "formula" for games than consoles or PC ever were and had a much higher quality standard.

I find older games in general to be great for pickup and play. I remember playing cs 1.6 a lot in my preteens and early teens and it was a lot of fun, then I started playing WoW during high school and boy was that a waste of time in retrospect. I still play cs 1.6 sometimes, it's just so comfy to jump in one of the servers where I still recognize some players.
A classic old game: Re-Volt. I played it a lot in the last couple of days.

A classic arcade game: The King of Dragons. I used to play this with a friend several summers in a row at this arcade we visited when we went on holiday. Incredibly fun.

Beat em ups and fighting games are trash genres. Especially fighting games. Imagine how many great games in actually worthwhile genres we missed out on because every single developer was shitting out those low effort games in the 90's.

Although I missed the golden age at least I was able to experience it before it died out. Just walking into an arcade as a kid was a magical event I will never forget.
