Probably because the old model's cartoony style lends themselves better to what the TF2 art team was trying to do than the early 00s tactical new models do.

It was his first day on the job, probably HELLISH booksmarts required to be able to get in but literally the first thing he does at work shits the bed for the entire facility. As in, first real work related thing not overcooking Dr Kleiner's casserole in the microwave.

Anyway, played some more Duke 3d today. Bank Job was... odd to say the least, the vault being full of explodey alien cum jars and the massive dudes you hoard shrinker ammo for in case for. It was kind of a fun little level to showcase that they can make ''real world'' levels decently with Build Engine, at least way better than DOOM. Then played Flooded Passage, underwater levels, my favorite! [Not] . But it was passable even if it was very clusterfucky and I think at times it was straight hard enemy spam.
My favorite level out of episode 3 was the japanese bar / restaurant but those titties probably had something to do with it and also the level feeling a bit more reasonable in general.

not at a good framerate. the screen size choice was made to reduce cpu workload (for rendering). I copy the framebuffer to vram via dma, which is significantly quicker than the 68k can do rendering.

I do have some wall texture code (the resolution was around 64x64, but could be lowered because of the low screen resolution), but it's tricky to get right and I don't really feel like working on it at the moment, since it hurts performance (maybe 14-15fps avg). I'll probably go back to it at some point, but most likely not all walls will be textured.

well, the problem with texturing on an extremely slow cpu is that you ideally want only one (or less) instructions per pixel. repeating textures requires a modulo or bitwise-and operation, so more than one instruction. i could probably aim for 64 or 128 px high textures and that should be ok.

luckily, texture size doesn't really hurt performance (it hurts on gpus because they have caching and massive modern textures that take up lots of VRAM)

So I finished Duke Nukem 3d's 3rd episode and delved slightly into the 4th.

As a small recap on how I enjoyed the various episodes and which levels stood out :

Episode 1 is of course the 'iconic' Duke stuff, my favorite levels of that episode were Hollywood Holocaust and Red Light District, with Death Row in third. Especially the first two used real life areas as inspiration and had a lot of funny / cheeky very Duke-like things in it like strippers that flash tiddies, dirty mags/movies and areas like stores / movie theaters.
The latter parts of the first episode kinda feel... not playing to Duke's strong points like The Abyss is just terrible with cliffs looking like shit in Build. The enemy variety is also rather low so hope you like Octobrains and Pig Cops!

Episode 2 was pretty solid though I kinda enjoy Duke the best when there's like some cheeky real world stuff to 'relate to' and his corny shit humor. The weapon variety is better thanks to the various gimmick weapons you get and the enemy variety improves but the suicide robots are ultra stupid. The chaingunners and fat commanders are good additions to the enemy arsenal. The big guys with the grenade launchers and miniguns are used a bit too liberally maybe but decent ep.

3rd episode was classic good ol' Duke. Maps loosely based on 'real locations give it character and the enemy diversity is good here as well
Some levels are kind of confusingly designed but comes with the territory..

Played the first map of E4 and I got a good chuckle of the IMF being overrun and operated by lizardmen.

So I've been giving Hideous Destructor a go, I'm enjoying my time with it so far, it's complicated, but I'm getting a hang of it. Not him but Doom 2 is bullet spongier than Quake and that's a fact. The Rocket Launcher is only as powerful as the SSG, but in Quake it does twice the damage. Barons spawn much more frequently than Shamblers.
Here's another fact: Revenants take as long to kill with the SSG as Ogres. Sure, it's faster with the RL, but compared to Quake it's not nearly as versatile and plentiful in ammo for, and self-damage is much higher for Doom.

Kuchitsu's a good starting point. Short and sweet and you'll encounter the full enemy roster sans bosses. Diabolus Ex is another staple map, but it can put you in some awful situations so I recommend Kuchitsu first for getting your bearings. Marswar, TVR!, Scythe 1 (until map23), and D2TWID are good low-end megawads. Moving up from there, Chainworm Kommando is like Kuchitsu for big boys. Dimension of the Boomed (there's a compatibility patch on the HD site), Hatomo Battles the Yomi Demons, and Bury My Heart Knee Deep are good mid-tier maps. BTSX E1 and Plutonia are choice megawads at this point. You can also go and play some Doom 1 stuff after learning properly on Doom 2, if you so desire. You don't want to start there because while the maps are generally easier, the limited enemy roster will teach you bad habits that won't work in Doom 2. SIGIL and Ultimate Needs More Detail are good times.

By the time you've beaten all that, you ought to be good enough to play whatever you damn well please. But if you still want high-end recommendations, shoot for Antarctica Expedition, Valiant, and Armadosia. You can go back and finish off the last levels of Scythe if you stopped early before. You're free and independent now, you can go wherever you want. It's your turn to make the recommendations.
