I've hardly been to /vr/ (or 4chan) in about a year, and these threads were the last place I regularly visited. Came here during dead hours though. Glad that you're all still making OC and keeping the spirit alive. Kegan and the other modders are still doing their thing, seems like Tormenter is retiring. Had a quick browse through previous threads, noticed that people were openly talking about GoldSrc stuff, which means that one anti-valve crusader either changed interests or got sent to the loony bin.

Started playing Hexen 2 and its pretty nice. So far I've beaten Blackmarch/Famine on Adept difficult since its my first time playing this game and I've heard that Lord and other Nightmare difficulties in this game are too much. I prefer picking on more challenging difficulties, but I guess I shouldn't take that to extreme and be slightly more relaxed.
Besides that, I still have unfinished another playthrough of Hexen and bonus episodes of Heretic... Deathkings are waiting... Also have some Arcane Dimensions maps to beat. I've been pretty slow with playing games lately... or rather just in general, honestly. Trying to fix that and I definitely need to stir myself up.

I tried Beautiful Doom with 'Modern' weapons setting but it fucks up so many things
for example it makes the plasmagun not only heat up and require a rev down of the heat (which I can live with) but the dev also made it ridiculously inaccurate it fucking sprays even over a short distance
dont fucking ask me why the plasmagun was in the lore always meant to be a bulky but light weapon that is 100% accurate since it has little to no recoil

Why is Blood so fucking good? Finally decided to play it after owning it for years with nblood. Only played the first 2 episodes but its so perfect. I love OG Doom and considered it best fps ever made, but if Blood is this good til the end it might take the throne. The level design is perfect. You naturally figure where to go with no bs cryptic shit. The weapons are awesome and the enemy variety is great. The game looks awesome and everything is distinct. I find this highly debatable, I only played the build trio like in 2017 and I found them immensely enjoyable and fun to play.

The quake 2 era of half life and kingpin, sin was much more constricting and jank in contrast to them.

Duke3d was especially great to play. The fun design, weapons with the only minus being crap bosses and the big hitscan guys.

Live has a dwindling playerbase, but the community that's still there is alright. Servers these days are just Clan Arena and Freezetag, with occasional FFA. The skills you learn from it can transfer over well to most other Quakes. It's also just Q3A with some modifications, which is always a good time.

Champions is free, and you get access to all the gamemodes sans custom games (don't know about Ranked). Ranger's all you get, but that isn't a biggie because he's a solid pick anyway and other characters occasionally become F2P. Like any modern game, there's no mod support or server browser, but it's not like Live is getting new stuff anymore.
And If your PC isn't the latest, expect to do major graphics downgrades, or maybe not play it at all. It's very poorly optimized.

it seemed to work fine but meh too much effort so i deleted it
the problem is not just the enemy replacement DECORATE theres also the death animations and colored gore to strip out
too much work and I dont have enough knowledge or free time to learn this much
what I have is a slightly weapon rebalanced one
stricly limited to some DECORATE values edited

>increased AR magazine to 40
>increased plasmagun magazine to 60
also I did remove AR spread completely so its 100% accurate now
if you want I can share this but you are stuck with the Supercharge monster replacements
if you want a proper nomonsters version you gotta have to ask the dev it on Doomworld thread

I just installed Arcane Dimensions for the first time yesterday and have not been able to stop thinking about it. Holy shit, this is so fucking good. The combat is amazing, the level design and exploration is amazing, the audio and visual aesthetic is amazing. Is know this is a popular mod but why in the fuck is it not 4127x as popular? Supercharge does work with custom huds if loaded after the mod
the edited version I did of that visor hud that I found on BD ModDB page works and also I tested it with NCHud
Simple HUDaddons and PyWeaponWheel are also tested and work well alongside it

Started the Lunar Apocalypse episode of Duke 3d today, it starts off decent and the enemy chaingunner gives a nice boost to enemy variety.

Overall I think the build engine has allowed for Duke's environments to look more realistic when building city maps but the last map of episode 1 with the canyons looks kinda gnarly, natural environments definitely are not Build's strong suit.

Overall as a shooter Duke Nukem is kinda fun and I love his endearing stupid macho energy but I am left wanting more actual Duke like I think as such Duke's character and his cheesy McBain from The Simpsons-like attitude could be right at home in a game where Duke himself as a character was more present. Having identifiable villain, more kinda zany or satire-on-modern world charicatures and ultra violence with Brutal Doom-like kill animations would be absolute top tier.

I don't think that's the fault of Duke 3d itself for not doing it because technology was not as good at the time and a lot of Duke's character is probably projected upon him by fans but ya know.

If I got to design a Duke 3d game I think honestly contemplate on making it a third person shooter where :
Duke is taffing around in the desert, probably riding a motorbike and screwing biker chicks or whatever in small towns. Suddenly there's a big explosion in the horizon he loses consciousness. Anyway all kinds of jacked up shit starts happening, the commotion is actually aliens attacking the western seaboard of the united states [of course this is a duke game] . Then Duke is contacted by some dweeby conspiracy theorist friend of his that the nearby city [probably like a medium sized city or something] is going crazy or crazier than usual and all hell is breaking loose. Duke reaches the outskirts of the town but he is accosted by idiot biker rednecks who try to kill him. Then he reaches the town center that is full of joggers looting but a lot of the townsfolk feel like zombified and it is all strange.

Duke's friend tells him that there have been strange signals broadcasted in television and radio and things point to extraterrestrial messing around. He also tells that a lot of women have also been disappearing lately.

Duke orders his tinfoil hat friend to stay put in his bunker and give him backup via radio and thus Duke's friend will direct the player in broad strokes. Duke would head to the nearby radio / tv station to investigate the signals only to discover that it's actually run by lizardmen. After that Duke heads over to the police station but it's basically been corrupted by aliens and you find the familiar pig cops making their introduction and signs that a lot of the kidnapping victims have been transferred to either :
1 a meat processing plant right outside of town
2 the railyard in the city

The meat packing plant would basically be a human meat / body horror level where the aliens would turn those not deemed good enough to be turned into a cyborg or a sex slave into lunch .

The rail yard would give you clues that they are shipping people en masse to either the breeding program to create human/alien mutts , the worker drone / soldier program where they infuse them with machine parts and perform partial lobotomy to create almost mindless meatshields to use as a police force / reinforcements to their army.
These three programs would be 3 separate levels with kinda different themes and enemy types as Duke is trying to shut down the aliens' local conquering plans.

After that Duke learns about the aliens wanting somethimg out of Area 51 and with the help of some hippie Ufo nuts Duke will get inside the base which has most of it's soldiers mind controlled and modified by the aliens and the aliens are basically running the base so here they roll out the actually dangerous alien enemies.
Duke will battle his way to the base which is the final act of the campaign.

Decided to play some Deathmatch through QSS before going to sleep... and this shit was a lot of fun, actually. Seriously. There were a couple of bots, but also some people jumped it. Nobody talked and we just killied each other all the time.
Despite being a guy with highest ping and being on DarkPlaces server, I managed to have the most frags there and I would say map knowledge really is the key here: some stuff I remember, but it wasn't too hard to learn my surroundings. At first I wasn't that lucky since I joined midway on DM6, but next two rounds were in Tower of Despair and Introduction: I basically dominated them. Latter was actually more easier since nobody even tried to take that Quad Damage. Great first time of proper Quake multiplayer experience... or not really as that's a NewDM mod. Which is ironic since it asks to provide feedback on QuakeOne and some anon(s) talked about it being dead: it seems to be true since I can't find anything about this mod.
Anyway, I need some sleep.

I’m somewhat frustrated with this WAD. I appreciate the mapping, texture work, and the challenge is pretty solid. But I’m on map15 and the fatigue has set in.

The tech bases feel incredibly samey, and the maps are arguably too big. The big fights are really solid, but most everything else feels like padding.

I'm playing Quake 2 for the first time and.....I'm not finding it fun

I really can't put my finger on why. The guns all feel like trash to shoot and everything feels slow to fire/reload and just weak in general. The SSG feels like it's taking one more shot to kill things than it should.

When I started up Quake a few days ago, I disliked how dull and brown it was, and how the soundtrack was just ambient noise which I also didn't like in Doom 64 and I wished it was more like Doom. Now I'm playing Quake 2 and it's colourful and full of music like Doom and I just wish it was more like Quake.

Maybe I'll feel different when I finish it.

Started Plutonia Revisited. Kept ignoring it for a long time, because I read that it's just worse than Plutonia 2. Yet I've had more fun with it. Spriteguy here, >>7753594 pretty much got the gist of it. I import some references into blender, sculpt whatever new stuff I want added to a monster, give it some materials and a skeleton so I can move it around to match the monster's pose, and from that point it's just a matter of rendering the new stuff with a transparent background and pasting it onto the original sprites. After a last bit of manual touching up, you end up with some pretty acceptable looking new sprites!
The most time consuming part is to do that for every rotation, thankfully you can use this script https://github.com/chronicleroflegends/DirectionalSpriteBatchRender to help you out with that. It's basically like a virtual turntable for blender that will export your work from every angle at a low-resolution, really handy stuff.
As for your second question, there's probably a whole bunch of other people who used something similar for their mods through the years, since it's so easy and fast. Couldn't name any one of them though, except of course for our very own Revae, who did everything for Rekkr himself using Blender, and even made a short tutorial on how to do it like him a few years ago if I remember correctly.

Doom 64 was always supposed to be Doom, it was initially planned as a port of Doom 2 with some bonus levels, akin to the Playstation one, there's even some very early Doom 2 styled versions of some levels which ended up in the final game (like Altar Of Pain), one of the mappers shared a few of those on Doomworld.

Without exaggeration, hideous destructor is one of my favorite mods I have ever played for any game ever.
I love the juxtaposition of the simulator elements against the sci-fi setting, it just makes for such a satisfying mix of gameplay and immersion. It's crazy how such antiquated graphics can support such an immersive environment, I often find myself cursing and crying out in surprise, possibly more than any other game I have played throughout my whole life.

The virgin is supposed to be the normal way of doing things while 'chad' is the eccentric / aburd way but people turned it into thing I like vs thing I don't like which sucks and puts too much text on the pics.

That said, I prefer the mood, the atmosphere,SOUNDTRACK and the setting of half life 1 but HL2's got some things going for it, namely the physics and the gravity gun.

Gunplay is mostly the same though HL1's gunplay felt if not realistic but powerful for it's time while HL2 was getting really dated. That said the magnum, the crossbow and gravity gun were the weapons you should be using anyways.

I hated the mp7 and the combine rifle, they felt very weak.

That said both games are good although I mod the weapons and combine uniforms when I play HL2 though.

Tbh,it's been that way for a long time and several future variations got worse.

But that being said,I also feel HL 2 had a lot of great stuff,I like the setting but felt overdone. While the Black Mesa incident gives a sense of urgency and the fact you're free to do whatever you want with other workers gives a lot of freedom as well.
Bad HL 1 chapters were more bearable than HL 2 bad ones

I used a controller on the PC version when I played it for the first time in 2011 or so and to add onto this I couldn't beat the Icon of Sin in Doom 2 even when I had begun to use a KB+M so I had to use a controller to look up and fire rockets from the bottom.

I eventually did go back and beat it legit though last year.

Yeah, I'm fairly certain E3 was severely underdeveloped compared to E1 and E2 back when their betas came out. So I imagine E3 might have a few maps that are a lot more modern in quality than others in the same wad.

i played so much vanilla DooM in the mid-90s and it seems very barebones now. Build games have more immerse, more interactive, more entertaining worlds whereas DooM's were always more abstract.
Then there were all the extra touches, like kickable Zombie heads, or the Enforces that crap themselves and you step in their feces and leave bootprints and Duke comments 'SHEEEEIT'. And Lo Wang was like Master Roshi with machine guns.
That's why i'm so addicted to DooM mods, whereas Build, i just play the new map packs.

I remember back in the win XP days Doomsday/jDoom, Risen3D etc got me back into DooM, and i played with hi-res textures and .md2 monsters with visible damage and thought it looked fantastic.
There was no crouching, only jumping, you could look/aim 90 degrees up and down, it was like a prettier, more colorful Quake.
No slowdown even with hundreds of monsters.
But only vanilla maps and no gameplay mods.
Nowadays, i play GZDooM and Zandronum mostly. jDooM won't even launch for me for the last two PCs i had.

I'm playing through VALVE.WAD with Lt Typhon and HQPSXMUS.WAD, changing monster pack every episode. Those superfast rockets on skill 5 in final episode are teaching me new levels of despair. I'm loving it!
