Look, I love all of SMT, even the older ones, this isn't me being a zoomer. Persona 1 is bad, it's not fun to play, the story isn't interesting, nothing feels like progress, and by the time you noticed it, it ended. Persona 1 is just a big hole in my memory, because there was nothing to remember.

You're gonna hate it, Persona 1 is far closer to its SMT roots than the rest of the franchise, but unlike SMT it plays much faster (especially on the PSP version).

If you go into it expecting it to be like Persona 4 and 5 you won't enjoy it, it's much closer to the SNES SMT games than it is to the later Persona games. If you like the older SMT games though, I'd say go for it. Just make sure you play the PSP version since it has more streamlined gameplay, a non-butchered localization, and it actually includes the snow queen route. Also, definitely install the patch that brings back the PS1 version's soundtrack, it fits with the atmosphere of the game much, much better than the new soundtrack.

If you liked 4 and 5, 3 is pretty much just more of the same. It’s a step back in terms of gameplay and level design, but the story is fun and the characters are interesting. It’s also a bit shorter, which may appeal to you.
