It’s pretty well emulated anon and has been for a while. The only reason it doesn’t sound exactly the same is to better match just how many different implementations there were of the same sound font. You could load up the exact same sound font in anything from Windows 98 to 10 if you’d like and it sounds exactly the same. Provided your chipset supports that.

That's not how the Sound Canvas machines worked though. It's impossible to emulate perfectly, though it does come close.

Anyone who owned those soundcards can tell you that their emulation is dodgy at best, horse shit at worst. Even the OPL2 emulation has some instruments broken in certain games, Dune for example.

weren't sound canvas machines PCM playback based? shouldn't they be pretty easy to get close, as long as you can get hold of the samples? (or is that the problem)
there's emulating the resampling methods too, but they've emulated the emu-2 and old akai samplers methods in the music production world so it can't be that hard right?

Well some instruments which were GM and later, GS compliant could sound better than a Sound Canvas. But lots of instruments claimed it but the effects were different, they ignored some sysex messages, etc. I have an Alesis QS 6.1 which claims to be GM compatible if set into the proper mode and it sounds better than a Sound Canvas (individually sampled notes for many instruments rather than just one or a few samples along octaves, or one sample only) BUT the implementation isn't 100% compliant so it can get into a fucked up mode especially if some game starts sending all kinds of sysex.

Even in the Sound Canvas family you have several different DACs, sample sets at different bit depths and sample rates, etc. I have a Roland PMA-5 (2 actually) and while it's supposed to be GM compliant it has less than the required polyphony for some games.

Mt 32 was the neo geo of sound. Hardly anyone owned one and lots of people at the time didn’t even know what sound cards were (if they were even available). This is def audiophile territory imo. It was supported because “why not” by a few studios like Sierra and Origin.

The OP's image is an SC-88, not an MT-32. It's a more advanced version of the SC-55, which is what most PC games were composed with starting in 1991. You can buy one on Ebay for less than $200, and it's highly recommended if you want accurate sound in older games.

> OP's image is an SC-88, not an MT-32

Honest question, whats the difference? Not an audiophile and have no idea (and generally don't care) about audio tuning. Do own and occasionaly use Etymotic and Audio-Technica headphones only because they sounds nicer. Always setup MT-32 in DosBox games that support it for the same reason.
