The only tangentially retro one I've read is Higurashi, but as for non-retro it gotta be Maitetsu and Underalterbach

My absolute favorites of all time probably don't qualify as retro. The Sister Scheme series and this little known gem from 2011.

I never stopped being dumb EOP so I never read any VNs besides whatever fan translations were available ten years ago.

Wanko to Kurasou. Didn't think it was retro, but I checked, and it barely qualifies (unless Windows gets a different treatment for the 2007 cutoff)

Yu-No and >>7737132 if Higurashi counts as retro. I know, too fucking mainstream.

That's a detective adventure game like Phoenix Wright or the Kunio-kun games. There's an entire genre of the damn things in Japan, but they're so rare in the west that I don't think we even bothered to come up with a term for them. They're definitely distinct from visual novels (although people insist on calling Phoenix Wright a visual novel even though it absolutely isn't).

I wish more of them were translated to English. I keep looking around for VN's about tracking down violent serial killers, and the Famicom Detective Club 2 snes rom is as close to getting what I want out of the genre. I tried EVE Burst Error, and that was good until the ending did an asspull.

Are not them just called adventure games?
