The first two were very primitive games compared to everything Irem was making at the time, and to all its competitors. If you go back to it now it doesn't stand up the test of time.

they forgot how to make a game. art direction is awful, the music is not great and sounds too generic. Tactics did a lot to make the series feel alive but Final 2 reverses everything it has done.

Most of my experience of this series comes from the SNES games, but god damn the stage 1 theme of Super R-type is excellent. I also really enjoy the force system in the series, and the addition of the Hyper Mode in R-Type 3 is rad.
