One of the worst aging genres there are, and I say that as a racing game fan. 2D era isometric or fake 3D racing is worthless anyway, it didn't benefit from timeless sprites in any way, early 3D graphics have aged badly as well, most of the time old racing games have clunky or otherwise awkward controls with jumpy handling that lacks any weight or relation to real world ideas of inertia (even arcade racing can't live entirely without comprehensible vehicle behavior), old imitations of real engine sounds are absolutely terrible. It's just very difficult to find pre-2000 racing that's still enjoyable, at least in my opinion.

One of my favourite games ever and I'm not even that big a fan of racing games. Been playing Burnout Revenge recently. Didn't care for the 360 version, but the technically inferior original Xbox version clicked with me. Yes, and in the second one (or first one in the west) you can already see a few features that would return in Gran Turismo. The race map display, HUD fonts, replay cameras, generally it seems built on the same engine. You can already feel the roots of Gran Turismo there and I believe I've heard "the Polyphony guy" say he already had the idea of a driving simulator in its head and used Motor Toon to establish himself and as a technical proof of concept for further developments.

The final unlock in the game - formula X - is basically a GT tech demo. It is just using a stock car for a TT on a few tracks with a wildly more sim like physics mode than the rest of the game uses. If you play that and then go to GT1 you can clearly feel the connection. l

I recently tried PS2 and Gamecube versions of some NFS games and is it just me or does the handling on those feel right? On PC it was smooth but here I lost control multiple times and the drifting felt way harder.

yes yes I know, buzzword and shit, but i see soul as something with a personal touch, a piece of art that's not a commodity first, but something that a person(or a small group of people with deep understanding of each other)imprinted on their creation, made something that is unmistakably theirs. like, nobody but psygnosis and TDR could've made wipeout as they did. you feel me?

Yeah. Imagine making a game about demolition derby and making all the cars shitboxes that accelerate and turn at the speed of molasses. Imagine every track just being different variations of the same shitty dirt track, an insomnia-curing oval, or a figure-8 with maybe, MAYBE if you're a good boy, a loop-de-loop. It's incredible how they managed to make the game so unexciting, but then again it was already dead when they changed the physics model.

Oh, and the realism shit? They made it so hitting things and taking damage could break different components of the car, so if you ever wished for a demolition derby game where your car that's already slow to play even slower, now you can break your gearbox or radiator and overheat the engine, making you only able to T-bone your opponents at a brisk-speed 2 mph in the arena, for 30 minutes straight. Because that's fun in a game of this sort, right? Like spraining your ankle in a Tony Hawk game and having to play the remainder of the level without doing any tricks.

You mean a ame so rough you will actually phase through other racers a good chunk of the time? A game with physics so floaty the cars are made of cigar smoke? A game where actually focusing on causing damage will generally mean you lose as you NEED to get first or second to get the multiplier?

Not that Anon, but most of the time the field has been so obliterated you get the multiplier by default.

I ALWAYS failed in Demolition Racer if I just tried to race normally. I would never get enough points to make the multiplier worthwhile.

How is it floaty? Because the cars go flying when they jump off a ramp at 200mph? Or because they get tossed into the air when you hit them at 200mph? Because that's called FUN physics.
>A game where actually focusing on causing damage will generally mean you lose
Race mode actually gives you more points for damaging opponents than getting first. If you just race to get 1st, you'll end up 7th in the scoreboard for being a pussy and not wrecking shit up. You can easily get 1st place in the final scoreboard if you cause as much damage as possible and end up as 2nd or 4th in the race. You're supposed to kill shit until you're a 10% health first, then try to finish in a good place.
