It's certainly technically impressive but it maxes out my i56600k on the outdoor levels without turning down the rendering. Like I said, the levels are cool but they're so fucking big that if you're someone who compulsively explores every nook and cranny like me it's exhausting. The weapon variety isn't too impressive for a ww2 game, there seem to be a lot of omissions of classics you'd expect. the enemies aren't super varied either and there's a lot of "hitscan" (they seem to shoot projectiles, just really fast ones) but that kinda comes with the territory. There is some retarded bullshit occasionally, like a lot of times they're stick a guy with a sniper rifle at the end of a long hallway just to get a cheap shot at you when in "real life" you would never have a sniper guard a fucking hallway and they snipers are probably one of the more dangerous regular enemies like they are in RTCW. In fact, RTCW is what it feels a lot like in general.

Episode 1 is mostly excellent, episode 2 is alright, and episode 3 and 4 have a bunch of clunkers. Its a mixed bag.

If we're talking consistency, Powerslave (DOS) has BY FAR the best level design of any retro FPS. Every level except the very last one feels great to explore.

I actually really life how each slot has its set of weapons and with more backpack you can increase the amount of weapons you can carry.
But it removed the fact each weapon didn't share ammo with the others.
For example each shotgun for slot 3 have their own amount of ammo.

I don't really like making secrets, because they mess up the difficulty I had in mind and I'm not very creative and I don't like looking for secret because there's nothing that definitively can't be a secret. Any wall can be fake, or openable, or destructible and there's no way to eliminate the possibility that you just need to molest every wall.
I usually add one secret for stats and sometimes I add secret invulnerability before a fight that I feel would be controversial thinking "You know what, if you don't like this fight as I made it, just skip it with this secret invulnerability". Sometimes I do get inspired and make something nice and secret. My HD setup is closer to stock than most so I often forget how much the addons run the range. What I like to do is take note of "false positive" secrets in other maps, and use the ideas from that to make secrets. Not just it. Every standalone mod on GZDoom engine (and most other projects which derive from old engines) have this problem, and it makes me so fucking angry I want to break something.

If it looks like Doom 2, plays like Doom 2, and feels like Doom 2, it sure as hell should be able to run on hardware contemporary to Doom 2. Precisely. And that is entirely because modmakers can't contain themselves. Cool modern features are cool, but sometimes you gotta stop and think if you are trying to mod your bicycle, or trying to build a motorcycle using flimsy frame.
It's just so fucking aggravating when I can play Serious Sam HD, on at least medium settings, and it looks gorgeous and doesn't stutter even during fights, but they I launch this BoA, or that horror mod, and they are just unplayable. I don't know why - is it fault of those who created those mods, or of GZDoom in general? On one hand, it ought to be problem or specific modmakers, but then again, they are not dumb, they can whip out something on their own, right? Not to mention that if they choose this engine, then, probably, they are not alien to gaming on non-state-of-art PCs? Am I wrong about that?
And it's not limited just to mods! There are tons of games that really don't look all too great, but they demand atrociously strong PCs. And there's never any place for discussion, because when you say that this or that is lagging, it's always yours problem, "buy new PC lmao". No one stops to think even for a minute, and for them, it's perfectly plausible that games that look worse (at least technologically) than those from 2008 demand Ryzens and those new R cards, or RTXs, or whatever else.

Though I understand and share your frustration with GzDoom's less than great optimization and performance (which is poor), I disagree. A huge part of Doom's charm is how moddable it is, and people just doing all kinds of shit with it, that includes really advanced and demanding things.

Now, some things are demanding which in some circumstances shouldn't be, but a lot of these problems hinges on what GzDoom is, and its history. Long story short is that it's difficult to put in an all new foundation under a multi story house.

Well, I'm about at my wit's end with the Quoth/Drake stuff. There is so much that is re-defined or reorganized from vanilla that I just can't make heads or tails of it. I don't want to just copy/paste over half of their QC, but I also don't understand the code well enough to translate it to a more vanilla-like format.

Well the only things I can really do to actively remind people of that in game is have his snout poke out slightly from the bottom of the screen with the fullscreen HUD, his hands, and he'll be slightly shorter than Blaz.
I might have to actually increase Blaz's height so Samson can be shorter but still playable in maps. Poor Blaz at one point was too short and some maps were left unbeatable for it.

The point in the thread that it was ''Bart Simpson''-tier was spot on but not in a bad way. Basically Duke is corny as fuck but played mostly straight and that's where a lot of his charm comes from.

However I feel like Duke Nukem as a game suffers from the freshness of the whole thing wearing off after the first few or so levels because the game doesn't really do pacing well and fps games of that time hadn't really worked out storytelling so while kicking aliens in the nards works from a gameplay perspective, as an experience Duke becomes kinda bland when the initial novelty wears off and there isn't a steady rollout of new enemy types etc.

If there ever was a Duke revival a lot could be done with doing smaller episodes with plot advancing cutscenes / comics with over the top cornyness / violence and maybe even other human characters interacting with Duke or a ''nemesis'' for him.

More enemy types, more gags, gorey / visceral special moves to execute enemies with.

Kind of how DOOM is characterized by the now-infamous DOOM comic that the original game didn't properly live up to but now does thanks to Brutal Doom and the nu-DOOMs.

Given the Saturn's less than perfect abilities in rendering 3D, I'm not buying that these guys had some magical super engine which gave Doom that claimed performance, not when you actually take this port apart and look at how fucking sloppy it is, and not when you compare it to the results Lobotomy Software got with first person shooters on the Saturn.

Lobotomy Software were a bunch of warlocks who ported Duke Nukem 3D to the PSX and Saturn, Quake to the Saturn, and made Powerslave/Exhumed for PC, PSX, and Saturn, and they generally got quite decent performance out of these games most of the time with their own Slavedriver engine, but they certainly never were anywhere close to 60fps. The under-achievers who put together Saturn Doom certainly weren't outpacing THESE dudes, I'm convinced of that.

Lobotomy Software did make a port of Quake for the Playstation, running on their Slavedriver engine. For completely inexplicable reasons though, nobody they pitched it to wanted to publish it, so it just stayed on the shelf, and people with Playstations missed out on a fun game.

I did Freddie and was able to stop all compiler warnings and add some progs_dump stuff. He probably doesnt work completely properly in-game (dont have time to test), but its a start.

I moved new definitions to defs_ad.qc from subs.qc because thats a very unintuitive place to put them. Its supposed to be for subroutines (generic functions called by other functions).

Btw, you should investigate any yellow warnings about too many or too few parameters on function calls. Because the former means the function caller is expecting more information to be processed, and the latter means the function doesn't have data it needs and will use random garbage data instead.

Looking at some Duke 3D footage for the Saturn (I never owned one) it's kinda neat. since everything is rendered with polygonal tiles they through in some vertex baked sorta AO looking effect. They lost some things like swinging doors it looks like. It seems to run at around 25 fps at worst so far? Estimating. Doesn't look bad. I would bet a Doom port with similar care could get to 45 fps, or so. Considering it's a simpler game overall.
You'd still get the texture warping, and I can see how that would bother someone like Carmack.

A neat step in the evolution of Team Fortress, but I can't help but feel it's just a tad too clunky. QWTF seems barren and ancient in comparison but plays fast as heck (or it has since people started bunny hopping, given the mod predates that becoming common); TFC tries to be QWTF with new paint and is fun on its own, but still has way too much menu-driven intricacies and kludges like using aliases in a config file for default keybinds instead of just making the bind a command in itself (e.g. scout scanning) and doesn't really fix any of the balance issues (Medic is still a better flagrunner and combatant than Scout, Pyro is crap, etc). ok after fiddling with some monster mods posted here I decided to do a proper version of MeatGrinder Monster Only
it came out pretty good I think
and I changed it so that Chaingunners drop 'Chaingun' which if you are playing with Assault Rifle replacer on in Supercharge makes them drop an Assault Rifle accordingly
another good thing about MeatGrinder is that the corpses arent shootable so it SHOULDNT break map triggers
its also much much lighter on perfomance compared to normal BrutalDoom gore and stuff
Im pretty satisfied with the result
also another good thing MeatGrinder does is make all enemy bullet weapons non hitscan
projectiles are very fast but you can manage to dodge a few of them when moving fast

Its unbelievable it honestly makes the OGs look quaint.

It uses some unused HL stuff, has great scripted scenes, some amazing ones with the grunts and other spoilers.

I love when you pick an old engine and with modern power explode its complexity . Kinda like Ion Fury and Thief fan made missions. Keeping vanilla most of the time but no afraid of making more complex maps.

Be sure to find all the story easter eggs, they are hard to find.

That's probably the Vertical Sync, go into the options and turn it off, it fucks with you by giving you input lag, and makes the game really hard in a way it shouldn't be.

I think that the port is decent, but it does need some improvements:

>being able to record your own demos
>the option to use something like the Sprite Fix project, or an imitation of it, just for better sprite offsets and fixing some of the stray pixels, as well as fixing the timing on the muzzleflash for the super shotgun

It was an extremely bad port on launch, but they fixed it up pretty well. Could be better, of course, but it seems they're still updating it.

It's not going to outright replace manually labored graphics, but it's a decent way to improve how something things look like at a glace.
For Doom and other sprite-based shooters it's going to be as tacky as other "HD" texture packs. But for older 3D games (I'd say at least PS2/Xbox/NGC era), this will likely end up being an okay solution to viewing some murky, compressed textures (especially 2D skyboxes like in 3D Sonic games for example).

Maybe it was an oversight by Valve but again they have a melee attack and can use a camouflage in Hard Mode,which is a nice detail.

The (good) Build games feel a bit more focused, less of a platform for mods. Like if you were to replace the weapons, you'd have to replace the character too, and then the setting makes no sense for the new character. It's all a lot more closely related compared to Doom's more blank slate approach. Any shmuck can pick up some guns and kill demons. You can't just replace Caleb so easily, even ignoring the obvious issue of voice lines, his journey is a lot more personal than Doomguy's.

That said, that's all just about theming and consistency. In terms of gameplay alone, I think Doom 2 has a massive advantage in its enemy roster and toolset. Even Powerslave, the most tightly designed among Build games, is held back by its underperformant flamethrower and a few enemies that aren't especially fun to fight. Doom 2's enemies have brilliant dynamics and the worst you can say about the weapons is that the pistol gets obsoleted by the chaingun, which is much less of an issue than finding a new weapon that isn't useful any time you have ammo to use anything else.
