/CRT/ general
previous thread >>7640378

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

The person wants it gone because it's useless to him, and you shouldn't be paying anything more than $20 for it.

better off to just take the thing, the person working there wont care or at least say you are using it for parts only. I once sold some really cheap computers for $20, the dumb boomers expected it to be brand new and would complain that they didn't know how to use office and wanted all this other free stuff.
A good way would be while throwing something away, sneakily take the thing you want and pretend it was always yours.
I don't agree with it but its why people don't like selling stuff.
Another thing would be someone buys a thing just to rip out the speakers or something and then they just dump the rest of it outside on the ground, then you get the blame for it.

also, if you did have an odd display that supported component over scart, you'd only have to change the PS2 setting, it sees scart and component cables as the same and just has a setting whether to output RGB or YPbPr.

depends, if your pc is old enough to have svideo output, or can do 15khz through vga, you just need to buy a cheap adapter and it will work mostly fine

These are good but that specific range, a lot have a geometry problem after about 10 years in the top right hand corner is out of focus and sloped downwards, I've owned the 16", 24" and that 28" version its a common fault. You just need to get a magnet in the top right and epoxy it onto the back of the tube if it has the problem. I'd keep in mind one thing that looks like an old chap on the seat taking a picture, combined with the decor and that there's a freeview box on top of the tv, this tells me he's been using it as his main tv for the last 22 or so years, good model though.

I use a vga to scart cable through the DVI port on a Radeon HD 7800 ans into a Scart to Component Transcoder but the cable needs to be made for that purpose, not any old one will do and the guy I bought it from is no longer selling them afaik so you have to know how to make one yourself to do that method these days I guess. When I got home it turns out the power switch only works when pressed (same issue as the CM8833) so I held it in place with a straw and it worked fine for a few hours but then started making a snapping noise (sounded like arcing) and the image on the screen went away and came back while the arc happened

wasn't a continuous thing and was more sporadic, there was no smell like something was burning

Anybody got any ideas on what might be wrong?

It has a 12V input I could try as well as the 240v

I can solder and do have some experience in electronics repair but have never done a CRT before

I really wanted to keep this for my mega drive and I love the 80s look

Model number is 10CX 1120/05R and I have found an English service manual pdf online

Any help is appreciated

I think the switch is a little more complicated than that

Not sure if having the switch held down when I switch the set on at the mains is the cause of the arcing sound but I'd guess it is more serious

I actually really like the roadstar brand for a little telly, I've owned most of their models and I can tell you don't bother because the ctv 1020 has a funny quirk, its the only tv I've ever seen in my life wired to only accept rgb at 50hz, so if you want 60hz out of it, it's composite only, though let's be fair composite on 10" is fine, I used to use it to watch minder in my bed.
>>7697189
If you want a sub 14" tv roadstar is one of the brands in the uk that did it for caravans and such, they can run off leisure batteries, all of them being rebranded models known elsewhere like toshiba 10" vhs combi units but with scart added. They have one model in particular which was really good for it's day in like 2002-ish, dvd combi with a really fine pitch samsung tube in it.

Np just usually ignore the larger units roadstar made, they came at the end of their life as a tv rebadger where they just rebadged any old crap like an alba 20". The small stuff they made used to actually cost quite a lot, any tv that ran off 12V did as it was a niche use like a caravan, the 10" trinitrons used to cost as much as their 20" versions.

Online markets aren't the be all end all people some people think. They are often a haven of scalpers who try to corner small markets. I tried to find a proprietary apple PSU once and I could not find a listing for less than 100$ over quite a bit of time on eBay and such, went to some random fleamarket and got one for like 5$ and learned they aren't the least bit uncommon and you can find them all the time in thriftstores.

A somewhat close CL has one of those top line MItsubishi 35 inch consoles I remember someone on here had as their dream TV a few months back, but sadly says it stopped working after being put in storage (doesn't turn on). But it's free, and the original owner still has the manual and they paid over $3k for it way back then.

Has to be one of the nicer console cabinet televisions, and among the largest:

So this question isn't video game related but hopefully you'll allow it. I have a CRT setup with several video game consoles. Occasionally I get the urge to also play 4:3 video content on the TV, like from a computer or maybe roku. Typically older anime & tokusatsu shows that just feel more at home on a CRT. Also at the complete opposite end of the spectrum there is the recent Synder cut of Justice League that is in 4:3, I mean you're kinda doing yourself a disservice by dropping down to the resolution of a CRT, but still it would be kinda neat. What kinda equipment would you need? I've already done a little research on this, perhaps a HDMI to VGA dongle like the HDFury to something an Extron VCS 500 or 700. That configuration would be kinda pricey but seems like it may yield the best quality, or maybe there is a simpler solution.

Why does the whole 'using a PC for 240p CRT gaming' thing has to be so goddamn hard or limiting for people who want to play more than just retro games on TV?

i want to have a 2 screen setup (2 29'' inch screens, one CRT and one LCD), but i simply cannot have component/240p output in the CRT unless i buy an oldschool radeon card, which wont let me run newer games or arcade dumps like Project Diva and/or buy a ridiculously expensive/hard to find HDMI2Component transcoder thingy and probably make a 750$ PC rig to be able to use an Nvidia and a Radeon card because the power source of the office PC simply is not gonna let me do it. i can do 2 screens, but i can only connect the CRT thru RCA cable. i cant even use S-Video!

2 suggestions:
There have been successes where people use a cheap hdmi-vga and successfully output 240p through that. This removes the need for an old video card. Alternatively, you could buy a relatively recent card (up to geforce 970) for native vga output which is also easy to get 240p from.

Another, easier choice is a raspberry pi

tbf, it is not that i havent thought about those alternatives, tho those come with their own bullshit too...

about #1? guess that would be the best choice, in fact i have a vga monitor and a HDMI2VGA converter and the tests i had so far are pretty decent. tho my problem there is the size, the biggest i can get is 17'' from all the used stuff listings i have seen (i have a 15'') and well, it is a bit frustrating when the original plan was to use a screen double the size than that.

Also, i had a lot of troubles setting up the custom resolutions and dynamic CRT switchres, or is the monitor that doesnt support the resolutions be it from the nvidia setup or CRU, or is the card.

and the option #2? funny enough, thats the reason i started my research, My brother bought a whole Raspi set for 240p, including the RGB-Pi adapter and a Retrotink SCART2Component adapter since the RGB-Pi is SCART only. and it even works on my CRT, so yeah, that could be an option. but i already invested around $6000+ pesos in the PC, so spending around 8000-10000 into a raspi 4, the RGB-Pi and the Retrotink? not a nice prospect there.

well the seller is jacking around with the shipping now so it's probably gonna fall through. I have literal stacks of NES, genesis, playstation, etc consoles in my attic from just thrifting and ebay over the last few decades, but I do understand the white whale mentality. I should just mod them all and dump them if people want really custom shit. What mods did the sega stuff have?

i've been doing CRT related repairs for about 8 years now so I'm trying to find broken ones that might be fixable. There's "my old guest room tv power button doesn't work" brokn and "broadcast hardware beaten to shit broken". At this point, I should just give up and get some of the flat screen scaler solutions. pc8801, 6001, 8001, X1, Sharp MZ(?) is 15khz digital
pc 8801 might have some 24khz software
X1 Z Turbo is 15hz analog or digital
MSX et. al.is 15khz analog with a few having 15hz digital.
FM Towns is 15, 24, 31.
I don't have monitors that can do all 3. Some japanese NEC and Sony "pc tv" type monitors can do literally everything but you're looking at $400 + Domestic shipping + International shipping + VAT

It's pretty much the CVBS, EGA, CGA, RGBI, RGBS, VGA fiasco except there's hardware that can do multiple standards.

The Saturn came with Pseudo Saturn already on it so it could play burnt discs. The Dreamcast was a full GDEMU/ODE mod. Worth it for me since I didn't want to deal with disc swapping (you don't need to do this anymore) or soldering.

With analog signals cable length and QUALITY matters!
With the shorter the cable the more vibrant colors/contrast depth/brightness and less noise you will get, this gets even more true with the higher quality of cable you use.
A high quality RF will look about the same as composite RCA, a high quality composite cable will look close to s-video in color and brightness while still retaining some of it's coveted artifacts.

I have an RGB cable that's the thickness of a garden hose. Each of the R,G,B,H, and V channels are carried on a full size coax cable so an incredible amount of shielding and bandwidth, low signal loss.

20 feet of this stuff, Belden 7712a, from Blue Jeans cable terminated with BNC is around $300.

I got a great deal when my one showed up as new stock leftover from an installation on eBay and only paid $40 (mines more than 20ft as well, probably cost more toward $500 range).

For long runs, this is the cable. It's so heavy you do not let it hang off anything or it would probably pull off the connector, and it doesn't make tight turns.

Got my first pvm the other day cause I wanted something small to sit on my desk and honestly, rgb really doesnt look that much better than s-video. I'm probably not going to get the rgb cables for the rest of my consoles, I only got one for my genesis cause that one seems to actually benefit since the model 1 only has rf and composite. I've been playing on a consumer sony for like 2 decades with s video and I really just don't see what the big deal with rgb is so far. The best thing about the pvms is the video out passthrough, it makes it so easy to capture video for a capture card and it doesnt degrade the signal either, before I had to use these multi out s-video/composite boosters and they introduce noise which sucks.

tldr the best thing about the pvm so far is the form factor and video outs for each input

Any advice on finding a PVM-20L5? I've probably spent two hours searching online for one each day since start of April. It's an unhealthy obsession that wont be sated.
Some have been posted on eBay, but they were damaged.
I've seen two through Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist, but both of them had some awful geometry. Also, they were in California, and I'm in Western Australia.
I've tried BroadcastStore, but they've been absolutely useless and are possibly running a scam.
I'm not worried about cost, I just need to find one that is in good condition, works properly, and is being sold by someone who would crate and ship it internationally.
Hell, got one to sell? I'll buy it for $2500 - $2800 USD.

It's definitely worth it and you can boot into 15khz. It's cool to be able to play games with higher internal res in 480i for 3d shit and then run ahead makes most 2d consoles better than any emulation method aside from mister. 480i can be a bit harsh if you use the newest version since there's no flicker filter, but you can download an older version that has it.

Can anyone approximate how the following compare in display quality:
- console 240p composite output to CRT TV
- console 240p RGB output to CRT TV
- emulated 240p output to 1600x1200 CRT monitor
- emulated 240p with 5x integer scaling and 1200p output to 1600x1200 CRT monitor
?

People always say that CRTs have no native resolution and will smoothly scale anything, but surely the ultimate clarity of the image will hugely depend on the dot pitch of the display and 240p on a CRT monitor will look nothing like 240p on a CRT TV.

it won't if you just stretch the games to 1600x1200 like a jackass, but if you use a superwide modeline and tvout/tvout+interlacing it would be really hard to tell the difference unless you're an hyper autist, more so if your monitor has aperture grille instead of shadowmask

It's a dial inside the circuitry of the monitor. As the tv ages, it can't operate as efficiently as it used to, however you can boost the voltage a bit with this potentiometer so that the tv runs on overdrive to regain it's image quality. This can wear out your tube quicker, however. This is a loose explanation. Since you're a beginner, I would recommend learning how to adjust just the basic brightness/contrast/sharpness settings first. I used this website https://www.eizo.com/library/basics/eizo-monitor-test/ and it works well. Do this first and then see if you're happy with it.

What does the actual development process have to do with how the game was intended to be seen by the end user? That kind of retard logic is what makes people play SNES games in 8:7.

Big problem with Trinitrons is that all the ones that come with component are flat screen. There are like two curved component Trinitrons so you pretty much can't find them. You can find flat screens with good geometry but it's less than ideal. They also weigh a lot more because the glass has to be thicker.

Having played emulators on a 1280 x 1024 VGA CRT, I can say it does look very nice. You may still want some light filtering but not much. The difference between composite and RGB from original consoles to CRT TV is an afterthought compared to getting a good TV. I recently picked up a Panasonic Tau that makes everything you throw at it look mindblowing. If you can find a CRT of comparable quality in good condition, then you can see for yourself if you need or want to upgrade cables.

Everything is a bitch to get parts/service for in 2021. Anything made to be repaired instead of replaced is old enough that anyone who knows how to fix it is either retired or dead. Everything else is all digital and can't be repaired. This goes for TVs, washing machines, fridges, etc.
