Is there any way to emulate this stuff that isn't difficult? I just downloaded neko project and it's just weird. >> No.7691296

>>7691270
That depends on the format.
Floppy images are .fdi, .d88, .img, .nfd, .hdm
Hard disk images are .hdi or .hdd. You can also guess from the file size since FDD are around 1MB while HDD are significantly larger.
You insert Disk 1/A into Drive 1 and Disk 2/B into Drive B, then reset.
Games on hard disk images are typically configured to boot right into the game via AUTOEXEC.BAT. Otherwise you use it like other MS-DOS systems.

>> No.7691443

>>7691427
The games on the archive are all untranslated. Most of the fan translations are either prepatched or just have a tool that'll patch it automatically for you. Getting the emulators to work can take a bit of getting used to, but usually boils down to just mounting a disk image and letting it autorun. There's not a lot of translated games for the system, the most notable are probably the Touhou games and Rusty.

>>7691445
Sorry, I'm honestly not too familiar with translated H-games outside of a few visual novels. YU-NO is really good, but the translation patch is for the windows version so I'm not sure if that counts. There's also a few h-games that are translated and playable on a web browser at tss.asenheim.org but again you're not really playing it on emulator hardware. A lot of pc98 games just end up translated on different platforms. That's the best I can do, hopefully someone else can come in with some better recommendations.

The first two are limited tactical RPGs strapped to visual novels. so you can fumble through what attacks are best or do what with some trial and error.

The third game reworks the non RPG parts as more of a dating-sim esque thing, so if you're in it for the porn you gotta know the right spot at the right time to trigger the events that get you the poon.

Why do VN developers find it necessary to make the player click on every dialog option in triplicate before the plot advances? Half of the time they don't even give you a clear indication of where you need to be to advance the story, so you just roam from location to location clicking on every option. Why do they do this?

Sure, but Leaf Visual Novel Series was a brand name at the time. The Anglosphere adoption of that brand name as a genre got started after that, and even now the way it tends to be used (as a synonym for eroge and for things that aren't even novels, like Tokimeki Memorial) doesn't really line up with Japanese usage of ADV or sound novel or NVL. (Though the reverse importation of "visual novel" back into the Japanese language as a genre name in the past few years may end up unifying things.)

So when an English speaker asks "why do VN developers do X" the answer is "because they didn't think of themselves as VN developers."

The newer one has 2 pics, but the old one has 4 pics.
Some uploaders intentionally omitted loli pics because they want to earn more GP.
One loli/shota pic, BAM the panda eats the gallery.
Funny thing is, I found a doujin uploaded recently and the translator intentionally blurred 1 panel because there's a loli in that panel.
Of course the mods told him not to do that.
But in imagesets, there's NO COMPLETE gallery so they don't break the rule if their imagesets are not complete.
Although I'm not sure if the rule applies to game cg galleries.

Yep. I understand why one would leave some pics out now. Anyway, Star Platinum is genuinely fun if you like card games and once you know how to play, you're one step away from playing any Hanafuda game. Same rules, different card set and the zodiac set is more intuitive for a novice. Cute and catchy OST too.

Now as for eroge I'd recommend:
RPG (if you can read a bit of Japanese) : Branmarker 2 (the first one is meh), Filsnown and Rouge no Densetsu
Puzzle : Marines, Carat and Marble Cooking
Mahjong (if you don't know how to play, look for the CGs as they look great) : Animahjong V3 /X Perfect, Hotei Raoyui, Ten Sen Nyan Nyan

I played one hanafuda eroge in early 2000 called Way.
NSFW https://www.dlsite.com/maniax/work/=/product_id/RJ007741.html
I think I played the Japanese one with English patch made by fans.
There's an official English patch too but I don't remember if I ever play it.
I don't understand hanafuda rule, do you know some hanafuda games that provide tutorial mode?

I can read a bit Japanese and played lots of have eroge since mid 90s.
I learned mahjong from an old game called Hongkong Mahjong pro.
Of course it's Hongkong (Chinese) rules, but the basics are the same.
I love Mahjong fantasia series and played all 3 of them (Chinese translation).
I recently get the windows remakes, but I haven't tried them.
Same with Lakers series, got the windows version too but haven't tried it.
Someone shared Lakers' windows version in /vr/ a few years ago.

That's a blast from the past. I also played it with an Engrish translation years ago and it had an eerie atmosphere. Quite a unique artstyle too.

As for learning the game, Star Platinum is as friendly as it gets. Card suits are easy to identify and the plays you can do are highlighted. Here's a faq that goes into more details :
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/pc/589348-star-platinum/faqs/23732
Now for classic Koi-koi :
http://mahjonginmame.com/hanafuda.htm
If you know mahjong, you'll see that hanafuda is a similar but simpler game, where each opponent can see how close the other is to winning.

>Mahjong Fantasia
I only had an old Pentium with DOS in the early 2000s and the Chinese port of MF3 was the game that got me into mahjong. Also finished Lakers 2, I even managed to find an English patch for the menus. Cheers for those Taiwanese companies and the Web 1.0 fansites that shared game downloads.

Thanks for the recommendation, I'll keep it in mind when I have a chance to play hanafuda.
>Chinese port of MF3
Not many people play Chinese port of eroge.
I play many of them, the ports are mostly done by a Taiwanese company called Tan Ton Nerw.
In fact, I never play the game in PC-98.
I played the DOS/V versions (Japanese) or the Chinese ports.
All Lakers & MF series I played were in Chinese.

As far as the numbers go, nobody gets an increase, and Yuka and Chiaki decrease. I have never played anything PC98, that I recall, but I have not nutted as hard as I did to some animations and pixel art from Animahjong. I'd be very interested to play this and others that you may recommend of the same caliber.

>Just sick of all these slow menu-y and READ games the system has.
The biggest strength the system had was its high resolution.
It had an adult userbase who preferred slow brainy games. Maybe you can entertain yourself with some flight simulators like the Air Combat series.

Yeah I've noticed the system doesn't handle stuff where you got a lot of sprites moving around at the same time very well. Guess there prolly ain't really much of what I'm interested on the system game wise, even if the aesthetic is.

It's been years, but I think it translated the stats in the equipment menu and when you select an attack skill. None of the story was translated. And if the japanese and chinese versions use different encodings, you're bound to see garbled characters.

As for finding the chinese game you can find it here: https://www.myabandonware.com/game/sei-shojo-sentai-lakers-ii-cas#download

The PC-98 did add sprite support later on (even before the 9821 series), but it had clunky planar graphics a la IBM PCs and had no hardware aids for scrolling, object scaling, etc. Higher resolutions also meant coders had to scale down the actively rendered view and fit that into a fancy frame to disguise what they're doing in the name of performance.

Try platformers by C-labs (Rusty, Tokugeki Mix) or any of the action games made for Compile's Disc Station series: https://w.atwiki.jp/discstation/pages/506.html

There's also a ton of great STGs like Metal Force, Burning Dragon, Solid Lancer (a Starblade/Star Fox-like one), and Flame Zapper Kotsujin among others. Some good racers, too. Look at Bio_100%'s games for some easy stuff to try: https://archive.org/details/Bio100

To anons who played Lakers 2 Chinese version:
Do you play other Chinese original games?

I can't read Chinese but did try some others besides the Lakers port, as they were some of the few anime-style games I could play on my old PC with DOS.
Tried Empire of the Angel 2 back then but gave up after a frequent crash during the attack animation of the dinosaur knight. EotA 4 has an English version and I played it last year btw.
I also tried the port of High Reward. A game similar to Ogre Battle but with guns and i just fumbled through the menus. I should go back to the PC98 version.

Main menu all done. Everything is in uncompressed SHIF-JIS so it's been quite easy.
I plan to do the database and the battle status screens as in the ElvenLord chinese to english translation, and maybe try to do the techniques and equipment if they're as easy to access.
Don't expect too much, but the game should be easier to play for fellow eops.

It is a different game. They made the combat turn based and added posts on the map to railroad you.
DK2 on the PCE is a fairly straightforward port, they mainly cut or replaced the H-scenes and censored nudity in exchange you get a limited amount of voice acting.
DK&Grafitti was the last of the series to get released and redid the game and included some hints to the later story. One notable change is the addition of companions to make the game less monotonous. There's also relatively little censorship since the game had no h-scenes and little nudity to begin with.
