Shockingly good, yeah. Pretty flawless compatability, since Joe from GameSack finally put Abrasive to task on the seeking issues people had been reporting for a while. Funny how a video like that can whip your ass into shape.

Credit where credit is due, I suppose there can be a lot of dumbasses out there reporting bullshit, and it's tough to sift through what is legit and what is just someone trying to use an old busted unit or SD card.

It's pretty hard to justify the price when you can just get a bundle of 100 blank CDrs and basically have your entire library set for years to come. There's only two legitimate uses I can see and they both have easy counters:

1. Disk drive/laser dead: replacing your saturn is cheaper than this thing, sell your dead saturn to some enthusiast and make $40-60 from it instead, now you only have to spend $20 on a new Saturn.

2. Can't play netlink with a burned disk: this is true, but it's such a non issue considering there's not a lot of demand for netlink competitions and I don't think I've ever seen a single person in the Saturn threads show off their netlink. Only four games too. Not the strongest counter of course but this point would be so rare that almost anything can dismiss it.

Of the Saturn ODEs, Fenrir and Satiator are looking to be the better options. Fenrir is good because it's cheap, Satiator is good because you don't have to replace the drive. And both are getting plenty of support and are regularly getting updates to fix things.

MODE is mostly just style over substance. It costs about the same as a Satiator, but you still have to remove your disc drive, and then there's a bunch of really dumb shit they did in the implementation.

For example it was found that they don't clean up after themselves in RAM before booting a game with the fast boot option. So data from their menu system is still sitting there in RAM which can cause problems for games expecting to have cleared RAM upon boot since that's what the official Bios does before it loads the initial boot program of the game.

Another dumb one they did was instead of doing what a Mod chip does for dealing with the security ring and just sending the security ring data at boot when it's requested, they instead send it any time data is requested beyond the 650MB area of the disc, because they found some old document where Sega asked developers not to go beyond that size limit. In reality a real Saturn will read data on a disc well beyond that limit and quite a few games go beyond it. So any game that had data beyond that size would refuse to boot or just crash on the MODE because it would get Security Ring data instead of the actual data it was looking for.

On top of it all when these issues are brought up, they're usually very reluctant to fix them and instead insist it's the fault of the developer or the user for not doing something right. They've basically rubbed the Saturn Homebrew and Translation community the wrong way.

>> No.7712730

>>7709735
Yeah, no. Look at the release notes, those features had been included for a very long time. Abrasive just needs to do a better job updating info.

>> No.7712748

No I am talking about the seeking issues Joe pointed out, which caused issues with FMV games or caused tracks to loop, and that fix was in FW 157.

Looking at the release it was only 2 days before the video was posted, so no doubt Joe showed him that stuff. Joe typically makes his videos like weeks in advance.

Abrasive had been trying to track that stuff down for a while, and made lots of tools to try to find it. Glad it turned out just be an open/close thing, which in all honesty is a typical failover you need to account for in many things.

Oh I know about the Discord, and I was one of the people posting about it and trying to help Abrasive get to the root of the issue for months. Hell, I bet you and I chat on there sometimes haha.

Like I said, I respect Abrasive's work, and I know he was putting in the effort, but that issue was stalled since January, and it get fixed right as Joe puts out the video (which actually showed that the Satiator was way more compatible with stuff than people thought, almost everything he tested worked, and he didn't test the one game that didn't).

Maybe it's a coincidence, but I doubt it. Joe definitely spoke to Abrasive about it before putting up the video (which you can do without Discord).

>> No.7714779

With MODE? It's pretty much just stuff they do with their software that can interfere with any game really. The not clearing RAM issue caused problems with Grandia and it's translation patch as it resulted in garbage being drawn at the end of every line. They fixed it by just making it so if it detects Grandia they clear RAM, otherwise they don't, which is dumb when they should just be cleaning up after themselves anyways as it's good practice. Basically any game that expects clean RAM before it starts will be impacted by it.

The Security Ring issue impacts any game larger than 650MB and caused problems with the Lunar Silver Star Story patch forcing the devs to reduce the improved FMV quality to get it under 650MB.

Really those kind of issues raise a red flag to any developer as it just screams sloppy and lazy coding. And for how much the charge for it and how much they hype it as a premium high quality product it's kind of ridiculous to see these kind of corners get cut.

So it sounds like the issues mostly come up when playing patched games or other improvements. I have mode and only play games w/o any enhancements which is probably why I never noticed anything. >So it sounds like the issues mostly come up when playing patched games or other improvements.
It can literally happen with any game that expects clean RAM at start up. Last I checked it happens mostly when you use the fast boot option. The security ring issue will impact any game that is larger than 650MB.
