7702773 No.7702773 [Reply] [Original]

Is it really that brutal?

>> No.7702780

it's a pretty jarring spike in difficulty from the first game at the very least

>> No.7702782

It’s not that bad if you rack up lives using the first koopa in the first level.

>> No.7702790

Not that much, the biggest bullshit is the final castle by far.

>> No.7702793

>>7702773
I'd definitely recommend being great at the first game before even trying it, maybe beat World 8 repeatedly until you've got it down or something

>> No.7702816

The jump mechanics are different and it pops up on wind levels. Also, Mario has different mechanics from Luigi, Luigi slides more.

Worlds 1-4 is comparable to SMB 5-8. Worlds 5-8 are tough. World 9 is special ofc, and A-D are weird. You just have to try and play it yourself, its a really fun spin on the original game

>> No.7702979

>>7702773
If you try to do 100% on the famicom disk version, I say good luck cause you need to beat the game eight times to have access to the bonus world.

>> No.7703080

It’s an expansion pack that adds more nonsense but has plenty of good levels. People are just salty about the poison mushroom that killed them in the start of 1-1

>> No.7703095

>>7702773
Given its context, SMB2 is actually perfect for its time. People who pick it up now probably won't understand it because they didn't just spend the better part of the last year obsessively playing Super Mario Bros., a very strong contender for best game ever made when it was released. It was a phenomenon in Japan and people just played it over and over and over because they thought it was that fun. Now imagine if that awesome game you love so much got new levels that really test your skills. It was truly a game for people who had mastered the original. Without this context, SMB2 just seems like a hasty rehash of the original, a dumb hard mode romhack that barely adds anything. With the context, it's an example of Nintendo giving consumers EXACTLY what they wanted at that time.

>>7702773
You need to get really familiar with the physics, and some levels are puzzle-like. Once you memorize what to do it becomes much easier, though there's still a few tricky stages. It's really fun when you know what to do and you're sprinting through things.

>> No.7703271

>>7702773
Pretty hard, especially compared to the original game, but it's obviously beatable. If you intend to play it, just crack your knuckles and get to it.

>>7703080
The poison mushroom is honestly just a courtesy thing, it immediately tells the player "We're not gonna hold back, at all." It'd be much more insidious if it just started easy going for a level or two, but then just shot up suddenly.

>>7703095
This. For a western counter example, there's Doom. Base game is easy, Doom 2 is still not that tough, so Final Doom is designed to be especially hard, making the most thought out use out of the new monsters from Doom and Doom 2, to seriously test the skills of any player who loves Doom but crave the ultimate challenge.

Just like with Super Mario Bros. 'Lost Levels', scrubs may tell you that it's way too hard and punishing, but in reality it's mostly pretty fair, you just gotta be good at the game, and have some patience.

>> No.7703280

>>7703080
Even as a kid I knew the poison mushroom was obviously bad but I walked into it anyway just to see what it really did. If it actually made people mad then awesome.

>> No.7703325

It is great, but without the snes save feature, it is too difficult fir the general public. It probably took me 6 months to beat it when I was a kid.

I've got a few digital copies lying around. I felt pretty accomplished to beat it once, but knowing that I'd have to play the game eight times to get there is a bit of a turn off.
I take it the FDS didn't have a save function, and since you need to long play it, that's a minimum of 256 level clears just in the first 8 worlds. I can't imagine doing that in one sitting, you'd probably need to grind it out over several days and you couldn't play anything else on the console.
If I wanted to do it eventually, which version? I think I can emulate FDS in like Nestopia.

>> No.7704228

FDS has saving, no? Wasn't that part of the appeal?

>> No.7704246

I don't know off the top of my head. The math still stands but at least you can take breaks and play other games.

>> No.7704593

It doesn’t take that long to beat it 8 times you can use warp zones. Warpzoneless is only for world 9

The Famicom Disk System had a save system. I'm surprised you even considered the possibility that Nintendo actually expected players to leave their console on for days so they could beat the hardest Mario game 8 times in a row.
Also, you COULD just take two seconds to look this shit up before posting, but now I'm talking nonsense.

>I'm surprised you even considered the possibility that Nintendo actually expected players to leave their console on for days so they could beat the hardest Mario game 8 times in a row.
And as stupid as it sounds, it seems like something they would do, at least to me. Maybe we have different ideas about Nintendo.
>Also, you COULD just take two seconds to look this shit up before posting, but now I'm talking nonsense.
Like I said, off the top of my head. I could've looked it up but it didn't seem important enough when I made the post.

>>7704593
Is that so? I thought it was 8, 9, then A-D. I don't recall how we managed to get to 8 playthroughs though.

It's hard but I wouldn't say brutal. It's more of a puzzle game than anything.

Thos puzzles caught me off guard but besides that i sprinted the levels just had to get good and have reflexes
