I already own an OSSC and have no idea what any of the Retrotink 5x jargon means that people are pumped up about. Is this a big upgrade from the OSSC if I mainly play Saturn and Dreamcast?

>> No.7699891

I doubt it really. Even if you got a good price selling your ossc it'd still be like $100+ to pay the difference and I personally don't really think, particularly for those 2 systems it'd be $100 better performance or image quality.

the features I've seen people touting as an advantage over the ossc are resolution switching between 240p/480i without briefly losing signal - which ISN'T actually anything to do with the ossc, it totally depends on your TV, but this will be able to provide that with any TV I guess, and a more advanced deinterlacing solution for 480i stuff. I don't really have an issue with using bob deinterlace in combination with alternating scanlines and upsample 2x, looks pretty good to my eyes. also I think it can do 1440p out so if you want stuff to be even crisper or have a 1440p pc monitor it would be relevant to that

Got it. The bob deinterlacing "flicker" going away would be nice but never really bothered me much. Thanks anon.

If it doesn’t bother you personally then don’t worry about it, but getting rid of that would be worth the upgrade to me. Bob deinterlacing flicker looks pretty bad.

This thing will chew up an OSSC and shit it out. It will will pretty much be the new gold-standard.

Why? I see more inputs and much more convenient settings than the OSSC but that’s about all. The bob deinterlacing being gone will be nice but the 5x vs 2-3x is a minuscule difference. Am I missing something here?

Seems like the biggest reason to upgrade from an OSSC would be if you played a lot of PS2 since that's mostly 480i and would probably benefit greatly from the new deinterlace options. Dreamcast is almost all 480p and Saturn is 240p so no real need there.

It adds 4-20ms of lag (.25-1.25 frames), with no zero option. desu it may not matter to many, but it could be a deal breaker for displays that already had non-stellar performance.

>>7700219
Holy shit there's no zero lag option? Is he planning on fixing that down the line?

>> No.7700324

>>7699865
No, if you have the equipment to support an OSSC properly, it's going to be inferior to the OSSC for progressive content — because of the 4ms minimum input lag(can be 20ms in triple buffer mode). This is mainly an upgrade for people who play interlaced games or have shit capture cards. There are some Saturn games that switch alot between 480i and 240p, and that will work better on the RT5X, but that's a fringe case.

4ms-20ms of lag make this untrue, and capture card compatibility will be just as jank as the OSSC if you're not using Triple Buffer mode. It's going to be better for interlaced content, but imo a shitty CRT on Craigslist(or Kijiji) will be a million times better for 480i than ANY scaler ever will be.

I run my Wii/Gamecube through the 2X-M at 960p. It looks really good on my 4K TV. I've gotta imagine that anything past that would just sort of be diminishing returns? Not keen on the extra lag either. For PS2 bros this might be really great though

Useless for the DC unless you want to get a SCART cable.
