We had a pretty good thread but seems that it good archived due to spam, let's have another one.
I'm playing through Wave Race 64 now and enjoying it quite a lot, learning some techniques right now for the harder difficulties, after beating it I might go with Castlevania 64 or maybe one of the FPS on the system.
Feel free to discuss the system, the games or ask for questions and recommendations.

for platformers, Duck Dodgers 64 is fun, Space Station Silicon Valley is good, Rayman 2 is amazing (dreamcast version is the best but n64 version is still good), Bomberman Hero is alright for the most part, Chameleon Twist 1 and 2 are alright too, Glover is a love-hate it game so it's worth a try, Gex 3 is solid (though the ps1 version is better, the n64 version is still worth playing and leagues better than gex 64) and dunno if call it a platformer but Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon is really good.

>Storage limitations that meant developers had to be careful with their content or compression ability.
They're mad because they like to feel special when they're able to recommend a game no one else has played. There are people out there who genuinely feel superior to others by possessing knowledge they don't. They're unable to do this with the N64 since everyone who had an N64 usually has some games in common with another person who had the system, most of the "truly great" games are already known. They get bored by things they already know, so they constantly abandon games they find as soon as that "new feeling" wears off and move on to the next flavor of the month.

The real reason is it's a kneejerk counter-reaction to the old N64 praise that puts OoT and Mario 64 as the two best games of all time on top 10 lists, and the nostalgia around the great games it had making people forget it lacked a good library of more obscure stuff. Honestly though, the library is plenty good enough. It obviously lacks JRPGs but that's the main flaw, other than that for most people the games you end up playing are on par if not better than PS1. I mean for now when we look back in retrospect and know all the shit that's worth playing, it's easy to count the fact that PS1 had a larger amount of good shit so it wins, but that pool of good stuff was also pretty diluted by mediocre games. Meanwhile with the N64 all the good stuff rose to the top, so in a sense back then the N64 was a better console unless you actually knew all the right PS1 games to look for.

One reason is they can't emulate it, others are PCelitists who despise the fact the N64 had the technically best FPS (and other) games for a while on it. This fact is unimaginable now so those zoomies think that we're making it up. There's also people who grew up without it because their parents were on welfare and they couldn't afford a real console, their earliest memories of gaming are their dad playing the ps1 and burned all their games on CD-r, smoking in their caravan and damaging their brains at the same time while hogging the console and unable to get past the first level.

I wish they'd at least remember their talking points - the N64 had few rpgs for example is a decent point. Just making it up as you go along is the height of laziness.

One of my first jobs was working for a thrift store, I wouldn't even be able guess an estimate of the numerous amount of pirated, unofficial, burned PSX games I've seen come through. Most of the time these games would come in without cases, so most of them ended up being thrown away.

Even as far as "obscure" games for the N64 go, most of them are fairly well known by this point, thanks to the console's relatively small library. It's easy to keep track of and gauge interest in, you can more easily dismiss a game you've never heard of on N64 because most of the good games for the system already have decent fanbases to make their games known. There's little sense of "discovery" with the system's library that younger folks seem to be obsessed with. Agree with or like something popular and they think you're a sheep, similar to what you said about Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time. They're obsessed with being niche, standing out, having "refined tastes" by knowing what others don't. The large library of the PSX and cheap cost of CDs entices them that they could find "hidden gems" by some small low budget developer. This isn't hard to figure out if you've seen the rising interest for Lost Media, Trivia, "Icebergs", etc.

It might be comparable to say it's like the difference between a dirty lake and a clean well. The well may seem small and everyone may seem to know what it's in it and there's still a good amount of depth to it, but the lake despite having more unappealing qualities to it, has the greater possibility of holding something unknown. It's not bad to like or look for obscure games either, but my problem is that there seems to be people who make it their entire personality or become hipsters about it. They'll constantly hunt for obscure games solely because they're obscure and nothing else, making it hard to gauge what caught their interest. Even after finding something they like, they'll quickly move on instead of becoming a dedicated fan and spreading the word. Ironically, making it so it stays obscure or becomes obscure all over again. I'll never understand the people who become genuinely upset when something they're interested in becomes more well known.

but the PS version in that case is closer to the PC original, it is missing one level but it has the bonus levels in tact, while the level exclusive to the 64 version is totally not worth the exclusion of the 3-4 missing levels. I'm a bomberman collector and superfan so I'm gonna be biased in saying it's an amazing game, but it is a good game, yes. Both 64 and The Second Attack stray away from the traditional formula and go towards 3D exploration and narrative based gameplay. Where 64 is more focused on puzzles and collecting, The Second Attack is more like an action/adventure game with massive dungeon-like levels. Unlike other bomberman games you get elemental bombs, fire, wind, ice, electricity, and so on, which add variety to the combat (enemies have elemental weaknesses, the bombs have different explosion diameters, etc) as well as making puzzles more interesting. The little animal sidekick starts out weak but there are a bunch of different transformations in the game which let the little guy become very powerful to where he can summon power ups and kill enemies in one hit. It's a shame that the cartridge is so rare because it deters a lot of people from trying it out, and it doesn't emulate perfectly, but I'd really recommend trying it out on a flashcart or even a repro. It's easily my favorite game in my collection.
