Still working on the tank. I implemented some of the advice I was given last thread. It looks a bit better, but I think I messed with the lighting too much, it seems a bit pale to me now.
Also quickly threw together a little test arena to see if fighting it it fun or not. I'm pretty happy with it so far, the fight definitely has the sort of pace that I was picturing when making it, but the BFG projectiles do tend to hit a bit too hard. I might have to make some sort of custom projectile for it.

Theres func_fall and theres func_fall2. I dont know the source intimately but the FGD says fall2 is the improved/extended version. So thats the one I edited. And it is indeed in rubicon2.qc, just search for it.

Wolf3D is a much better designed game. Sometimes less is more. Blake Stone had some interesting ideas, but none of them were executed well and they fucked up the core gameplay by effectively removing hitstun and having downright stupid amounts of enemy health scaling with difficulty settings.

I think even the developers realized how awful those were, because I don't think there are any in Planet Strike. The enemy still shows up occasionally, but just on its own and not with any spawners.

Planet Strike really did a lot to improve over Aliens of Gold. I still like Wolf3D best on the engine for how tight and concise its gameplay is, but I can respect Planet Strike as being on par or arguably better in some regards. The only real missteps were making ammo pickups explode when shot and the new bosses having pretty bad sprites. Major improvements across the board, otherwise, especially to level design and quality of life. The zoomable minimap is a brilliant addition, giving you awareness of enemies that would sneak up on you otherwise and putting an end to wallhumping for secrets. Adding the first game's bosses to the regular enemy roster gave them more options for difficult encounters than just placing down firing squads of STAR troopers or mazes full of turrets. Of course it was all too little, too late, because Doom came out a week after Aliens of Gold and rendered the engine as a whole quite obsolete, but I have a strong appreciation for efforts to improve like that. They might've actually made something pretty good if they'd gotten another chance at less of a technology disadvantage.

I imagine the inclusion of fast monsters is largely due to the fact that Doom 1 doesn't have multiplayer only monsters at all, and Doom 2 and Final Doom only rarely have cyberdemons and masterminds added in a few maps. So all the multiplayer weapon spawns would just make things easier.
BTSX E1&E2 (which are included in the official ports) does have additional monsters throughout on multiplayer spawns, but the inclusion of fast monsters might throw their balance off.

Maybe this question doesn't belong here but not sure where else to ask.
What's the best way to add lots of guns to a wad, from a game design perspective? But that I mean: there's not a big overlap between them (at least not between the ones you carry), they all feel useful, the 'inventory' doesn't feel overcrowded, etc.
I can think of three solutions but I don't really like them that much.
1) Have several episodes with different weapons in each. For example, a 3 episode arc, with 8 different weapons in each, for a total of 24 different weapons. So there could be 3 'handgun' type guns, 1 in each episode, all different from each other, you can't carry all of the handguns at the same type because each belongs in a different episode.
2) There's just a wide spectrum of guns but you can't carry more than one 'type' of gun at the same time, much like in many modern console shooters or counter strike. So you might have a handgun (super pistol) and find a different one (uber revolver) but you can't have both at the same time because both are handguns, you must drop one to get the other.
3) Crafting? For each type of gun (handgun, shotgun, etc) you can upgrade them into different preset paths by using some kind of crafting system. You could also degrade them if needed.
Of course there's also the solution of just letting the players carry 50 guns but I honestly think at that point it's too much.
Any ideas are welcome.
Also: what do you think it's a good maximum amount of weapons to carry? Most games have something like 8-12, seems like a good compromise.

If you're doing it as an older shooter, do make sure the player has a decent amount of slots to fill, just 3 slots for something Doom-like would be very dull. Yeah, I feel like the Sabreclaw is too similar to the regular Golem (Sabreclaw should've been faster and should've hit harder, maybe a leap attack?) and Heretic could use an Archvile/ Pain Elemental equivalent, maybe a Warlock/ Necromancer type enemy that spawns fodder and can resurrect some enemies like the Disciples or Undead warriors. It doesn't have any hitscan enemies which is a good thing imo.

Firemace IIRC was supposed to be a Deathmatch only weapon but it got shoehorned in Singleplayer at the last minute and it shows.

Check out Preacher and Scythe X, both are about 10 maps but really good, especially Preacher, every map feels memorable and has tons of replayability with a cool trick that makes you start the map at one of randomly selected spots every time you play. The mini tank losing it's target thing is weird, it didn't use to do that. Shouldn't be too hard to fix, I'll take a look at it. The crash is puzzling though, it doesn't seem to happen every time. I think it might have something to do with the custom sounds playing too many times, which is weird since they're in the right format and have been properly converted and everything. If anyone here knows his shit about dehacked, I could use a hand with that problem

The lost soul attack is very janky. Since it was made for a flying enemy, the game will eventually crash unless you enable the "floating" tag on the thing. This alone wont cause it to fly, but it means it will keep bouncing until it hits something when attacking. The poor target memory only occurs if the thing has yet to hear the player. This and the tendency to infight are unavoidable since they're side effects of the attack itself.
The sprites look good btw, they mesh well with the original aesthetics. Though, I would seriously recommend that you enable blood splats for the tanks for gameplay purposes.

Lots of additional linedef functions to let you do a bunch of stuff, scrolling floors (including functioning conveyors), better fake bridges, various transfer effects. You want more door types, elevator types, etc, there's those.

Also as mentioned, being able to create a rudimentary form of scripting by releasing a Voodoo doll onto a conveyor and making it pass a bunch of walkover linedefs. 2048 Units Of /vr/ has a lot of good examples of simple "Voodoo Scripts" like that, and one or two more complex ones. Going Down has huge amounts of Voodoo Scripting like that, including a number of complex ones in a lot of the levels.

With newer updates and forks to PrBoom+, there's the addition of a more flexible version of DeHacked (which lets you add new frames and actors without having to sacrifice existing ones), as well as Universal Mapinfo, or UMAPINFO.
UMAPINFO lets you define stuff like level orders, which exit and secret exit (if any) a level goes to, which sky, which music track, if it uses the 666 and 667 specials, if monsters can telefrag you, if you want things divided up in episodes, whatever text crawls you feel like, etc. Basically all those things which the base Doom/Boom engine could actually do, but which there were previously no faculties for altering or inserting however you pleased, and were locked to certain level slots.
UMAPINFO is also cross compatible with Crispy Doom and GzDoom, so you wouldn't have to create a separate lump for them (the less advanced ports will just plain skip lines not relevant to them).

Because AD changes it to fire a projectile volley instead of lightning. Which, imo, makes it too similar to the Scrag in terms of gameplay. Someone else is probably using the same key, which is a classic hangup for games like that- everyone uses the same few CD keys that are passed around and then when they try to play multiplayer together the server says nuh-uh, something's wrong here. I know UT2004 includes an official no-CD patch as part of its last update, but I don't recall if it also disables checking for multiple instances of the same key in multiplayer (99% sure it does, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to play with my friends all of whom used my disc and key).

Recently I was tend to play games on higher difficulties to have a more challenging experience, which was a lot of fun. In case of Hexen 2, I tried to run first Blackmarch map on Lord/Nightmare and... Yeah, its been a bit too extreme. Homebrews are valid, there's a guy who comes around here occasionally to show us his latest progress on an FPS engine he's doing for the Sega Genesis, it's fun to see even if one's not particularly knowledgeable of the technicals. Can't remender if it used Raycasting (like Wolf3D) or Binary Space Partitioning (like Doom).

If you want an 'off the shelf' (so to say) Wolf3D style engine to build onto, ECWolf works. It even uses Decorate, like ZDoom ports do, so if you wanna do new weapons, enemies, decorations, items, etc, it's pretty easy to write that code, and the language is documented with examples on the ZDoom Wiki. Since these kinda games use about zero verticality, there's a lot of things you can just plain skip, like almost anything regarding height.

I was just mostly curious about other classes: I didn't want to pick someone just because it might make things easier: Crusader's Ice Mace is kind of weird (I played only as Cleric in Hexen), Necromancer seems to be the most popular class and Assassin just doesn't interest me all that much. Plus again, I wanted to have a more melee oriented experiences since I like it in DOOM/Heretic/Hexen when I can occasionally use melee weapons against enemies in certain situations.

Seemingly not. I just tried '-game hipnotic -game rogue -game VR' in a .bat out of curiosity and though I got different results than normal from picking up items it was still fucked. Puting rogue before hipnotic changes things again, but not for the better.

I'm starting to think the ammo box specifically might be something I've fucked up in moving vanilla ammo to 'items2' to make room for the new weapons. It literally never changes despite how weird the rest of the status bar is. Going to be a pain to revert though.

don't know about Keep (wip afaik), but Drake can handle weapons occupying the same slot, has new ammo types, doesn't break HUD, all without CSQC

Start with games that don't have smooth gliding movement. Teleporting or physical walking only. Then maybe hl alyx since it's probably the easiest to get into movement wise...
I don't get motion sick, but the first time I tried vr was with HL2 and it's weird movement on a headset set up for 60hz and it gave me that "suddenly falling" feeling in my stomach. So I can see how it's a real issue. And my balance was thrown off a few times when I bought my own headset, but no motion sickness. That takes a skosh getting used to...

Not specifically, no. I'm pretty sure most of the issue comes from me having to change bitflags around to make the new weapons fit since those are (presumably) what the engine reads to figure out hud icons. I have a general idea of how to go about fixing this though...

The DOE 'ammo types' technically have whole new weapons in addition to the actual ammo. If I can remove the weapons then I'll have enough space to put vanilla ammos back where they should be. Since those weapons all have the same animations as the normal ones, I'm pretty sure I can rig an actual ammo switch that swaps the weapon model and calls a different firing function.

Regardless though, I want to concentrate on getting full PD2 monster integration done for the next release before I delve too heavily into this autism.
