You know what is more difficult than Ghosts 'n Goblins, Mike Tyson's Punch Out, Friday the 13th, or Ninja Gaiden? The second special stage in Sonic 2.

It's a real pain to come off of defeating a really difficult game only to lose to one you should be able to beat.

And yes, I've beaten Sonic 2 multiple times. I'm just feeling sorry for myself because I got a game over after only making it as far as Metropolis Zone: Part 2.

I never understood why people hated Tails so much. He always follows your footsteps exactly, so it's not like he'll get hurt in the special zones unless you jump at the last instant so he has no time to do the same.

Besides, he's a lifesaver in the main game. He always does stuff like catching lost rings I can't reach, and sometimes getting stuck in bosses or enemies and killing them for me. Having slightly more trouble with the special stages is a small price to pay.

He significantly increases the total ring count needed to get emeralds, and there's a slight lag to his copying you, so if you jump out of the way of a bomb at the last second, Tails may not.

Outside of special stages, Tails following you causes some Asterons in the wall to activate that wouldn't with Sonic alone, and there's those moments where Tails will hit Robotnik, and you'll fall through Robotnik into a bottomless pit or lava or Robotnik himself and take damage or die, and those moments really stand out.

The thought occurs that the main problem is not having anyone to control Tails. The further thought occurs that with an emulator(maybe with joytokey fuckery) you could set up left analogue and trigger as Sonic's movement and jump, and right analogue and trigger as Tails'. Could be a bit brain bending, though.

>Could be a bit brain bending, though.

Have you ever played Ni no Kuni? There's a minigame in which you control two runners at once with two analog sticks. They cross over each other in the harder casino challenges.

I can't beat the last one, maybe I'll go try again, but being able to control two different characters on one screen when they go over and past each other is a sign of transhumanity. Normal people CANNOT do this.

I only manage to get all 7 emeralds in Sonic 2 once. with Knuckles

To be honst, all it takes is memorization, usually the rings appear in a certain pattern too. The challenge comes with the fact that in the later levels there's almost no error margin so if you miss a few rings you're out.
I also used to think Tails made this harder, but then again it's true that you don't lose rings as Sonic even if tails get hit... however, I seem to recall using both Sonic and Tails raised the required amount of rings per roung, but can't remember how true is tuat.

Sonic CD's UFO bonus levels are frustrating as hell mostly because some of the UFOs are a bitch and dodge all the time.

Sonic 1's bonus stages are the ones I completed the most. They're not as fun because it's mostly a pinball-like kind of minigame, but I love the music and psychedelic visuals. Playing that back in the day felt otherworldly.

Reading the thread, I think it's a bad thing that I have every special stage memorized to a point where I can recognize the stage in the first 2-3 ring patterns. They're complete fucking garbage, but at least they're relatively painless.

I just 100% completed Sonic 3D Blast (Genesis) for the first time today. It was a fun romp, but the special stages were super easy. I finished with well over required rings, fist time, every time. No, it's not exactly the same because in the 3D Blast (Saturn) special stages you can actually see stuff coming so you don't have to resort to unfun rote memorization bullshit in order to win, and there's a ton more variety to keep things interesting, especially in the later special stages.

Yeah, this. Especially in the original game. The remake made distances significantly easier to judge. Everything being much smoother, and in widescreen, helped a lot as well.

We have all been there with that first special stage...

Sonic 1 was really tough with Special Stages. You could get all 6 emeralds in the first 3 zones, but it only left you with room for 4 do-overs, maybe 5. That's a really narrow margin of error, especially when you consider that if you lose your rings late into the stage then you're screwed. Or, if you make a mistake in the stage it will also have a big consequence cos you are relying on being able to make it through some pretty tough levels with 50 rings intact. This is particularly hard with Starlight Zone.

>> No.771824

>>771809
Yeah, you only get 4 fuck ups, and that's assuming you can even get 50+ rings and not get hit in every level with a goal ring.
I think in one path in one of the Labyrinth Zone acts, you can only possibly get 48 or 49 rings.
