I honestly think most people just don't understand how to play it. It's a weird mix of arcade and driving sim controls and when you factor in the fact that you pretty much need to be using MT you're left with a tiny fraction of people who won't rage quit after spinning out when trying to turn. My biggest issue is the tuning. Adjusting the parts per track is confusing enough but giving you the choice of part manufacturer is dumb. What difference does it make if I use Michelin or Goodyear tires.

>> No.7651492

>>7650298
The gameplay's just bad. Cars feel like they're being pulled back when they accelerate and fell way too slow for their specs. Turning is stiff and drifting on tarmac is a mystery of the universe with how broken it is. I heard the dirt tracks are a bit better but it just doesn't feel good to play compared to a lot of other games. There's nothing to "understand" about it, not after seeing how GT plays like.

You just have to set the car's stats to specifically suit each stage then it gets a lot easier. Also down shift to a low gear to get high RPMs for drifting otherwise you'll just spin out. MT is kinda essential. It's sim drift controls so regulating with acceleration and counter steering rather than just tapping the e brake like most arcade racers.
>>7652060
It makes the game more about cornering properly rather than drifting. It's slightly easier but both version are difficult.

So I'm playing a Gran Turismo game (can't say which one) and I have a weird problem. I got a Yaris Turbo as my first car so I can blaze through Sunday Cup, FF, Vitz Cup, etc to get my first wave of dosh. The problem is, I feel nothing ever comes close to getting a RX7 FD as your second, FR car. That car is just straight up busted. It's your typical 276hp FR car but it only weighs ~1270kg and can be had for dirt cheap $35k-$40k. Everything else like NSX is MR. WRX and Evo are 4WD. Skyline, Supra, and 350Z are pigfat 1500kg+. Next in line after the FD is a S2000 which is light but lacking in power. There's literally no reason to not buy a FD and early game becomes a joke.

Jesus the AI in the early NFS games is total bullshit sometimes, the rubber banding in these games has always been really bad
Like in one race right after the start my opponent got an 8 second lead, they generally make almost no mistakes and can easily sweep through you, but what's most annoying is that they can take corners perfectly without slowing down.

Love to see a pre-3D-racing-games-lover around :)

In the Sega Genesis:
- Top Gear 2 has the same concept of making money and upgrading the car.
- Lotus Turbo Challenge doesn't have a "career" mode, but I find it quite enjoyable, and the state-of-the-art of the pseudo-3D racing games. Lotus II: RECS has more options, but doesn't feel as good as its predecessor.

In the SNES:
- Top Gear 2 is also in the SNES (as its inferior cousins Top Gear and Top Gear 3000); you may want to test both and decide which version do you prefer.
- Lamborghini American Challenge has a bet system, and the racing is good too.
- As you mentioned Road Rash, try Full Throttle: All-American Racing

In other systems:
- ZOSYA entertainment releases "Just a Gal" for the ZX Spectrum in 2019. The game can be freely downloaed. Not sure if this is too retro for you.

"Mode 7" racing games have aged badly, but if the career mode is more important than the racing part, there are several entries in the SNES and GBA catalog; mostly japanese exclusives (Drift King, GP-1, GT Racing, GT Advance...)

Every time I see that video it brings me back to those old NFS games, test drive hell even wipeout when game intros were meant to be hype machines for the gameplay that follows.

I feel the same and I don't understand why. It's not a particularly good looking or sounding game, it doesn't really do anything original, and the gameplay is nothing to write home about. The car selection is limited compared to other games but it has rare japanese cars which certainly has its own appeal. The only way I can explain how much I want to play the game is how the cars handle in a balance of sim and arcade with the damage being a game within a game. The progression just keeps pushing you and punishing you to continue advancing. You just want to unlock everything.

it's been a really long time since i've played it. I can remember being able to tune/upgrade pretty much any car to the point where it was an absolute rocket with go-kart handling. I definitely beat the whole game etc, I can remember one of the last license tests being probably one of the hardest things I've ever actually managed to accomplish in any video game. Online added a nice amount of stuff as well from what I recall. I would say it bears some similarity to Battle Gear 3, another really great game, in it's presentation/handling but that game doesn't let you get nearly as indepth with car customization etc.

TMN is probably the racing game I sunk the most time into, over 1000 hours of playing online and grinding my way up the global ranking got to about the top 0.5% of registered players but there were still 50,000 people in front of me. Still played TMNF a good bunch but then kinda lost interest in the series, not sure whether it was simply due to overexposure or due to Nadeo abandoning F2P releases.

Might give the saturn and ps2 versions a try since they apparently has even more courses/cars than the 32x one.

Don't turn and break at the same time, you'll lock the wheels and spin out. Break before turning. Stay on the outside of the turn before breaking, slow down to a speed that won't make you fly off the track, then turn into the apex (the inner edge of the turn) then accelerate as you exit.

Listen to >>7694925 though if you want something perhaps more interactive this is the exact thing gran turismo's license tests are there to teach the player. I would suggest GT3 or GT4 and just try and get silver on all the tests (gold is maddening) - if you can do that the basics of any racing ever made are now yours to command. Even games like wipeout follow the same principles.

NFS2 won't teach you anything, everyone who played it had issues with the janky physics and track design not suiting each other.

Sadly I don't think I can recommend a beginner friendly racing game. All of the good ones are maybe a little too tricky for beginners and all of the easy ones are quite long, repetitive and boring.

>What's so unique about them?
All RR games drift as if you are on rails - virtually no other game handles like that. Even the few modern "arcade inspired" games take their cues from other titles like scud race or daytona. Ridge racer is ridge racer - no other game handles like they do.

If you want kart racing the PS1has tons of them. For other games again it depends on what you want as there is a world of difference between say gran turismo and wipeout. Both are fantastic games but give two very different experiences.
