765072 No.765072 [Reply] [Original]

I googled around for a bit and I can't find any information on S-video mods for Playstation. I know the original japanese models had it but they removed it from NTSC consoles, I'm just hoping to mod my 1001 for s-video. Basically I'm just asking for links or if any of you have done it? Thanks

>> No.765113

There's no need to mod it; every single PSX model outputs S-Video fine. You just need an S-Video A/V cable, which you can find just about anywhere, usually labeled as a PS2 or 3 cable, but it works just the same.

Japan is NTSC.

Apart from more convenient connectors do early model PS1's offer any benefits? My childhood model is a 900X model.

Some early Playstations supposedly had sound output comparable to multi-thousand dollar sound systems at the time.

The serial port's really the only deal-breaker because that makes it ridiculously easy to run CD-Rs and imports. Unfortunately, I believe the 900X models removed that. Supposedly the RCA outputs on the back of the 1001 model make for better sound than the A/V cables but I've never noticed a difference; certainly nothing substantial enough to go nuts to buy one. I honestly think it was just a rumor from people who don't touch video game consoles that got blown out of proportion.

Your best bet is one of the later models like the 5 or 700Xs since the farther you go back the more likely it is to be a console with a shot later, though I've never had issues with any of mine, personally.

Though unless you really want to play backups, you're better off with just getting a PS2. It natively outputs 240p with component, which the original PlayStation even with S-Video cannot compare with unless you have SCART, and the issues the PS2 has with PSX games is incredibly minimal. Mortal Kombat Trilogy is the only outright unplayable game I've ever played on it.

>> No.765182

Uh, the PS1 already outputs S-video.

thanks for clearing that up, I've never owned a Japanese console so I always thought that they were different.
>>765113
Thanks I've seen the ps2 cables but wasn't sure if they would work so I guess I can just pick one of those up the next time I'm out.
>>765139
I have heard one play and its the main reason I picked up a 1001 model myself, the console sounds a little cleaner than the 7000 model I have but it truly shines when its hooked up to a nice amp and nice speakers. I still wouldn't put it up against a multi thousand dollar sound system but it does sound really nice and has a great sound stage effect. I will say it has a unique sound though and its definitely better than a cheap player.

Honestly installing a modchip on a PS1 is ridiculously easy too, even if you suck at soldering the contacts are enormous. Only console it's easier to install a modchip in is probably the Saturn.

wait for the PSIO and you wont need those pesky CDs anymore.

Yeah, NA & JP use the same signal, so they're NTSC-U and NTSC-J respectively. PAL is mostly European areas, and I believe Australia as well.

I think you mean Parallel port.

Yes, they had a shortage of the intended sound chip so they used what they had on hand (which happened to be a $200 DSP) in order to not stall out of the gate against Nintendo.

I have a SCPH-1002 and 7502.

When playing through a old CRT TV, you hardly notice the difference in sound quality.

So Nintendo lost to an audiophile CD player, and then to a DVD player.

It wasn't so much "disappointing third parties" as it was "not explicitly catering to their FMV and cheezy acting" fetish. Yamauchi might've made Nintendo's home console division rectally bleed money for an entire decade, but he still followed his ancient "third parties caused the crash of '83 because they controlled the console manufacturers" mentality,.

>> No.766862

So what model of PS1 should I look for if I want the audiophile one? SCPH 1001 or 1002? Online gives me both, so I can't tell. Also, is the aforementioned number what I'm looking for on the console, or is it something far more obscure?

>> No.766870

Any CD player you buy nowadays will kick its ass. Don't bother. The SCPH-100X are time bombs that like to melt their own laser and blow caps left and right.

the last digit is just the region code.

If you are in america it would be 1001, if you are in europe it will be 1002.

Also, all PS1's before the 700x had the better sound chip, but only the 100x had the RCA outputs.

Thanks.

I just wanna buy it so that I could potentially flip it for more money. Also, while generally regarded to have considerably inferior audio, I think the Saturn plays CDs really well and there's a nice crisp sound.

Replacing PSX lasers is easy, provided you know which parts to buy, and replacing capacitors is about the easiest thing you can do with a soldering iron.

Also fuck flipping anything that isn't overvalued garbage.

>> No.767452

There is no point in getting a SCPH-100x since all PSX's made before the 700x has the same DAC, they are just missing the RCA outputs which are easy as hell to add to one of the newer versions.

Best bet would be to get a 550x and mod it.
