So /vr/, from grading the most favorite to your least favorite, what would you grade all of the (retro) castlevanias of yor?

SOTN>RONDO>BLOODLINES>IV>III>I>II

>> No.750916

>>750906
Well

4
1
3
2

In that order.

CV2 - LOL
CV3 - 8/10
CV4 - 8/10

I never played Bloodlines yet I hear that they apparently brought the story/canon of the Dracula novel into the story/canon of Castlevania? How exactly did they do that?

>> No.750950

CV1 - CV4 - CV3 - Dracula X - Bloodlines - Rondo of Blood

>> No.750982

Never played any of those non-numbered ones up until SotN.

The Morris family has Belmont blood in it.

>> No.751003

1.- Rondo of Blood
2.- Castlevania 3
3.- Castlevania 1
4.- Castlevania 4
5.- Dracula X
6.- Bloodlines (Just because it has limited continues, otherwise it would be my 5th)

Can't play Chronicles because my emulator crashes after Medusa.

>> No.751019

>>750937

In Bloodlines they just say that Quincy Morris from the novel, who is the father of John Morris in the game, is a Belmont and leave it at that. Most fans assumed Bloodlines for the longest time wasn't part of the canon.

Portrait of Ruin however, acts mainly as a sequel to Bloodlines and "brings it back" into the canon. The Morris family are more like a branch family of the Belmonts, and while their Belmont blood allows them to wield the vampire killer, it also causes them to eventually die.

>> No.751029

Rondo>3>X68000/Chronicles>4>1>Dracula X>2>Vampire Killer>Haunted Castle

I haven't played Bloodlines, Adventure and Belmont's Revenge yet. I really should, but my backlog is pretty long at the moment.

Huh, that's rather interesting. So does that basically mean that the Belmont family is no more and pretty much past the torch per-say to the Morris family to deal with Dracula?

Nah, the Belmonts are still around (pic related).
Moris family is just an offshoot, a sister family if you will that shares some of the blood.

None of the post-SotN Castlevanias get to the same level, but most of them are pretty good. I recommend Aria of Sorrow and Order of Ecclesia, although your mileage may vary. Also, don't forget to play some of the classics like III, Bloodlines and Rondo of Blood.

so many memories,
super castlevania 4 is my favorite.
SOTN is close second,
castlevania 3 (akumajou densetsu) on the famicom is third.
rondo of blood is obviously awesome but I never had a chance to own it, only through emulation.

Also in b4 unbearably easy gameplay fans. They always lurk in every Castlevania thread.

Not related to the OP, but I have always fucking loved that artwork.

It's such a shame a widescreen version doesn't exist, otherwise I'd make it my wallpaper.

I honestly play the level like a bazillion times in a row to memorize it. I can't do that for the later levels if I wasted all my lives in the past levels. And I'm stressed out all the time because of that while in the other castlevanias I'm super chill.

Of those I've played trough:

Rondo of Blood - 5/5
Castlevania Chronicles/X68000 - 5/5
Bloodlines - 5/5
Castlevania - 4/5
Dracula's Curse - 4/5
Super Castlevania 4 - 4/5
Symphony of the Night - 4/5
Simon's Quest - 3/5
Dracula X - 3/5
MSX - 3/5
Haunted Castle - 2/5

Pic related is the game that kind of got me into Castlevania (and Konami in general).
Praise be bootleg carts and consoles, for without them I'd never have gotten to experience it as a kid!

Bloodlines has a password system, but it's kind of annoying to use.

>> No.751750

>>751732
The password system keeps track of your lives and continues.

I personally don't care that it has limited continues, Bloodlines is my favorite because each level is broken down into sections which almost every single part is memorable making an excellent and memorable game. It may have only six stages, but that is all it needs.

>> No.751774

out of the ones i've played, from favorite to least

>Rondo of Blood
>Castlevania III
>Chronicles/X68 (the ost accounts for a ton of this, admittedly)
>Bloodlines
>SotN
>Kid Dracula
>Castlevania
>Super Castlevania IV
>Dracula XX

I played through IV last night and I'm kinda mixed on it, presentation wise it's really neat and I like some of the atmospheric stuff it had but like

on my second time trying out the game I got through the first seven stages only dying once but then the remaining stages just gobble up lives since the things you're most likely to actually get hit by just kill you flat out and it felt like kind of a chore to finish

I liked the credits though!

Sage since this is a dead thread.

I gotta say my favorite is the 3rd game. Some of the best graphics on the NES, with many levels and bosses far more challenging than the original. The alt routes keep replays from getting too repetitive.
Castlevania would have to be next, with very good difficulty.
SOTN is my 3rd pick. While much easier than most of the pre-SOTN Castlevania games, the gameplay is very good, and nearly every Castlevania game since has been a carbon copy.
Bloodlines is great, and kicks my ass since I can't seem to play properly. I like it.
Super Castlevania 4 is mostly fun, but has a few gimmicky moments and the ability to whip anywhere does lessen the challenge.
Castlevania 2 isn't too terrible, but does have a number of problems. There is one section of a level later in the game where if you get hit you will fall through the floor and die. That is the most minor of the problems. Still not terrible.
I need to play everything else.
