The style is pretty much the same, except for every "material" looking more plasticky in general. But the chibi characters and even the simulated macro-photography depth of field effect are there.

It's more a matter of how realistic lighting can be currently simulated with realtime 3D graphics; even with a next-gen AAA realtime raytraced engine and GI it would still not have been quite there yet.

I'd say it can, but that it's extremely difficult and labor-intensive. Dragonball FighterZ is a good example; Their effects were so difficult and laborious that they almost would have just been better off doing a 2D game.

On the upshot, they did develop good skills for doing those kinds of 3D things.

I mean realistically, anything digitized from photos/clay models/etc. is just another form of sprites. Sprites were a compromise for low-resolution screens; Now that we can do 720p or 1080p or even 2160p as a target, the possibilities are there for very high-quality 2D visuals which essentially match real photos of clay scenes, or of artwork, etc. There's no reason you couldn't make all of your animations identically to how they did it in The Neverhood/SkullMonkeys, but as super high-detailed images sampled for 1080p or 4K screens. That's essentially what games like Rayman Legends, Ultimate Chicken Horse, or Wario Land Shake It are designed to be.

Not really, I'm not claiming older tech is inherently better, that would be just dumb. But limitations help disguise other limitations.

If you saw a digitized actor or model overlayed on a digitized photo background in crisp HD, your brain would notice inconsistencies in lighting and general integration more readily than in a low resolution game, specially in motion. So getting good results for superior technology involve leveraging at least proportionally superior savvy.

That gif >>7493769 wasn't really in support of a statement. This is a thread about nice photography-based visuals, so I contributed nice photography-based visuals while I was replying, as I'm doing now.

Again as I said in both posts above, I'm not claiming a modern game with digitized assets can't work, simply that it is actually more difficult to pull off properly to an equivalent level of final quality. The smart thing is to take an extreme stylistical approach, as is the case of The Swapper >>7494840 (the harsh lighting and small scale help), or Armikrog (nearly abstract characters and environments, and everything being made of clay as a unifier). Both do an ok job of compositing independent elements into a cohesive whole, but a more naturalistic look like in the Famitsu dioramas would be way trickier to achieve.

My point of view can be argued as any other, but I did mention the argument I'm basing it on: the more information there is, the easier it is to tell what's wrong with it. It's a pretty simple and universal concept, and specially true for visual arts. Proof and arguments aren't quite the same thing but since the former is rare, it's a good idea to at least provide some of the latter. Else all you've got is an opinion for the sake of itsel, and believing that a failure to volunteer anything to support it that could be argued against counts as proving it right by default is, if not silly, at least difficult to call "discussing" at all.

Given how they didn't even bother to put a set together, they probably just shot some existing japanese collectables for the western release cover of this one. The original is a (heavily unmarketable) illustration iirc.

Kind of what likely happened with SD Snatcher, which was probably inspired as a whole by chibi merchandising to begin with.
