7495198 No.7495198 [Reply] [Original]

I often hear people saying that the PS1 has a ton of great 2D games, but when asked what games, they always list the same stuff like Castlevania SOTN. I tried playing that once, but it was super confusing. The castle was ridiculously huge with tons of branching paths right off the bat and there was no indication of where to go or what to do. I like the Metroid games, but they at least start you off easy and slowly work up to knowing your way around the whole world. It feels like SOTN throws you right into the deep end.

But anyway, are there any other good 2D games on the PS1? I've heard of Alundra, pic related. I've also heard of Oddworld: Abe's Odysee. Are either of those worth playing? And recommend other good 2D PS1 games.

Oh, and no turn-based JRPG grindfests please.

Never heard of Alundra before now. It's definitely on my list. Thanks OP

What's the best version to emulate? I heard there's a PSP version. Is it just the PSP emulating PS1, or is it native? If so, how does it compare to the original.

Also, how does the original Oddworld hold up compared to New and Tasty? Is it still worth playing?

There's a few. Adventure of Little Ralph, Harmful Park, Gradius Gaiden, Korokoro Postnin (this one isn't amazing, but I still like it), every 2D Megaman game on the machine except X6 (that game sucks), Adventures of Lomax.

Tales of Destiny is an RPG, but it looks like a super-SNES game -- same resolution, same sort of art style, but more color and a rare few polygon effects. Also, real-time battles, but I dunno if it'd be your thing. Tales of Eternia (called "Destiny 2" in the US, even though there's a real Tales of Destiny 2 on PS2) is a similar sort of affair, but with more advanced visuals and faster combat.

Then, there's 2D gameplay, but 3D graphics games, like Einhander, R-Type Delta, G-Darius, and Klonoa. All are great, although G-Darius is my favorite of the lot.

It's such a divisive series it's probably best to just start with FF Adventure and then skip to the next one if you don't enjoy it. Most people think one or two games in the series are good and others suck, but which ones they love and hate is all over the board.

I don't understand this criticism. The game uses muted tones because it isn't an overbright children's fantasy story. The world is still vibrant and vivid, it just doesn't have a disgusting color palette akin to something like A Link to the Past (great game by the way, but let's be honest, it was gaudy as all fuck). If you can't see the beauty in pic related then we there's nothing further to discuss.

Pic related was actually the first game I got for my psx. It's a JP action-platformer where you take the roles of compy, human, raptor, and finally t-rex. Switching between the different characters keeps things fresh, as they all have their own special attributes, attacks, and approach to navigating through the levels. Collectables that can be found in secret paths/areas or that require tricky platforming and skill add a nice bit of depth to gameplay and replay value - that is, if you can actually beat the game. It's fucking tough. I think the farthest I made it without cheats was halfway through the raptor stages. The game also has superb graphics and sound effects for a ps1 game, as well as its very own orchestral soundtrack made specifically for the game.

The fuck? SotN railroads you hardcore until the inverted castle. There are very few split paths early on and the ones you run into are either dead ends forcing you back to the split, or they're side paths that just trace back to an earlier area.
