I need your help /vr/

I'm playing Super Metroid for the first time, and I've come to this part. I fell through the floor heading toward an energy tank, and now I can't find my way out.

I.found these guys in pic related, and I've discovered that the super missile makes them stop jumping, but other than that, I don't know what the fuck to do.

Please help!

That room is there to teach you how to walljump.

Thanks. I'm trying to get the hang of it, but most of the time I can't bounce off the wall. Do you have to hit the same spot?

It's a bit tricky at first.
Make sure you're spinning into the wall when you do it, and jump when her back is facing the other wall.

Bump. I'm not trying to sound retarded, but I can't get it to work. I managed to jump back off the wall once or twice just by trying a bunch of times. Am I overthinking it?

You have to tap the direction you're jumping to right before you jump off the wall to do it right. For example, right now you're facing right, when you do a somersault to that right wall, tap left first and then hit jump.

>> No.748483

you have to push the dpad in the opposite direction in this order

spinning jump at wall -> as you touch the wall press the button back <- and samush should temporarially change to a grappling position then while holding the directional button jump and repeat as you approach the other side. Spinjump, change directions, jump

But it may also be because I was using zsnes, which may fuck with the timing since it runs everything faster than intended.

OP here.

I figured it out! Thanks for all your help. Hopefully this will be the only thing I can't figure out on my own.

There was another part earlier in the game that I struggled with but eventually got down, and that was getting the x-ray scope. Was definitely a pain in the ass with the freezing and the spikes.

The game definitely lives up to the hype, by the way.

No, it doesn't fuck with wall jump timing at all.

In fact, there's very little "timing" to wall jumping at all. It's very forgiving considering how people have trouble with it. If you're really having trouble just watch for Samus' wall jump sprite when you start holding the opposite direction while you're hugging the wall. It's basically the game's way of saying "Hey you. Yes, you! If you press jump now Samus will wall jump!"

I never could wall jump in this game well, emulator or console. Ever time I get here on my pc I end up spending 10 minutes trying to get out while save stating on every ledge.

Sucks because other games make it easy like New Super Mario Brothers or Strider.

>> No.749103

>>749069
Make sure you're hitting right or left and not diagonally when you jump off the wall. I'm never able to do it with a 360 controller cause of the dpad but with a SNES controller it's pretty easy.

>> No.749373

Walljumping 101: Always start with a spinning jump. Straight vertical jumps don't work. So get the fuck back a little before starting.
Hit the opposite direction of the wall and jump at the same time.
Don't hit up or down during your shit or it'll take you out of the jump. You can recover, but it's difficult and unless your TAS or at super speedrunner level, you're better off not fucking around while jumping.
So long as your spinning towards any wall or floating ground at sufficient height, you can walljump it. So you can wall jump up a single wall if you come back at it quick enough.
The game is kind of bitchy about it sometimes, it helps to exaggerate your motion and tap the directions rather than roll, try to hit the sides of the dpad as squarely as possible so you don't come out of the jump.
Congratulations, you can walljump.

>> No.749379

>>748525
Walljumping is one of the few things that is easier to do on a keyboard because you aren't going to accidentally come out of it, which is the largest issue by far with a dpad.

This. First time I played Super Metroid, the streaming viewers made me jump into this hole. I was emulating on zsnes, with an LCD monitor using a PS3 controller.

Try and imagine how much bullshit lag there was and how angry I got. Oh and when they tricked me into the shinespark area too, I found out it's physically impossible to shinespark with a PS3 controller. I eventually had to use the keyboard to do it. That experience was so bad, it tainted Super Metroid for me.

That's actually kind of a problem since SM is completely unforgiving with the type of jump you perform based solely on the microsecond order that a direction key was hit in relation to the jump button.

The button timing is fairly precise, but it never varies.

You've just cheated through the coolest part of the game. You aren't qualified to say whether the game lives up to the hype.

Next time try not cheating. When you fail, try harder. If you continue to fail, play something else.

I fucking hated this when I first fell into it during my first playthrough... and yet, when I finally got out, there was a very satisfying feeling of accomplishment (and relief). I kinda miss that.

In subsequent playthroughs, I discovered that the Ascii Pad's auto-turbo was perfectly timed for bomb-jump chaining.
