Is there any genre that captures the essence of retro gaming better than the jrpg? No.
The jrpg is the full package, good gameplay, story, characters, layers of intrigue and tons of mechanics to learn, + infinite replay value, long adventure making sure you get your money's worth, not just a 20 min game you pump n dump at the arcades. Or a game broken by memorizing static patterns. People have been optimizing runs of Zelda and Chrono Trigger for decades because they are such deep games. People can talk about them for hours easily. they are real treasures you can appreciate at home.

Just see SMW romhacks, jRPGs are cool but niche as fuck

Ahhh, console video games (or vidcons as I call them), the ultimate medium of expression, able to convey any emotion ranging from hatred to love, loyalty to fear, all in front of our eyes. Ah, and with lovingly crafted art, music, and the ability to control the action, vidcons are the ultimate combination of the high arts. While I tend to play the stoic, I will be the first to admit that vidcons have driven me to cry, to scream and shout, to feel actual hate; such is the power of this force beyond our wildest reckoning. And here I am, before you, to tempt your tongues with the taint of such a tantalizing topic. And the Japanese, the true geniuses behind the world of video games. Pah, I throw my scorn upon such incompetents of the West who would mock the true art of the Japanese with 'games' such as Baldur's Gate and Madden. Perhaps it is that the West is not as intelligent as the East, but this is a matter for another day. Japan has given us such masterpieces as the Final Fantasy series, Star Ocean, Wild Arms, and of course, Arc the Lad. Yes, some of the finest vidcons in the world were created by Japanese. I come to you today to ask you in all earnesty, what is your favorite vidcon? I will reveal mine after the grand debate has illustriously begun, but not before the first poster falls victim to my plot of discussion.

I started with nes and I didn't play my first JRPPG till Chrono Cross(blew me away). I tried playing FF for nes recently and everything was great about it except for some very annoying mechanics that I can truly wonder how people played it back then. The spell system made magic pretty much pointless. You got poisoned nonfuckingstop, and the dumbest part is that your party would get misaligned from it but also money was hard to come by so you had to keep going back to towns to get healed.

Yea yea yea, filtered. But that shit is ridiculous. I had to play the PSP version and although I prefered the aesthetic of the original it was great.

I also played/beat the original DQ on nes recently and that one was still fair. Only "aged" part I can really remember is that you didn't automatically enter places you walked onto, you had to press the action button but that's not a big deal.

I played my first rpgs when I was 14. Beyond the Beyond for PS1 then Suikoden 1 and 2.
Didn't get into Beyond the Beyond but Suikoden 1 and 2 made me a fan for life. At the time I rented them and didn't have a memory card so I had to leave my PS1 on overnight and then carry on playing in the morning until I beat them.

I remember buying FF VII and I still didn't have a memory card, I thought I could just leave the game on overnight and beat it in the next day like I did with Suikoden, big mistake lmfao....

clunky as fuck, and JRPGs technically aren't RPGs
>story, characters, layers of intrigue
Only if you like faggy weeb shit.
>and tons of mechanics to learn
lol wut
>Infinite replay value
Only if you have Alzheimer's. Outside of alternative endings, JRPGs have zero replay value.
>long adventure making sure you get your money's worth
This is only a plus if the experience is enjoyable. JRPGs are a painfully tedious grind.

As much as JRPG's are shat on, I do like them a lot. Shin Megami Tensei is my favorite series and I wish I had more time to really sit down and play them all. My current run of Nocturne on hard is really fun. There's something about playing a game where you go into knowing your goal is a demonic eugenics program.
I fucking love the classic Fatlus memes too. Got any more, OP?

It's pretty good, though it was unfortunately rushed. Supposedly, casting bufu can freeze the game. Yes, the ice spell works too hard. Also, I recall that you have to change your character name on a new game plus or it corrupts the save or something else awful like that.
The game has had three releases total and each has its own quirks. The Saturn original's bonus dungeon was originally released as a super rare promotional disc limited to 1000 lucky random fans. The PS1 port has that weird 3D model warping effect, but includes the bonus dungeon and PocketStation demon raising. It also includes a gray alien with a leash. The 3DS lets you use play coins to boost an extra demon NPC that you can boost to have certain demons available to buy. Raidou is an extra super secret boss, and it's in English.
Every version has some frustrating features like demon loyalty. Get used to it, that's part of the fun.

Yes it's a great game no idea what those random facts have to do with anything did you beat the game or just google gamefaqs factoids and trivia about it?
