Not sure if anyone posted it but Civvie 11 dropped a new episode on Wolfenstein 3D a few hours ago. It's pretty good. Surprised it took this long but It was a given he would do this one eventually:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljjJhScJ4DI

Shame he didn't cover Spear of Destiny. I feel like it gets completely forgotten, its never included with most versions of the game, yet the Nocturnal Missions (Episode 4, 5, 6 - Wolf3D originally only had the first 2) always are.

SoD is better than the Nocturnal Mission in my opinion and features the first demon Adrian Carmack did in a big FPS sprite (Angel of Death, admittedly based on a tough sketch by Tom Hall)

Wow, bad opinions all in all. His hitscan attack is more than fair because you get a very obvious warning, and you have plenty of time to respond to it, thus avoiding all injury from it if done fast enough.

The Arch-Vile is genius because he forces you to break line of sight with him immediately, but then forces you to come out of cover as soon as possible because as he is so fast, and raises monsters, you don't get to ignore him or take a breather for even a quarter of a second. You can add some Zombies or a Baron to any of Doom's original encounters and many of them don't change in any meaningful way, but add an Arch-Vile and it turns the entire encounter on its head and you have to change your approach on the fly, even better if the Arch-Vile is let loose in the middle of an ongoing fight, that'll REALLY make the combat exciting.

Technically Nemesis from Catacomb 3D, which had sprites also done by Adrian, would count as a demon I think? It predates Wolfenstein 3D. If not I am sure other monsters in that are, it has pentagram textures fucking everywhere.

The beauty of Doom comes from how the monsters are mixed and matched with other elements of the engine, such as the terrain and weaponry you're provided, but I wouldn't say it's a perfect roster. Most monsters are just "big Imps" with some twist to them. Here's a tier list about the roles of the various Doom enemies, how they cross over and how sometimes they're way too niche to be good. If I'd have to remove a few demons, I'd probably pick something like the Zombieman/SS Soldier, one of the hell nobles (probably Barons), or if I'm feeling especially cruel Spectres (because in a lot of situations you can see them just fine), though it's a great roster as it is and I wouldn't want anything removed.

The higher damage tolerance and damage output of the nobles I think makes them valuable in their own right, being less easy to take down than an Imp, and hurting more, does make either of them a priority target. There's also the infighting angle, a Baron can take a lot of abuse, so if he gets pissed off at some other demons, he can kill a lot of them in pretty short order.

The shotgun baldy I wouldn't call even slightly redundant, he's the regular zombieman except he's actually very threatening, instead of a measly single bullet which may hurt you for like +10hp if you're really unlucky, this dude can do you in bad, and he can also hurt other monsters really bad, this all being made up for by him being very fragile.

Good to see some love for Episode 5. I don't really agree with his tendency to sit at chokepoints or his use of WASD (the game plays ideally on a mouse alone IMO). He doesn't move enough in a fight and because of that he ruins E6M6 for himself by kiting the entire map into one doorway.

It's a very evil game that can be harder than the rest with the way it's difficulties scale, so be aware of what you're getting into. If you're going in blind, trying it on Well Done might be a huge turn-off; that difficulty is more reserved for a replay, as is Extra Crispy. Lightly Broiled or Pink on the Inside are much more sensible choices for a first time through.
If you're going as >>7491961 suggested and going with GDX you can customize the difficulty settings more to your liking.

So I started to toy abit more with Eternity after playing the Heartland. The lack of lag is incredible. This is the smoothest Doom I've ever experienced. Even prboom+ lagged on map 26 of Eviternity, but this has no lag in slightest. Also it's nice bonus for having episode menu, which couldn't be done in prboom+. Nice port. >His Majesty ToD gladdened me with his fresh record for a stylish, dreadful,
>cruel map located in the bowels of Hell. His result is far below Vile's classic
>record (6:41), which i considered absolutely godly a few years ago.

>Quickly I started working on my answer to ToD's demo, because I was thinking of

>was 5:12. After many more hours of practicing the run and polishing my strategy,
>I finally reached the exit for the second time, breaking the 5:00 mark with a
>huge margin.

>Despite totally shaky performance in the end, I won't improve this demo further,
>unless ToD takes it back. It was the most painful of all my regular UV Max runs
>(including the one for the dreaded MM2 MAP28). When playing with an aggressive
>route, the monsters are scattered around unpredictably and it becomes very hard
>to watch out for their heavy projectiles (which turn me into an invalid with one
>hit from the back, because of zero armor). Of course, the cybers owned me a few
>times as well, but they are relatively easy to handle if you strafe widely
>enough to get out of the potential zone of rocket hits. Two barons and a vile
>guarding the BFG killed me a lot more times.

The changes in functionality between versions are in the game executable code, not in the data file. A source port has to emulate them. See the game versions that are emulated in Choco-based ports:

I think this misinformation needs to die already. Static portals in GZDoom are functionally identical to Eternity portals, despite being implemented differently. Actors, hitscan, sound, sight, even dynamic lights traverse between them (albeit with minor bugs on shadowmaps), the automap can overlay those portals as Eternity would, and there's a lot of portal-aware vector math functions to handle them in mod scripting, too.

Thanks to decino, I've been playing through Heartland doing blind UV pistol start no saves. He taught me that you don't need to memorize traps to beat them, you need to learn how to read the situation on the fly and eliminate the top priority targets. I still die a few times per map (I'm on 04 now), especially to the suicide bombers, but at no point does it feel unfair, even though it does get really intense

6502 assembly sucks. My point is that the looking up and down restriction allows you to have perspective correct wall texturing with a very simple linear walk in one axis across a texture, because a vertical line in texture space always matches a perfectly vertical line in screen-space, and it always has constant depth (which means no expensive divisions per-pixel).

Once you add looking up and down, vertical columns in a wall become arbitrarily angled in screen space, and no longer constant depth, so it gets trickier and slower. Definitely not impossible for a software renderer, especially on modern hardware, but not as trivial as people here make it sound.

Do you really hate whenever anyone comes in here with a bit of technical knowledge?

I believe with OpenGL you basically have everything ready. You can just google and include ready to use shaders for the whole postprocessing pipeline including not only various advanced lightning, but also shit like HDR, volumetric fog etc. It would be hard if you have to come with algorithms on your own, but not only algorithms are done long ago, they were also implemented hundreds of times everywhere, so you can just use existing code. With non-conventional rendering implementing even much more basic stuff can be harder just because you have to invent everything on your own.

That is definitely true to some extent, but those same dynamic lighting algorithms work mostly the same in a doom style engine, but they're substantially more efficient (for software rendering) since your depth is always the same for each span drawn.

You say that from the perspective of someone that only plays custom wads and pistolstarts each level. In the actual, commercially released game, zombiemen provided essential cannon fodder for early game and learning. It was also logical for them to appear at Mars base levels just for the atmosphere - it would be strange if it was filled only with demons, and it gave players a peek at how the personnel looked before the invasion.
As for the SS soldiers, i don't think they really count. They are here just for a funny secret level.

I just think Wolf3D is perfectly playable on a mouse by itself. You don't need any controls beyond shoot, strafe, and use, and the mouse gives you finer precision to your movement than a keyboard.

>> No.7495257

I can see your line of thinking. Personally, I think that Wolfenstein 3D is the kind of game where using the mouse to move (that shit which people got novert for to disable in Doom), actually works supremely well, given the complete lack of height variation or anything like that. It really lets you make some _extremely_ smooth maneuvers really fast, and given that there's no holes to fall into, and that all walls are at exact increments, perfectly flat, and always at 90 degree angles, there's seldom anything to get stuck on.

At first, this disappointed me, but skillsaw uses these nerfed cybruisers like hellknights (as in he places lots of them) because that's basically what these nerfed cybruisers are, except that they are rocket immune, which does make fights more spicy because this is one enemy in an arena fight that you can't melt with rockets. I think it depends more on if you prefer vanilla-ish smaller maps or Boom maps with more mapping trickery (e.g. the 3D bridge on map 1).

Well, the gun doesn't fire in a straight line exactly matching the player's PoV. Even with centered weapons ala the original weaponsets (let alone how awkward things can get with calculating angled weapons) the visual distinction is not that of iron sights. The Default view of crosshairs is not realistic because it is a magical floating representation of where the gun is aiming, but not actually a 1:1 representation of its firing trajectory.
I really fucking hate it, especially because of all of the math that gets involved with it (especially when dealing with angled weapons) which is why I love stuff like the dynamic crosshair mod that gives it a bit of a "laser sight-esque" approach to how it works, and does the calculations for me. I don't know if I agree with graf making hitscans follow the rules of "shots not originating from the center of the screen" but for projectiles at least it makes sense for them to match their weapon's origin.

Okay, so I can change a bunch of stuff with DeHackEd, and I can change things in the WAD, for example, with DEH, I can change how enemies behave, how weapons are used, when they fire, what ammo they use, what sounds they use, and change properties of pickups and such

With WADs, I'm changing the core ASSETS, the actual textures, sprites, sounds, levels, etc.

I'm reading you should never make an IWAD, just PWADs, but I want to drastically change how Doom works, a TC, why shouldn't I touch the IWAD?

>> No.7496408

>>7496401
the IWAD is basically the core file itself, aka the commercial product.

PWADs/PK3s/etc are all overrides of content within the IWAD, while still requiring the IWAD itself to function. its a big part of how things stay legal, by requiring the commercial assets to be provided beforehand. it can also fuck things up a lot in terms of internal assumptions in code if they're fucked with directly instead of just overridden.

Kinda? Part of the issue with that is that the languages like ACS and Decorate were designed to account for those things, at least in terms of supplied implications.
Zscript is by far the most "Fuck it make you own shit up" language in terms of adjusting vanilla limitations, but the issues then become a combination of making sure all the affected code is correctly compensating for your changes, as well as, well, requiring the nein chicken's sourceport.

There isn't really any good reason to directly modify an IWAD, especially since it would require every individual user to make the same modifications to match your changes exactly. The only way to assure that would be to illegally provide a your own modified version of the commercial product, thus making your outreach both limited and illegal.

It wouldn't be illegal (I don't think? haven't read up on the terms for FreeDoom;s usage,) but it would be kinda a dick move. And also a bit counter intuitive, since people would need to download the entire modded version of FreeDoom, and not just the changes you made. As for things like jumping and crouching, those are more on the sourceport side than the IWAD, even games like the Raven ones did vertical look a lot differently than the mouselook you're likely used to.
Just stick to PK3 format with stuff like Decorate. The replaces command is specifically designed to do the kind of stuff you want, and a good chunk of sourceports support it without any issue. It doesn't require more than notepad.

also I don't like participating in talking about ecelebs but Gman sucks, CV is okay, I like that he does deep dives in totally forgotten FPS games that I wouldn't even know otherwise, for most games I just find longplays and skip around to get an idea of what the game is like, I do the same for WADs/mods

I don't know if anyone would argue he's good at doom or mods of it, I've personally seen him shit the bed with my own mods ignoring a lot of the built in descriptions and features that would have corrected him. He's also notoriously bad with anything involving splash damage.
I still think he's a wholesome lad who does a lot to bring interest to new mods, and have found a good chunk of my favorites through him in the past.

A lot of bullshit regarding GZDoom and the various characters involved with it in this thread. I for one really like GZDoom. Might even say I love it. It has served me quite well over the past few years. I agree hardware becoming outdated sucks (I dealt with that for a while) but the only real gripe I could make about the engine itself is performance. I really hope that gets improved soon because in some cases modern AAAyyy games run smoother on ultra than GZ.

I do agree with what some anons have been saying over the past few months about the way users get treated by the more prominent figures, seems like it can be pretty outrageous. Probably my biggest regret regarding Doom and being a creator is learning about all this hoopla. I genuinely, do not give a flying fuck about any of this shit. I mostly come to these threads for oldfag wisdom and some deep lore which I have learned quite a bit so for that I'm grateful. Take the good with the bad I guess
