I got this shit because everyone raved about its d-pad, which was admittedly nice, but it started dropping inputs after a week of use. Are 8bitdo controllers decent? I heard their quality has gotten better as of late.

notice how after snes nintendo just gave up on the control pad and just made everything analog stick control. I was really hoping they'd bring it back with the Wii, but no every fucking game requires the nunjuck. Sega on the other hand as early as the Master System had diagonals on their control pad and it was easier on the thumb.

Any way to improve a d-pad? Like what could someone add or do to bring it to the next level?

>> No.7489426

>>7489415
I don't know what could be added to d-pads, but a good d-pad should be always a round one that doesn't allow for accidental diagonals. The only advantage of cross shaped d-pads or the sony ones is that it's not as easy to register a diagonal while trying to tap on cardinal directions (with some exceptions). If a round d-pad only makes it easy to register a diagonal when you intend to, that becomes superior.

Also microswitches are gay unless they are ridiculously soft.

Playing Tiny Toon Adventures right now and the place where you have to slide under the spikes shows how fucking bad DS4 actually is. You expect your character to stay down if you hold "down", but holy shit this damn snoy abomination can't even do such a simple thing.
I even put the camera to double check if I'm not holding the button at some point. But no, DS4 just decides to trigger "left/right" randomly when I'm holding "down". Guess I need another gamepad for retro games.

In this picture, the N64 controller, no question.

In general, the Wii Classic Controller and Classic Controller pro. The d-pad on the Wii U Pro Controller is also great.

If I had to chose after that, the original D-pad of the Nintendo DS. To rank them from best to worst: SNES, Gameboy/Virtual Boy, NES/Famicom, Gameboy Advance, DSLite, and Gamecube. (I don't count Switch since 4 buttons aren't really a D-pad despite a D-pad essentially being 4 buttons.) The NES and Gameboy D-pads are too stiff, the SNES D-pad is too loose, ditto for the DSLite D-pad. Really, the classic controller was the only one to get it right but ironically the N64's D-pad was fantastic given how little use it got.

The D-pad of the Gamecube and GBA were inexcusably bad, honestly, and there's no good reason they didn't go with the original Nintendo DS's far superior clicky D-Pad, which is ideal, durable and responsive. The DSLite was likewise a downgrade. Overall, Nintendo's D-pads have been quite spotty for no good reason.
