Situation Critical for the Apple ][ - Top-down shmup levels, side-scrolling shump levels, and smash-tv-esque arena shooter levels to cap it off.

Even better than that is Xain'd Sleena, but i guess that's more run and gun + shmup. The run and gun is awesome, absolutely ground breaking for the mid eighties, but the shmup levels are mostly just annoying.

Retro-bit 8-button Sega Genesis. Will run you about 15 dollars. I'd recommend a Saturn controller over everything else, but their (Retro-bit) Saturn controllers seem to be flimsy/prone to breakage, and the Genesis controllers don't have that problem.
