As far as black mages, the elemental spells aren't just copies of the same thing. The fire spell is quick-casting, but single-target, and can inflict Oil (which now works as advertised). The lightning spell hits a line of 7 squares in front of you instantly. Other spells and job classes have been reworked as well.

Oh, and enemies have more skills can use phoenix down. You got to lure them with a target to kill or block off their allies' corpses until they crystallize.

Archer isn't versatile, but if you study the turn list, you can pull off ridiculous charges on enemies that just moved and often cripple them right off the bat. Unfortunately, no secondary ability really supplements it well except for those that are universally useful.

Time Mage is terrible as a primary class. You want its abilities so you can attach it to another class, but it can't do anything much on its own besides the occasional Haste, so you need a strong secondary before you can really grind up.

Samurai has a couple cool abilities, but I always feel like it's a clunky class. I don't like using it.

I never feel compelled to make a Geomancer, ever, and to this date I have never even used Dancer, Bard, or Mime to even know if they suck or not.

>> No.749319

>>749308
I like the group you threw out there...

Except Geomancer and Samurai, I'll try to give them an arguement

So Geomancer is pretty good because of their geomancing ability (of course). It's mana-free, Instant damage that always hits.

The geomancy magic hits in a traditional 5 tile area, and deals minor damage, but the important thing is it ALWAYS hits the target, no matter what their evade is.

Also, they could use swords/axes, so they make good fighters as well.

Samurai's at first glance ARE a clunky class, great way to describe them.

They can't wield a shield to my knowledge, and their damage is pretty minimal for a katana user.

However, the ability of the katana's can be amazing. If you stock up on multiple katana's of every type, most of the moves can do quite a lot..

Such as a large area effect heal, damage in a large area, or damage in a line, lot's of different things

Towards the top. It's a great and complex game with a very good story and an amazing soundtrack.

It can be easily broken, but so can most other stat-based games, and it's easily fixable by a single rule: play without random encounters. If you only EVER play story battles and never grind purposefully (keeping enemies alive with spells etc.), it's a very challenging, very tactical and very rewarding experience.

I always wanted to ask this question of FFT fans. I played it a bit never got far because I suck at it or just boring to my taste.

What is the use for recruiting have mook characters? When Named characters are better in almost every way.

Why give named characters, say Agiras any other job than their default (Ramza excluded)? When her Holy Knight default job is better than most other jobs in every way? Other named characters are even stronger.

Why use White mages when Chemists are better at healing and can even use guns?

The job system is amazing on paper but to me it seem that is full of redundancy. Since everyone can have 4 active skills at once. There are only a few skills that are actually needed. For instance is there any otehr reason to level up a knight besides learning to wear heavy armor (and unlocking other jobs).

It seems like you have so many opportunities to choose from but most of them are just there for novelty's sake.

Since those Battles that matter will be fought by the super powered named characters anyways.

All this coupled by the game's unusually high difficulty (in FF standards at least) and time consuming grinding, doesn't that eliminates the need for a job system at the first place?

>> No.751649

>>751616
>extreme difficulty

Not really man, the game is pretty easy, the only difficult parts could be the battles against the zodiak braves, and cave with many levels

I kind of disagree with the jobs being redundant..

I mean some are obviously not as good as others, but it's all about customization. If you like the abilities of certain jobs, you could combine that with a different job.

And yea, white mages suck, but who actually uses white mage anyway?

Agreed with named characters and their home job. They should stay that job, and probably master chemist for secondary.

>> No.751675

>>751616
>What is the use for recruiting have mook characters? When Named characters are better in almost every way.
Technically, you can probably get better stats if you level a guy all the way from 1. But in general, yeah, having the extra skill set just seems to make the others better.

>Why give named characters, say Agiras any other job than their default (Ramza excluded)? When her Holy Knight default job is better than most other jobs in every way?
Because variety is still good even if you've got costless sword skills, and you'd get bored if you couldn't further develop those characters. There are situations where those sword skills or Mustadio's aiming aren't necessarily the best option for them. It's rare, but it's just good to have options.

>Why use White mages when Chemists are better at healing and can even use guns?
If you keep your units close and supporting each other, healing spells are very effective considering they target multiple units. Plus, they get other buffs too, whereas Chemist only heals single targets and status effects. But, I will say that Phoenix Downs are a much safer option in cases where your Raise can actually miss and fuck you over.

>The job system is amazing on paper but to me it seem that is full of redundancy. Since everyone can have 4 active skills at once. There are only a few skills that are actually needed. It's true, the system could have used some polishing and rearranging. In the case of the Knight, breaking equipment can be really fucking crippling, especially weapons. You can sometimes turn some really strong human enemies into mice with that kind of shit. Skill break isn't really as useful though; it's nice if you know someone's just going to be auto-attacking you but most of the time you should just be damaging them instead.

For example, Let's say you had 2 knights, one with weapon block, and the other with counter

Knight attacks knight with counter, and the knight blocks with his shield.

It's like X-Com or Ogre Battle. The generic, no story, unlucky enough to be following your orders units are what make the game great.

You build them. You give them purpose. They're yours and not another writers.

Like I remember my first ever playthrough and I was going against Velius. Motherfucker had me dead to rights and I thought I was gonna have to try again. Most of my party dead and who saves my ass?

That EXACTLY is what I want to have but I can't because they are redundant novelty items, like I said the important battles are there for the named characters who have their own superior jobs and you cannot even remove them from the battle because it is scripted they have to be there.

I would gthrow all my money to Square if they would make an FFT that is like X-com. Make the character jobs not be 90% redundant and remove make the named characters optional choices. >What is the use for recruiting have mook characters? When Named characters are better in almost every way.
better Zodiac compatibility among your squad, access to the squire skillset as opposed to the special class ones(mostly just for accumulate).

>Why give named characters, say Agiras any other job than their default (Ramza excluded)? When her Holy Knight default job is better than most other jobs in every way? Other named characters are even stronger.

Stat growths. IIRC Agrias's holy knight job class has pretty bad stat growths and doesn't really shine till Knight swords start coming in.(sadly Orlandu outclasses her and the entire game)

>Why use White mages when Chemists are better at healing and can even use guns?
Holy sniping, early AoE healing, better revive spells.

>The job system is amazing on paper but to me it seem that is full of redundancy. Since everyone can have 4 active skills at once. There are only a few skills that are actually needed. For instance is there any otehr reason to level up a knight besides learning to wear heavy armor (and unlocking other jobs).

To be fair the knight skillset by itself isn't very good, mostly due to low accuracy and Knight's terrible speed at the start. However combine say the Knight skillset with Mustadio or chemists with guns or just slap equip crossbows on a knight then you have a fairly annoying unit. But yes, the job system's balance is a joke. Hence, the reason mods like the ones at Insane difficulty or FFHacktics exist.
