I would like to comeback to this classic.
Which version of the game is superior the PC or original PS1 version?

If single player, PS1 is probably easier to do. If you wanna do multiplayer, google around for the pre-patched PC version all setup for multiplayer.

I heard that some maps are different in the PC version.

A lot of ps1 to pc ports of that era were slightly butchered.
Pc version of tomb raider for example had missing effects, worse lighting and missing music.
I don't know if TM2 is as bad, it might have patches, but for singleplayer it might be easier to just emulate and upscale it if you prefer a crisp image.
The only upsides the pc port may have is the ability to play it in 4k with ease, enable texture filtering and maybe mod it.

it's because the game was designed with that specific hardware in mind.
at the time console and pc architecture worked very differently from one another, and in som cases it was just easier to make different games for each platform, even if the game was a multiplat (look at the first two Harry Potter games on each system).
stuff like lighting and visual effects was probably not something you could just port over to the pc version, the pc hardware did not know what to do with any of it, so they would have to redo everything from scratch, and they likely did not have the time or budget to do so.

TM3 and TM4 are the most technologically advanced Twisted Metal games.

The thing is that, in the other TM games, including the latest PS3 game, the AI isn't really "real", it only exists when the player is nearby (otherwise they just roam aimlessly), only attacks the player, never actively goes after items or health (only by accident), isn't limited by their inventories on what they use, never actively hunts down the player and have no sense of self-preservation. The AI in these games is there to present a fun challenge to the player, without being frustrating.

In TM3 and 4, the AI is "real", it actively exists on the map, not just when the player is near, it intentionally targets each other, it's limited by what it collects (no asspulling items), it flees from combat when at low health and actively seeks health pickups, it becomes more aggressive when the player is at low health.

What went wrong? How can a real AI be less fun than a fake one?

There are hundreds of games with a more advanced AI than games that came before.
But everything else sucked in comparison.

This is the case with 3 and 4,worse maps, worse graphics, worse drivers and the controls weren't that good.
Maybe only the OST was better.

The campy but edgy style worked for TM but 3 and 4 pushed it too far to the point it was obnoxious.

I don't recall any other boss having 2 phases.

It makes a comeback in Head On and is playable but Tower Tooth was such a bigger target that was impossible to not hit it.

Warhawk in Black was tough and dragged for a while given the requirements to damage him.

Same for Minion in Black with that shield,it's more of a chore than actually difficult.

Primeval in TM 3 had all the drivers specials but just Minion in previous games in the end.

Sweet Tooth in TM 4 was stupidly overpowered with that special move that almost one shot killed you.

TM3. The RealPhysics engine was sorely underrated. Get knocked on your hood and slide for 900' spinning...in first person mode I could give lots of ppl motion sickness. It was great.

TM 2012 was a fun game,it felt like a combination of Black and TM2 in terms of tone.
The problem was the lack of characters, divided in factions instead.

The soundtrack was great too,it did so many things right, too bad it came out too late during PS3 lifespan and vehicular combat games weren't that common anymore.

Even Carmaggeddon despite its revival with crowdfunding didn't do that well either.

Carmageddon reincarnation was hit with a double whammy of 1) being niche for the time it came out and 2) their big TECHNOLOGY prevew of their deformation system was released a week after Bugbear showed off Wreckfest (well, next car game at the time) properly and that made carma look like amatuer hour. Carma sold so bad stainless sold the IP to THQ (who amusingly own bugbear - so maybe the finns can pick up where those crazy island folks left off).

I have a great many issues with reincarnation that are all tied down to it sticking too closely to the design of the old games that were the way they were due to technical limitations of the day.

I guess they tried to appease the fans of the games but at the same time you need to evolve the formula in some way.

TM 2012 did it,offering new features that enhanced the experience.

Carmageddon, along with Vigilante 8 were big shots that filled the void that TM left when it was at its lowest point.

While it's good going back to the classics you have to offer something new after you've been absent for over a decade.

First tomb raider had no 3D acceleration on PC and it was all software rendering until matrox mystique helped make a patch for their API. Eventually it got support for Voodoo cards and products from other vendors. Most PC gamers didn't have a 3d card whatsoever when tomb raider launched.

PC's in 1996/97 were shit to develop for as each game often needed patches for different brands of video cards, and there were far more vendors compared to the ATI/Nvidia we have today. The late 90s were a mess.

Basically yeah. My main issue is the physics are way, way too floaty so no impact has any weight or real feedback to player. This combined with the end of stages basically being the player and the a.i circling each other because neither can get enough speed to deliver a finishing blow really drags it down.

>>7490775
>The late 90s were a mess.
One reason directx is what it is is MS got fed up with all the apis (and the risk of them supplanting their own efforts) so the push to make directx vendor agnostic killed two birds with one stone. That said even if there was one api to rule them all in the late 90's the wildly different capabilities of the various accelerators meant it wouldn't have meant shit.

That's my biggest gripe with TM 2012. It had ALL the potential to be the best game of the series, the experience with Black and Head-On was enough to bring the brand to new heights despite being niche and yet it felt "held back" by some weird design decisions.

To this day I still feel it's a miracle they managed to pull out a masterpiece like TM 2 when the previous entry was just a 6.5 out of 10 at best.

I couldn't do it except once with Mr. Grimm where I'd snipe him with the special, turbo out, head to the health pack because if he sees you for even a fraction of a second, you eat like 15 missiles, and that was it. I think I may have done it once again with grasshopper, but at one point, I know I used a gameshark to look at all the endings, so I don't exactly recall what was legit and what wasn't except for Mr. Grimm, because of the elation tied to that. Fuck Holland. Stupid small box map with no cover anywhere, few weapons and little health. Always lost at least 1 life in that fucking level. I remember I would spend the entire game building up a stockpile of Power missiles just to help me kill people quicker once I reached Holland. It was always a race to take down everyone else before they drained my life out. Lost so many lives to getting hit by a single freeze shot and then gangbanged by 3-4 AI cars while still frozen.

Dark Tooth by comparison was simple. Run around collecting weapons, shoot DT as soon as you see him, throw up the shield and run away. Stay out of the fucking subway. Once he's down to the head, throw up the shield and move in for the kill.

Dark Tooth can be a real pain in Hard Mode.
Aside the fact it's massive but the head part is a nightmare to deal with if you're not prepared.

I've found the other bosses to be easier.
In TM 3 it was Primeveal who was just Minion with a bigger health bar.
In TM 4 it was Sweet Tooth with a stupidly powerful special attack.

I'd want it to be 'brand new.' Time to walk along the path of my autism!

Ideally, it would have a story mode, mutliplayer mode that works like it does in the older games, a newer mode called "Derby mode" that is just 32 people thrown into a giant arena littered with weapons and the last standing wins, very much like the older PS1 games, and finally a traditional racing mode ala mario kart. Add in some movement tech and the like to raise the skill ceiling and to give some depth to the combat. Give each racer special moves like the older games, but regulate the input special moves to holding a button and pressing another. Every racer would only have 4 specials and they'll differ on who you choose. This lets you differentiate from certain characters. Darkside might have a shield but Mr. Slam would have something more offensive. These aren't the pick-ups. Finally, you should be able to tune the character you choose. Raising speed for expense of armor even if the character normally wouldn't be fast or armored, up to 25% in either direction for stats. Maybe even experiment with reloading weapons, which would be a pick-up that character always gets every 30 seconds if they don't have one. E.G. Grasshopper respawns a Remote Trap every 30 seconds if they don't have on in their inventory. E.G. Spectre's is a Homing Missile. He has 2, so he doesn't get his free missile until he fires both of them and 30 seconds pass without picking one up.

The idea here is to give a traditional experience that captures exactly what you want from the older games, but give another layer for modern gamers.

I am not a game dev, and I openly admit these ideas sound good on paper but would probably flop.
