Those two things yes, nice bullseye. Both those games felt like an excellent middle ground between Classic Style and Iga style. The other handheld Igavanias are mind numbingly easy and have eye gougingly awful bright neon art style that doesn't fit Castlevania at all.

Portrait is not easy at least on hard mode and Johnathan feels like the best way to do a modernized whip user.
But on the color side you look at NES cv and Rondo/Bloodlines and see the colors are very guady. I think it fits seeing how upbeat the action and music are. Theres more gritty looking cv like 4 and chronicles but i dont think its important to their identity.
I mostly like game feel and Harmony of Dissonance is pretty unmatched there but i still heavily play the other games

I mean, CotM isn't the best, but it's not a bad challenge. It would be nicer if the card drop rate was a bit higher though. What really makes it kind of a pain to play is the double tap run. Sure, you get used to it after awhile, but it bogs down the game as a whole.

That's what most people don't get, the Igarashi CVs are not as good because the original metroidvania-style wasn't his creation, he was just a no-name kid who somehow took over after Toru Hagihara (the actual creator of Rondo and SotN) had already laid out and overseen most of the game's development. Hell, there are even design aspects from SotN that went backwards with the GBA and DSvanias, most likely since Igarashi hadn't thought of them

IGA liked it, he just said he didn't consider it canon because of the DSS system, and probably because it ignored the Belmonts. I think it may have also been pitched as a gaiden game, like the N64 titles were.

It's definitely my least favorite "Metroidvania" in the series, though. Big dealbreaker is how clunky the sprinting is, and the bosses being so damage spongey. It had some nice ideas; I think altering the whip and it's trajector/attacks was a cool concept and I appreciate that its system probably influenced Aria's souls, but it's the only GBA/DSvania I don't want to come back to.

It also has probably the best "Sinking Old Sanctuary" remix ever done. The final boss theme "Proof of Blood" is one of the best in the series too. The soundtrack is awesome and the game is allright. Not the best Igavania nor awful in any way.

I like CV1, 3, 4, Bloodlines, Rondo, DX, SotN, and all the GBA games, as well as 2, and 3 on GB.
They're all great games, some more chill, others damn hard. A good gamut of playing with a strong central theme.
I agree with you, most fans of the series are utter pillocks. I never tried the 3D or DS games so I must hold my opinions there.

Metroid, 2, Super, Fusion, Zero Mission, the Prime series, and even Samus Returns are all great IMO, as well.
