7473083 No.7473083 [Reply] [Original]

I made a thread about this game a few weeks ago saying that I wanted to like it but I couldn't. Well, since making that thread I gave this game one final try and I ended up liking it a lot. I would put it in my top 10 favorite GBA games now.

I think the biggest difference was that I took my time this time around. I didn't try to rush through the game and just cleave through mobs of enemies like in other Metroidvanias. This game is actually very comfy if you take your time. Also, I experimented more with the DSS more. Proper use of DSS makes the game much more enjoyable.

For example, the ability that gives you 4 ice balls that protectively circle around you makes large parts of the game that would otherwise be very annoying (medusa heads, poisonous bees, etc) way better. I didn't bother trying to get every single card this time around, but I did quickly look at a guide and see which enemies drop what. I ended up getting all but 4 of the cards. The cards I had were enough to get through the game without much of a problem.

I'm going through Magician mode right now and it's pretty fun spamming summons.

Anyway, I can conclusively say that this is a great game.

I'm glad you grew to like it. It's actually my favorite of the metroid style Castlevanias
Grinding cards is a bit tedious at points, but as you say I think it was designed thar way. This game ate up many long train rides and killing time between classes. It's biggest setback was how dark it is but once the SP came it it really shined.

>> No.7473128

I liked how it was much more difficult than other Igavanias, still not on par with the Classic style but enough to keep me interested. The grind for card abilities has always been overblown, wear Luck boosting equipment, look up the two cards that are needed for the boost Luck ability, grind on those two enemies, then once you have that ability unlocked it decreases the grind dramatically. The game not letting you know which enemies dropped cards was the actual mistake since the drop rates are so low without the previously mentioned strategy that players may never get any combos and have a much harder time as a result.

I would have loved hotkeys for card combos and items but this is a GBA game and it's a struggle to fit controls for this style of game on it already. Having to constantly go through menus is one of the only things I don't like about this genre and it could be mitigated entirely if they were built around a keyboard instead of a controller/handheld.

The complaints about this are the direct cause of Harmony of Dissonances vomit inducing neon flavored eye cancer art style.

You deliberately move to an area where you can't view an enemies attack and then get mad when they hit you because you can't view their attack and react accordingly?

Which is a real shame. Because HoD does look okay on the original screen but anything other than that and it's an eyesore. At least HoD isn't a great game in most other ways so it's not a huge loss.

Past the novelty of having 'handheld SotN' at GBA launch it's not very good. The emphasis on grinding just makes it all so tiresome.

I prefer classicvania but I think Igavanias were meant to be easy. Whacking enemies over and over again before they die is just too boring.

This. The platforming is so comfy. Instead of memorizing boss patterns, I would just crawl the castle and level up until fighting the boss was easy.

>Actual platforming required
>Can't just mindlessly spam attack, enemies can actually kill you unlike all other Igavanias
>Can't buy any health restoration items, enemies very rarely if ever drop them
>Only reliable way to get health back is in save rooms
>This makes gameplay very tense as you need to decide whether it's worth it to backtrack to previous save room or hope there's one coming up soon
This game fucking rules I don't care what anyone says, I'm having a blast.
>all praise for this game is classicvania fans desperately trying to salvage something of worth from the iga games
I may be guilty of this. I decided to give Igavanias a try since I really liked the more non-linear exploration aspects of Rondo. I liked SotN at the start but around the midpoint I got overpowered and the game got boring. Then the upsidedown castle happened and it was back to being fun again, if it wasn't for that I would have dropped the Igavanias entirely, it gave me hope that the next games would be better and CotM is wiping the floor with SotN so far. I'm scared it's going to suck later on, I want it to continue being this good so much. It's not as challenging as the non-Iga games but they've done a far far better job balancing the difficulty with exploration than what SotN did, maybe that's why Iga is so butthurt about CotM.

Grinding for cards, grinding for equipment for Dracula/the Arena. Even with Luck gear+Luck DSS some cards can take a long time to drop. What makes this more baffling is that Magician mode gives you all the cards off the bat, making you wonder why they bothered making the card drop rates so damn low in the first place.

>> No.7475053

>>7474934
I believe you weren't intended to grind for every card on your first play, That's why magician mode is there so you can then experiment with everything.

I think I'd rather arcade games be hard and exploration games be easy, especially if the alternative is annoying imbalances like the cross being practically mandatory for boss fights

>>7473657
I disagree with your assessment but nevertheless they'd have been better off copying Metroid 100% imo and dispensing with xp and random drops

>> No.7475157

>>7474934
I don't know why so many people keep coming to CotM thinking that their objective is collecting DSS cards. CotM is about exploration and killing dracula.

I keep seeing this on the board and you will not like CotM if you're going to focus on getting all of the cards. 90% of them are not useful enough for you to spend your time playing like this.

>> No.7475376

I played through my entire first run of this game as a dumb kid who couldn’t understand how to use the card system at all and I freaking loved it anyways. Great game. Stop bitching about the cards. Jeez.

>> No.7475789

I'm glad it grew on you, OP.

I loved this game when it came out. Still do, actually. I obviously enjoyed the later two games much more, but this game is great.

AoS>CoTM>HoD, in my opinion.

The GBA trilogy is fantastic. Each title is flawed, but all are great games nonetheless.

Also, how does one resist using the DSS glitch? I learned of it about 5 years ago and now I can't stop using it whenever I replay the game.

Ayyy, I remember that thread. It's nice to see you gave it another shot, OP, and even moreso since you enjoyed yourself this time.
>>7473740
If you enjoyed SoTN's inverted castle, I'm inclined to say to try Aria of Sorrow and the DS games, especially Portrait of Ruin and Order of Ecclesia, those two games actually try to give a challenge and even have hard modes with level caps. I like HoD, but I can't imagine you would, even if it stars a Belmont.

Don't forget the bonus character modes, SoTN and PoR both have a playable Richter mode once you clear the game.

>> No.7475970

>>7475948
Order of Ecclesia really disappointed me. It's not even that hard, most enemies are just damage sponges and outside of the bonus dungeons and drac's castle there's no even slightly challenging platforming. Maybe I was expecting too much since it got so much hype for finally not being so easy but they put the difficulty in the wrong places.
