I guess this goes in hand with my Mario Kart thread elsewhere but has broader implications.

Does blatant CPU cheating get old? Is it fake difficulty?

>Does blatant CPU cheating get old? Is it fake difficulty?
On older games no, it was necessary, on newer games there is little reason to use it.

Rubber-band AI can now substitute blatant cheating for perfect driving. In older games there weren't enough CPU cycles for this.

What does the cpu do to cheat?

I like this answer and i see where you're coming from, but i think artificial difficulty is good, in that, it forces you to become so skilled at a game you can beat cheating. I know its not its intended purpose, but its a great training mechanism.

Except that it doesnt induce you to become generally good at the game, but rather to become good at beating the AI.

In SMK AI drivers have infinite amount of items, including unique ones completely unavailable to the player. It's frustrating when you try to outrun Mario or Luigi and they just activate starman on every turn to get away.

Super Mario Kart aged like milk. I don't know why boomers still bring it up like as if it's this timeless classic. It's been hopelessly outmatched by every game since 64. Who the fuck actually wants to endure that eye straining mode 7 cancer with squished pixels sliding across?

Me. Even when 64 came out I preferred this one. N64 Fell a lot slower.

N64 is the superior game when you have more than 2 people, though.

The rubberbanding doesn't bother me but this pisses me off. Its why I always pick Mario so at least I have one less of these assholes to deal with.

The PC also can go absurdly fast back to its position if it slips on a banana or is hit by a shell. Sometimes I try to hit the 2nd place so that they will score less points and be further behind on the standings, but the fags just activate turbo mode back to 2nd in half a lap. You have to hit them almost on the finish line to get the result.

This retarded NPC tier response has really been run into the ground. Like as if it's even authentic to people growing up in the time that they would be angry about video games advancing.

"Yeah dude, don't you know? Us real gamers of the 90's were real angry when games started using real 3D graphics, when racing games were playable on anything other than a D-pad, and when shooters let us looked up. Really infuriating, only us tru 90's gamers would know."

You fucking fake faggot, nobody was going "Man I wish Mario Kart was stuck on mode 7 forever".

It barely matters in the first SMK because while the CPU can go faster to try and catch up they can't go nearly fast enough if you're driving good so the only time you wind up dealing with their infinite items is when you're lapping them

>> No.7470000

reminds me of this clone on DOS. not sure if you can call this cheating I think it's more of the lack of AI itself.

it's literally just time attack, and any attacks won't work because they'd just reposition themselves immediately.

It was a brilliant feeling to be bullied by DKJ on 150cc special cup and then red shelling him into the wall just before the finish line and 3 other characters wizz past, consuming his points. If the AI is going to cheat, I'm going to play dirty and get a perverse enjoyment out of doing so.

I remember a few people complaining MK64 wasn't as good as SMK at the time. There was understandably big excitement over 3d at the time.

I personally prefer MK64 and don't like SMK that much (but it's still a very good game for a good while). But try to understand how other people might have different opinions to you.

With some exceptions, game design generally got better along with technology, especially throughout the 90's and early 2000's. Design starting stagnating around mid 00's when the industry starting getting homogenized and aiming for universal appeal on nearly every product.

My bullshitine is if they change speed. Like they are locked at a certain max speed, and then that limit gets raised when they start losing. If they just start driving better, like taking turns better or using powerups more intelligently, that's fine. It needs to be within reason still, tho

I actually really like that part of the game. It gives each rival racer a unique personality and challenge, sort of like the different ghosts in Pac Man.

Anybody who puts SMK above SC is a nostalgiafag. SC has all of SMK's tracks, plus a campaign of all original cups, better art than the SNES game, and challenging AI with less bullshit. It's like a refinement of the SMK formula

>> No.7476157

>>7476075
I like SC more than SMK but I think SMK's tracks are better played in SMK.
Also, the art being better is questionable. The SNES driver sprites are nice for being hand-drawn instead of prerendered.

It probably comes down to taste, but I never liked the art style in SMK. The only knock I have against SC's graphics is that they were washed out to compensate for the GBA's unlit screen. Otherwise I much prefer the expanded color palette and detailed sprites of SC over the child-like primaries and thick black outlines of SMK, which I always thought was an odd choice for a racing game
