The Yu-No remake is a total butchery, few remakes manage to take out so much SOUL at once. Even the shitty Langrisser one looks better.

Call me an uncultured swine, but I'd say the remake doesn't look *that* bad, apart from that strategically placed steam cloud on #12. (With all that being said, still nothing can match the original PC-98 style. It's just pure magic.)

>> No.7464972

I downloaded the Windows port for Yu-No (+ english patch and voice files) and it came in four parts. the first three are 400mb in size and the fourth just 30mb (lacking a bunch of files). I installed part 1 by mounting the files and running the Install dot exe but if I do the same with the other files it acts as the launcher for the game as if everything is already set up. in fact the game seems to be running normally. What the hell are these other parts for? The game itself is already a little over 1gb in size.

That's just a split archive. It's not so common anymore, but back in the day when you had a slower download speed or limited external storage, it'd be common to split archives like that. Once all the parts are together in the same directory, it works just like a regular .zip/.rar or whatever.

I got your back anon, the readme was this text:

Installation Instructions
1. Mount CLASSICS.iso using Daemon Lite (DTLite.exe it's inside the folder)
2. Follow prompts and install game.
3. Classics.iso has three games packed in, only YU-NO is translated.
4. Once game is installed, run YU-NO_English_tlpatch_v1.00.exe
5. It will auto-detect your needed installation directory. Press 'Install' (make sure it picks the YUNO folder inside Classics and not Classics itself.)
6. Once installed, DRAG what is INSIDE yuno_voice_files folder into the YUNO folder inside Classics. i.e. VOICE_A, VOICE_B, VOICE_C
7. Extract the contents from the YUNO Music Pack (44 kHz Stereo Lossless).7z package into the YUNO folder.
8. run AI5ENG_VOICE.exe inside the YUNO folder.
9. Play the game.

Note:
You may need to set to 256 color compatibility mode for it to run (I know I had to)
and maybe even force it to 640x480 resolution.
Do this by right clicking on AI5ENG_VOICE.exe then properties, then go to the compatibility tab:
Windows 7: Run in 256 colors
Windows 7: Run in 640 x 480 screen resolution

You will need to be in Japanese locale to run the game correctly.
The installer may need to be run as administrator.

What bugs me is the lack of contrast in newer anime. I get that art styles evolve but the high contrast color gradation and thicker linework was part of what gave anime it's "personality." I know that those were necessities based on the limitations of standard definition TV/monitors (too much subtlety in detail would blur to shit) but it's the number 1 reason why modern anime looks like ass to me.

Textractor works fine for most stuff i've come across some javascript based newshit aside.
Just needs some minor configuration like entering boxes of only translating the current thread you're looking at instead of all the ones it finds and exchanging bing translate for google translate in a list if you get tempbanned from the service.
If you don't want to see the japanese at all and just want the translations then you need a regex something like this:
/[\x3000-\x303F]|[]|[…]|[　-〿]|[぀-ゟ]|[゠-ヿ]|[＀-￯]|[一-龯]|[★-☆]|[←-↕]|※/g;

Also been messing with this, as far as I can tell, Textractor doesn't support NP21, but does support Anex86. After installing it, you also have to install a japanese font file (I found it by
googling) for the text to display correctly. That's as far as I got last night, gonna keep plugging away at it later today. I could be naïve, but I get the sense that PC-98 auto translation is a bit more complicated than anyone in these threads makes it out to be, Windows H game are probably way easier.

There's some way to make it work with NP21. On Youtube there's a video of a guy playing Tamashii no Mon with NP21 and he manages to auto-translates. He just vaguely mentions a "special emulator version" that lets you hook-up text: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gaibHXWatok

Kinda both - translucent things tend to get darker at different depths, you can see how it gradients from the most saturated color, on top where the sunlight hits it, then dulls down in both saturation and value before ramping back up at the bottom to show the paldrons flaring out. That combined with the circular painting technique emulates the scratches on brushed or worn metal, capped off with minimal stark white highlights. The red on on the top right is a solid example.

Maybe I'm the noob, but you're not doing dithering by hand, right? I think some of these look like a Bayer Matrix. https://web.archive.org/web/20070927122512/http://www.efg2.com/Lab/Library/ImageProcessing/DHALF.TXT

>> No.7488043

>>7487698
Not the anon you replied to, but I read somewhere that a lot of the artists who made artwork for the PC-98 actually did dithering by hand.

grafx2 has a few tools for dithering. Gradients can be set to dithered gradients in the settings and the sieve tool under the FX button is quite useful.

You can get pretty alright results when converting to an indexed palette with pattern dithering (I think that's Bayer dithering) in photoshop too (called positioned dithering in gimp). Especially if you first posterize it a little and then index it to even fewer colors/shades with dithering.

Looks like there was a tablet called Mediagraph-10 by NEC for the PC-98 that at least existed as early as 1987. It's difficult to find information about it in English though.
Since Wacom is Japanese too it wouldn't surprise me if the Japanese were very early with things like this.

I'm fascinated by how easy it is to select which colors the brush should paint on just by clicking on the palette colors. I know the same thing is possible in GrafX2 with the Stencil effect but it's not as convenient and instant as in this program. It really seems tailor made for the PC-98's limited color palette with the dither patterns placed right in the toolbox too.
