>One of the best 2D platformers I've ever played.
Feel the same. No nostalgia goggles either. Played it for the first time a few years back. It even has a fun water stage. Can't say that about most platformers.

I tried a couple years back, didn't hit me hard, but I'll honestly try again, thanks OP

I am a Sonic chad but Ristar was my 2nd favorite platforming series on the Genesis. Playing through it again now, albeit slowly

>> No.7462368

Ristar is one of my favorite Mega Drive games and replayed it last night. It gets a good amount of key things right.
>perfect difficulty curve
>great swimming controls
>fun bosses
>final boss is actually the hardest part of the game
>1ups are infrequent enough for them to actually matter

I do have some nitpicks though.
>voice samples are too scratchy even for Mega Drive standards (Dynamite Headdy proved they can be better)
>2-2 could've used a little fat trimming
>the water and music mini bosses aren't very engaging
>occasionally cheap enemy placement where you have little to no time to react like those small fish underwater
>1ups in chest respawn after you die but i only noticed one area in 4-2 where you can exploit that
>a few mechanics could've used a clearer teaching element like those turret things in 6-2 and the pressure sensitive flashing tiles with the dancing guitars in 4-2
>Greedy's lightning attack needed a clearer telegraph

>> No.7462392

I remember reading an interview where one of the developers said that Ristar was designed with the concept if "feeling". That's why he grabs into stuff and shit. A lot of other classic platformers throughout mutiple generations have grabbing mechanics in on way or the other, Super Mario 2, 3 and World, DKC, the Capcom Mickey games, Klonoa, Tomba and probably some others I'm forgetting.
A lot of modern platformers are kinda lacking in "texture" because the focus too much on standard movement mechanics (how many new platformers feature either a double jump or a dash?) instead of letting you feel the world. Not only because of this, but they are often too static in general.

This is the biggest surprise for me. For such a top notch game on every other aspect it really dropped the ball on the voice samples. Comix Zone came out the same year and those samples sound clear as day.

i know this is /vr/ but imagine a modern ristar game with rayman origins style hand drawn graphics and full 360 directional arm stretches

not that there's anything wrong with the original graphics, they're beautiful, but they don't work very well with full 360 directions.

knowing sega, they probably lost the uncompressed samples so we'll never be able to fix this.
>>7462928
do you think lizardcube would be up to the task? they did the art for the wonderboy remake and streets of rage 4. i do like the idea of analog grabbing since there's potential for more precise platforming challenges. maybe if you held a bumper/trigger down you could control each hand independently with both sticks. sega considered making a sequel featuring other star people with different abilities so i'm wondering what they had in mind.

I absolute love that game. One neat detail is the second stage being the background for the first stage.

In stage 1-1 you see the forest in the background, and stage 1-2 is the forest, in stagge2-1 you see a castle and the castle is the second stage and so on.

it's very different. it has an exclusive world.
there's coin like stars to collect for lives, an invincibility powerup, a spear you can chuck at walls for platforms. play the japanese version because it has a level that was removed internationally but you can use a game genie code to activate it in the western version.

that's such a dumb argument. he has stretchy arms not wrists. if that were the case, it'd be called wristar.
