Yeah? Unless your game has a source port it's still the only way to play MechWarrior 2 on a modern machine. If you need extra features then get SVN-DAUM

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as DOS, is in fact, IBM/DOS, or as I've recently taken to calling it, IBM plus DOS. DOS is not an computing platform unto itself, but rather another commercial component of a fully functioning IBM system made useful by the BIOS, ISA bus and vital system components comprising a full computing system as defined by IBM.

Many computer users run a modified version of the IBM system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of IBM which was widely used in the 80s and 90s is often called "DOS", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the IBM system, developed by International Business Machines Corporation.

There really is a DOS, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. DOS is the disk operating system: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The disk operating system is an essential part of an computing system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete computing system. DOS is normally used in combination with the IBM computing system: the whole system
is basically IBM with DOS added, or IBM/DOS. All the so-called "DOS" emulators are really emulators of IBM/DOS.

Autodesk 3D Studio R4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Y-ymK2b-yI
I used it commercially until early 1996 when its successor 3D Studio Max R1 came out, bringing some very welcome changes like the modifier stack and a more unified workflow.

As for the old Autodesk 3D Studio, it saw wide use from 1990 to 1996.

For example, all the cutscenes and a lot of ingame graphics of C&C Tiberian Dawn were done in R4.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNQq_h8AoBA

All the graphics in Wing Commander Privateer were done in R3.

And so many other games, it's hard to count.

Molyneux's Theme Park and Hospital used it for everything. I bought my first legal version of 3DS4Dos in 1995 on budget cd-rom series.
The cracked version was rather unpredictable. After about 60-80 clicks, all verts would go bonkers and you had to reload.

Absolutely not. Since learning about PCem, I have not looked back. The biggest selling point for me is that you get to emulate the games for the CPU chipsets they were built for. No speed glitches in Space Quest IV or any of the Apogee/Epic Megagames titles.

I have an instance for a 486 DOS/Win 3.11 machine and a Pentium MMX Win98 machine.

Let me google ms dos commands for you
https://www.computerhope.com/overview.htm
Not all of these are going to work in regular dosbox dos because they use some weird version. But if you're trying to play games all you need to know is
>cd GAME
(change directory. replace game with the name of your game directory)
>GAME
type the name of your game.exe to run it!
>cd..
go back a level, if you want to be pro try cd\ to go back to root
>dir
list contents of a directory, or use dir /p to pause between each screen for long file lists

I got memed hard into PCEM. It seems fantastic at first. You have to a aquire a sort of illegal bios pack to emulate all these vintage computers, install an OS before anything works at all, but then you realize there is no way to just mount your DOS games folder inside PCEM to get some files transfered over. All workarounds are pure cancer, like create an image file and put some games in there, or inject files with some obscure alpha tools, or FTP them over.

On a real machine, you'd need to write floppies, burn a CD, or use FTP.
PCem emulates actual specific computers, rather than some mythical machine that never existed.
If you just wanna play games and don't care about dealing with the minutia of how an actual old PC works, just use DOSBox-X. Some shit will break vs on PCem, whether due to the emulated system's CPU timing, the difference between DOSBox's DOS vs real MS-DOS, and various issues with the way DOSBox handles disks, but those issues are few and far between.

PCem is still really god damn easy though. Like, really, really easy.
The utility DiskExplorer (look up editdisk) can mount PCem's default image format easily (select "vmware plain disk" when it asks what), so getting shit in isn't hard.
If the software is distributed as floppies or a CD image, I can just mount that directly with no problem.

Yeah, currently running the SC55 soundfont. Works perfectly, although Windows10 updates regularly fuck with the midi mapper and some inner workings of VirtualMIDISynth.
