I played the original first, so maybe I'm biased but I like it more. It looks more uncanny like a mask, while the right just looks like the face of a generic enemy.

i feel like the scariest combo would be the eyes of the right, and the nose/mouth of the left. something about the nose/mouth of the right (while clearly a more "AHHHH!!!! IM GONNA GET YOU!!!!" expression) seems more clowny and laughable. and while the one on the left has a less "deliberate" expression, i feel like that makes it more unsettling; just the fact its creepy looking and just... IS there...

That's just the standard zeitgeistification that only really triggers people deluded into the SOUL meme. The real shit that made that remake worthless was the pointless gameplay tweaks, specially everything regarding the time cycle/saving system and the Bomber notebook.

I think a lot of older games did horror a lot better through their use of the uncanny valley with their scary subject matter. Like the brain isn't supposed to build a nose from the weird razor angles on the original so it looks a lot creepier. The right looks more human so it's not as scary but it is an impressive 3D model.

That's why I wonder about the direction a lot of retro horror is going in with the low poly games coming out now from indies.

Reminder that a modder fixed most of the gameplay issues with MM3D but did a terrible job at advertising his work.
I still prefer the N64 original, but it's a pretty good mod.
