I grew up playing this game and have fond memories of it, but I have to be in a very specific mood to play it. It deserves its place in history and was absolutely groundbreaking, but I don't think anyone coming to it today having never played it before would appreciate it as anything other than a novelty or a curiosity.

I grew up with it (and RTCW), and I still love both, but I understand why most people can't go back to it. Personally, I love hitscan enemies and have a good photographic memory, so I honestly still enjoy the game very much. Still have my old floppy disk for the first episode, and the retail CD release for all 6 episodes.

I didn't get to play Doom, Quake, and the Build Engine games until I was an adult, but Wolfenstein 3D is what made me fall in love with the FPS genre. That chaingun sound effect is the epitome of class.

I read about 4-6 being an expansion pack, and the order screen said you could buy each trilogy separately. But I've never seen a version of Wolf3d that only has episodes 1-3. I looked up the 1.0 shareware on youtube and the episode screen shows 6 episodes.

Been playing through it recently, it's a lot of fun. It has a very tense atmosphere that you really don't get with Doom. Even the weakest grunts can fucking end you if they're close, since bullets do more damage the closer you are. There were some really cool things people did with modding the game too.
