What's the best DarkStalkers for someone who wants to get into the series?
Preferably PS1

There's only 2 games, just play both

The lack of a PS1 Nightwarriors is a mindscrew. Even more of a mindscrew is no Darkstalkers 1 on the Saturn and Nightwarriors getting a home port before Darkstalkers 1 did.

2 and 3
1 can be hard for newcomers and capcom has written 1 out of the DS canon, everything starts at 2, my favorite is 3, really fun last boss.

Back in the day i was desperately waiting for that. Then they announced vampire hunter instead. Which came out feb/96. Its funny that the PSX game actually came out one month after?

Never play arcade ports on PSX. They cut like 50% of the animation frames out due to limitations. Just emulate the arcade versions. And make sure you play them in 4:3, since despite their native aspect ratio being widescreen, they were meant to be displayed on crt's with a 4:3 ratio.

Yeah this. PSX was shit at any of these Capcom ports because it didn't have enough RAM to store all the sprite animations. I use Retro Arch with the MAME 2003-Plus core to play the arcade games (pic related). While 2 and 3 are better, it's still worth getting the original game because it's still good. Saturn also has a very decent port of the 2nd game and it keeps most animations, and Vampire Savior is a great Saturn port and practically has all animations, so Saturn is a good alternative.

Btw there's also Vampire Hunter "2" and Vampire Savior "2", which are basically updates/remixes of those games. I prefer the originals though.

The Dreamcast/PSP version is a mess, none of the modes are accurate to the games they represent and a bunch of content is missing.

Assuming you just want to play single player if you're asking about ps1 but even then just emulate the original as it's far better. The ps1 ports for capcom fighting games are infamously bad, the Vs. games had to remove the tag team mechanics just to work on the system.
