The game has the best setting out of any Mario game and the controls are very responsive, but it's clearly finished and rushed, which is very weird for a mainline Mario game. Stuff like the watermelon mission is the kind of shit you'd see in bargain bin poorly made games.

I was okay with the quantity of blue coins, just the lack of anything saying: "Oh you've collect 10/15 blue coins for this mission" was a killer.
Also the stupid saving text pop-up after each coin collected was annoying.

Except the level design philosophy in SMB1 and Sunshine is nothing alike (aside from the secret FLUDD-less stages, which are the only good parts of the game in my opinion).

Also, "collectathon" just means a non-linear 3D scotformer that involves searching for the next thing(s) to obtain and complete the objective.

I've thought it was bad ever since I was a kid. Didn't like it then, didn't like it in my young adulthood, didn't like in college, don't like it now. I've only gotten 20 shines or so before I turn it off and do something better.

I played it recently to test this out for myself. Conclusion? You're wrong, and still my favorite 3D Mario game. Odyssey comes close though.

>> No.7449409

I played through it for the first time a few months ago. I'm okay with the water mechanics. They're not good or anything, but not really bad either. My biggest complaint is that too much time is spent running around with close to zero indication where to go. There are a bunch of points where it expects you to do something ultra-specific that you're supposed to just know.

>you have a water system on your back
>enflamed chomps are setting the ground on fire everywhere they go
>obviously you're supposed to drag them into the lake with the grab mechanic you've never seen before that no-one mentions

Blue coins are complete bullshit. The Spyro series had a guidebook that gave clues for the big items and the dragonfly for small things which would have been welcome here. I felt like I could have spent another week hunting for blue coins for 100% completion but it felt like a huge waste of time so I didn't bother. The fact that some of them only show up with certain shines selected was also painful.

I get that some people will love it but it's pretty inaccessible for a casual larping as a tryhard like me.

>> No.7449496

>>7449084
The “flags” in SMB1 literally just signified the end of the level. You weren’t collecting them. The shines in SMS are all scattered throughout the same levels at various points. It’s clearly not the same thing to anyone who isn’t severely deluded.

Sunshine has been the target of derision since it came out.

>> No.7452496

>>7448594
It's more complex than that. The movement and physics are a step up from 64 (except for that lack of a long jump!). The environments are very nice, and they never feel bland despite the entire game being in a tropical setting. They did a great job in how they handled having both abstract (secret levels) and, for lack of a better term, "realistic" levels. The mission structure is awful and a massive step down from 64, though.

>> No.7452518

>>7448594
The movement feels better than mario 64 to me, but fludd was lame and should've been replaced with normal beach themed powerups. Building the entire game around it made the whole thing feel like a single note gimmick.
It's fun, but could've been a lot better.
Also the cutscenes trash and should be done away with in mario games (odyssey has this problem too) and the story is shit.

It's fun when it's a puzzle though. I had a great time (as an adult) playing through DKC2 for the first time and hunting down all the cleverly hidden secret golden thingies. But just having collectibles scattered around EVERYWHERE, with most of them not being interestingly hidden, is just a way to add more time to the game. It's like grinding in a JRPG - I somehow enjoyed that as a kid, but now I just find it tedious.

Yup same sentiment here. I just played through the story of Shadow of The Tomb Raider on PS4. I enjoyed it, but the only urge I have to run it again comes from the tombs I haven't beaten yet. Once I do that I'll probably delete it off my hard drive. I have no desire to run around the map picking up hundreds of random artifacts.
