It was shaped completely differently from the Japanese controller, and then outright replaced with the Japanese controller design later on. I don't dislike the feel of it, but why did it ever exist?

Underrated. The shoulder buttons are a bit weird but its a great controller.

I remember the early "personality" of the Saturn in the US, both the advertisements and media, and it seemed like they were really trying to lean hard into the futuristic space tech angle. And this version of the controller seems to vibe with that. I guess they thought the Japanese design wasn't futuristic enough.

It does. It's almost like someone glued some awkward blocky grip to a normal controller.

Probably wanted to differentiate further from the PS controller, which some at Sega probably the Jap Saturn one looked a little similar to.

I remember reading an article where Microsoft stated that in multiple test groups before launch, the fat Xbox controller was always rated high marks on its comfort and feel. It beat out 5 other prototypes including one similar to the S design.

Yet it was slammed during launch as worst controller ever. It actually surprised them.

>> No.7444168

>>7443702
Its actually not uncomfortable. I think its just not well known because they changed to the Japanese pad with the revision so only the early adopters experienced this version. So that's like 12 people.

>> No.7444180

>>7444023
Because people were judging it without trying it. Its bad reputation was entirely an internet meme. The d-pad was worse than the S but the S revision, which was supposedly universally better, fucked up the black and white button placement.

I don't care if it's missing three more buttons, the feel of this controller was GOAT and so much more satisfying than the later versions

Dpad aside, it's actually a really good controller. Besides which, Microsoft already has an established history of making quality controllers. The Sidewinder lineup gave Gravis a run for their money.

I have manlet hands and I always preferred bigger controllers, especially the duke, even as a kid. The location of the b/w and start/select was stupid though.

Despite the weird look, its actually not bad. The only shitty part is the stiff shoulder buttons.
Of course "not bad" pales in comparison to the original saturn controller, which is the best controller ever designed for 2D games

People say this but I find the top row of buttons a lot more uncomfortable than they should be. I much prefer the shape and feel of the SNES buttons, for example, than the tiny bumps that are the Saturn X, Y, and Z. In fact, the early US version might actually be ever so slightly better at this.

>> No.7447709

>>7443875
I'm still mad that this button layout wasn't copied to the S controller. They made the black/white buttons fucking worthless as input controls. Great fucking job moving them to the middle of nowhere, forever relegated to minor menu functions, when you could have been doing any six-button ports actual justice instead. What a fuckup.

>> No.7447717

It still maintains too, I just recently bought an xbox one controller for the first time (revision 3, the bluetooth model) and it works really nicely for a lot of different things. Helps that there are also adapters to use it for all kinds of things you wouldn't normally, or that it's "standard" for several platforms.

I think this and the US saturn and the US xbox all boil down to the same thing; Americans are bigger than Japanese. This is known and observed; Japanese are aware that they are the smallest of the major SEA populations (besides hyper manlets like the vietnamese or cambodians). Americans just want a bigger grip, and sometimes that works and sometimes it really doesn't. The worst is when they revise the pad and don't have a big version with the upgrades. I love the genny 3-button but you can't play certain games well with it. That's why I mostly play on a nomad these days, that is a comfortable fucking brick.

Ehhh...

I remember the days when the goal for PC pads was to find whatever was least bad. Even Gravis was only adequate thanks to the shitty SNES and PS1 imitations.
