>90% complete
>"I was actually the lead software engineer for this game. From what I can remember, we were about 90% finished with this game before Shigeru Miyamoto requested us to make it into a Star Fox game. The sudden change was not really accepted willing by the team. Our relationship with Nintendo was a strong one with trust and respect. I'am proud that I worked on Adventures and we pushed the Gamecube's hardware to it's limits. I still feel bitter sweet that Star Fox Adventures got released instead of Dinosaur Planet. We were all so attached to the original project. Also it's a shame we got bought out by Microsoft. The Rare that I worked for in the 90's doesn't exist anymore and the new Rare is a highly evolved form of Rare. I left the company in 2010 after my last game Kinect Sports." - Phil Tossell https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOVBRJToVDY&feature=youtu.be

Nintendo does have massive archives of their old stuff though, that's where the gigaleaks came from.
Capcom has decent archives too, as evidenced by the leaks a while back having even PS1 game sources. I'd say MML3 being somewhere on their server has decent chances.
A lot of european leaks are from devs themselves finding old floppy discs or hard drives they had for either working from home or otherwise ending up with their old workstations when companies folded.

We have a 2002 prototype disc for Star Fox Adventures that has over an hour of DP voice acting and stuff like that. https://tcrf.net/Proto:Star_Fox_Adventures/July_2002_Demo/Dinosaur_Planet_Leftovers If we're lucky, we might have access to voice acting where the names match. It's actually fairly simple to replace MP3 audio in Rare's games, so there's potentially some room for rom hackers to work their magic here.

"nintendo" don't keep much of anything. this is why they've been caught out releasing old games for their in-house emulators that have been dumped by pirates and uploaded to public websites. the only people that end up having copies of unreleased games made by licensees were actual employees of whatever software company or employees took their work home with them and made a backup.

Supposedly, the game was 90% complete before the retool. This seems to be a transitionary build, where they swapped out Sabre for Fox, but before they started heavily changing the game into Star Fox Adventures.
So, somewhere around 90% is a possible estimate.

You have no idea what you're talking about. They keep literally everything, the only reason the Mana trilogy collection for Switch exists is because Nintendo still had the source code for the games and SE lost them. They've gone on record saying as much and that's why it's Switch exclusive.

Rare didn't "got the fuck out". I don't know if you're a revisionist or just don't know what went down.
Nintendo owned 49% of the company after the success of the first Donkey Kong Country and the Stamper bros sold the other 49% to Microsoft once they entered the console market with their Xbox. The Stamper bros. plan was that Nintendo/Hiroshi Yamauchi would get extra defensive of Rare after how they kept the N64 afloat, and would get to sell the last 2% the Stamper Bros. owned to Nintendo at a very inflated price just so Nintendo could become majority shareholder and keep rare and the bros make a tidy profit.

They did NOT expect Nintendo to sell their 49% directly to Microsoft (efectively making Microsoft own 98% of Rare) and use the money they got from Microsoft to buy an unknown former Acclaim studio in Texas, who would go on to develop the Metroid Prime trilogy.

Money they never saw. Yamauchi was also an extremely ruthless and spiteful businessman as well, it could be that he saw through the Stamper brothers' plan and sold directly to Microsoft purely out of spite. Honestly, it's a depressing shame, sometimes I wonder how the GameCube and Wii eras would've gone by had Rare stuck around.

I should also mention that the issue is a bit more complex, having thought it over. While Miyamoto wanted Dinosaur Planet to be a Star Fox game, it's unclear if he would've just been satisfied with Sabre swapped out for Fox. It's a bit like the Paper Mario Sticker Star debacle: Miyamoto is at fault in that he instigated the changes, but the actual changes (no EXP, consumable stickers, etc) outside of no OCs and threadbare story was largely Tanabe's ideas (and even then, he kinda agreed with the story aspect).
For what it's worth, this retrospective claims that Nintendo didn't really interfere after the re-brand, though incorporating the Star Fox stuff no doubt wrought havoc on the development.

It should also be noted that by "just" owning 49% of Rare, slightly less than half, was what gave Rare the leeway to remain "self-operated" with their ideas and production, with the only caviat being that they could only develop for the N64. That's why, when Conker was revamped into a raunchy game, Nintendo couldn't do anything to stop it.
When Microsoft became owner of 98% of Rare, they effectively became Rare's bitches.
That's why Rare is dead. It died a long, painful death. And no matter what /v/ say about muh c of deefs, there is no "Rare redemption arc". All the old staff, or the vast majority of it, rather, left already.

>>7443279
He was already CEO when Rare left but the deal was done during the twilight of Yamauchi's reign. Basically it was all signed and dated and that's why SFA is so gutted compared to the original concept (the removal of Krystal's entire part of the story, for example) was so the game could be crunched and completed before the "moving out" deadline. If that deadline hadn't been there, SFA would've been closer to DP, barring the obvious inclusion of Fox McCloud. And by closer, I mean all of Krystal's story and gameplay segments, and the originally planned final boss.

They didn't. Frank Cifaldi is a fucking moron who thought that because Nintendo used a iNES header in their early emulation efforts they were downloading their own ROMs from the internet. What really happened was that had hired a iNES contributor (Tomohiro Kawase) to lead their internal emulation projects and he decided to use the iNES header format, likely due to familiarity and ease. It's also proven by the gigaleaks that Nintendo has compete retail ROM libraries based on the master/gold game builds.

Super Famicom games kept coming out in 1998 and I think even 2000 through their Nintendo Power flash cart system, I think?

Meanwhile the west ditches consoles as soon as the shiny new toy comes out. I still can't wrap around my head how quickly people just fucking ditched the PS4 because of PS5, a console whose games look pretty much identical, is out. It's both gay and generic and doesn't evoke some mystery. I hear "Final Fantasy" or "Perfect Dark" and I go "what does that mean?". There's some interest just from the name. Dinosaur Planet is just so on the nose and generic I imagine something very bland.

Jet Force Gemini? Cool title. It evokes speed and heroes. I always felt this was the odd-man out so to speak. They should have given the JFG name to another project. Have Perfect Dark just be about fighting Datadyne, and JFG be a first person game fighting aliens. Or give it to the Dinosaur planet title.

Dinosaur Planet is some name for some PS2 or Wii shovelware not a new dynamic IP. Nintendo was right to have misgivings about the title and tried to salvage it by linking it to Star Fox. This is marketing 101.

Yeah and ZSNES works just fine if you want to play Super Mario World. Doesn't make it any less shit, and it doesn't change the fact that the last 10 years of Nintendo 64 emulation has been spent trying to catch Mupen64 up to and surpass PJ64 because of how shit it was becoming, and how it even had major regressions between major version releases. I remember when you needed 1.6, 1.7, and 2.1 because there wasn't one major good version. I also remember when the installer came bundled with malware. I also remember the devs charging for the latest versions before patreon was a thing and the paid version was noticeably worse than the free version available. I also remember it causing blue screens on Windows 10. I also remember the Ocarina of Time Randomizer saying outright in the FAQ to not use PJ64 and that no support is offered for it because of how frequently it crashes.

The game was 90% complete before Miyamoto wanted it to become a Star Fox game. Are you retarded? You're ignoring WHAT was the issues in development were. They had to teach the whole team how to work in a 3D environment. It was the prototyping phase of Mother 6e, before they even had a story down, when they struggled the most. This is not unlike any other game in that era.

By the time the story was formulated and development gained steam, they got nearly half the game done. What killed the project at the end was purely time and space related. The impending release of the GC and the knowledge that releasing a late N64 game would make it seem mediocre, when it was intended as a contemporary of FFVII. Plenty of teams struggled in that era, like the Xenogears team or even OOT's development team.

Despite this, it is still inherently better than a shit GBA game. The GBA version is gutted and related by shitty EB fans that need their meme graphics. Again, kill yourself and actually read the interviews you faggot. Mother 64 looked infinitely better than the meme we got.

Hard to appraise DP because most of its inaccessible, but it's just really unlikely they could have made the game worse by porting it to much stronger hardware and continuing to work on it. At worst it's a scaled back SFA, at best it'll have alternate content that was cut.

This. The story/game we know know Mother 3 only materialized when 75% of the time to make it was alloted was up. When they actually had the means to make the game (and a vision to work towards, as Itoi had been making shit up on the spot), their time was nearly up. They had spent most of early development fucking around.

Another case where they suddenly ran of out time/money when they had gained steam. Much like Mother 3, Xenogears was comprised of a team of people who had never made a 3D game before. Takahashi recently talked about this, saying they had to spend a lot of the time that should have been used for the game to teach the employees how to program. They did gain steam and make something great, but they didn't have the time they needed.

I personally love disk 2. It gives me EVA vibes. The story gets batshit crazy, and the strange shift in storytelling style makes it feel really fucked up. Thing is, I came in expecting this and I understand people who played it at release would have been outraged. I also like the pacing. I'm glad I don't have to go through many more big dick Xenogears dungeons.

What, the phantom version you're fellating from the near-end of development? No. After the switch from disk to cartridge, it went from twelve chapters planned to around nine. That's not really far off from the final GBA's eight. In fact, it's been theorized that Chapter 7 was originally multiple chapters, inflating the number. Yeah, some of the cinematic angles like seeing Osohe Castle looming in the distance looked neat, but even when the game was previewed I took issue with how the EarthBound 64 art style looked nothing like a Mother game, and it frankly isn't as timeless. If a late cartridge build ever gets leaked, I guarantee you'd be disappointed by just how much of it was already lost to the Disk Drive's empty promises.

I really don't blame Rare for "maturing" Krystal up the way they did. They probably saw which way the wind was blowing and realized there was already a growing fascination with her in the early days, so they thought to themselves, "do we keep this pedobait character as-is or do we age this character up?" In the end I think they made the right call, the N64 Krystal fan community was prepping to look far more cringey than the GCN one turned out to be. Also, I have a hunch Dinosaur Planet was going to be converted to GameCube regardless and the character designs were always going to take advantage of that, so N64 Krystal was most likely always going to be replaced by GCN Krystal in the end, too bad we never got a GCN version of Sabre.
