Is load/save state cheating?

>> No.7442638

Yes. This discussion shouldn't be had anymore at all.

>> No.7442651

>>7442637
Outside of saving your position so you can come right back to it later (pretend you left your console on), yes it's cheating. You're giving yourself an unfair advantage.

However, stop making this fucking thread. No one here is going to know that you cheated. All I ask is that you stay out of discussions where people are talking about how hard or tedious something is.

Yes but playing games like Abe's Odyssey without it will give you PTSD

>> No.7442718

It depends entirely on the circumstances. Doing it to get over that fucking jump in 7-1 on Revenge of Shinobi for example? Yes, it's cheating. Doing it because you can't be fucked writing down a password and it's just a time saver for when you inevitably fuck up and need to restart the level? That's cool, keep at it.

Quick saving was the norm in most retro PC games so why don't console games have it?

>> No.7442765

Consoles were incapable of it so it's pushed as "it's a feature" and "it's cheating". Save states are okay... Save scumming isn't that okay. It means you aren't enjoying the game and should just stop playing. Watch a let play or play a better game.

>> No.7442767

Yes, but I personally like using save states to replay boss fights or sections of games that otherwise can't be returned to.

>> No.7442770

>>7442651
This is why the discussion lives on, anon. There are people who DO consider it still beating the game after they used save states on bosses etc. And they would say you're gatekeeping.
The way i see it is, go ahead and lie to yourself and others about your accomplishments but it makes you a piece of shit, especially when it comes to friends or family.

>> No.7442775

>>7442718
I would argue that the reason those old passwords are so long/annoying is part of the punishment for losing, and you are avoiding it.

>> No.7442778

>>7442637
It depends how you use it.
Most pre-64 bit games were brutally unfair, in that dying too many times would send you back all the way to the VERY BEGINNING. Sure, there are *sometimes* passwords, but at that point, you can just select any level you want and skip the whole game, so it's pointless.
There's also those games which do have infinite continues, but that need to be completed in one sitting, cuz there's no password. It's fine if you're an expert already, but if you're new, you don't have time to beat Castlevania all in one sitting.
These games deserve to be save stated at the beginning of levels. That's perfectly fine.
Save stating in the middle of levels though, that's cringe.
Yes I'm a zoomer btw

>> No.7442779

no cuz its faster than using virtual memory card to save/load your game. and my silent hill for some reason refusing to detect memcard 1

it's also faster than typing passwords manually

Not filtered it's a great game, but the dying/respawning animation is just too long, the more you die the more you will see it.
Reloading the checkpoint isn't even cheating, it's just saving time.

Dumbest take I've ever heard on this. Is losing your extra lives when you use a password an intentional punishment for not completing the game in one sitting?

The absolute truth about cheating(yes including savestates), is that, if you beat a game without cheats, it was and still is an accomplishment. Its not necessarily bad to use cheats, its just not using cheats is a merit you dont get to claim... And if that upsets you, then you might want to think why that is.

It's not only cheating, but it also irreversibly damages your brain. I cannot function or hold a job because of how I abused save states in my teen years. I fall into repetitive patterns and grind at things to the point of torture, failing to grasp the wholeness of any task. I have been living on disability and they're ready to throw me into a psychiatric unit, all because of FUCKING SAVESTATES T_T

It would have been better to do METH than to abuse savestates, I wish I had known that when I started.

This is completely true. Games with shorter passwords tend to just put you right back in the level with nothing changed, while longer passwords like Metroid or Castlevania 2 keeps track of your powerups, areas opened, bosses killed, etc.
Zombies Ate My Neighbors only has 4-character passwords, but because of that it doesn't keep track of your items at all. Later in the game it's the equivalent of teleporting a 5 year old kid into the middle of a middle-eastern battlefield.
