What i still find ridiculous is Scud Race came out in 1996. PC had just got Quake a few months earlier that same year, the most technically and graphically impressive game so far, but then it suddenly looked like absolute shit compared to Scud Race. SR was literally the best looking game on the planet when it appeared, by a mile. Nothing could touch the Model 3 hardware. When i first see SR in early 97 in a London arcade it was like looking in to the future. The only other game that has even come close to feeling like that is when i played Crysis in 2007 on my then very high-end PC (which still only managed 20fps).

Now that long time has passed, what is your verdict on NFS Carbon? Many people found it underwhelming compared to the last 2 games because it was way shorter, didn't have as much of distinct identity, the story was silly but not as charming and extremely predictable, the crew and territory mechanic wasn't fully realized and the cop chases were a mere afterthought but overall I still liked it 15 years ago and still like it now, because it was one of my favorite childhood games and I played MW only years later. For many people it's the last good game in the series along with Shift and Hot Pursuit.

The handheld ports are also very good although the original story is really dumb.

I think it’s a huge step down from MW and has too many weird mechanics. In terms of the more modern nfs games i loved hot pursuit and surprisingly heat isn’t a bad game. HP2 though is still the peak of the series imo.

I've felt this way since the sixth generation ended. I didn't see the point of getting a PS3 at the time of release and when I finally decided to get one years later because of GTA V, I never had any sort of compulsion to play it because there just wasn't anything worthwhile for it, not even the new GTAs.

DC was likely as powerful as earlier Model 3 boards, but the Model 3 received upgrades over it's life span (higher clocks and more RAM). DC couldn't have matched the later upgraded boards. But one great example of the DC being on par (or better) than the early Model 3 hardware is Dead or Alive 2. Compared to Model 3 fighters like Virtua Fighter 3 or Fighting Vipers 2, DoA2 on DC has considerably higher polygon counts on the characters and considerably larger/more complex arenas. It's definitely pushing more triangles and makes both model 3 fighters look a bit shit in comparison.

Being as Scud Race ran on a early Model 3 board i'm sure DC could have handled it, but Sega had limited resources and possibly didn't want to port a lesser known name. Sega's resources were so low at this point that they ported Sega Rally 2 using the DC's awful Windows CE mode, which made the PC port far easier/quicker and cheaper, but severely gimps the DC's performance. It's why SR2's frame rate is cut in half even with the graphics downgrade and why i REALLY recommend playing the superior Model 3 game over the DC port. If anyone's interested i can explain how to setup the Supermodel emulator (Model 3).

Carbon was OK
But this is coming from someone who hated NFSU2 and NFSMW
underground 2 was more focused on ricing your car and stupid dvd covers
and most wanted was just
do a race and then spend the next 4 hours in a police pursuit to get bounty
Carbon had less of that but it was still to easy and boring for me

Usually when talking about software porting one must have to take into consideration that a code is made to fit one particular hardware in first place.

Similar to - but not extreme as - emulation, the hardware target to receive the port must be considerably powerful enough to handle the shortcuts developers usually take. Alternatively they can take the long road and rewrite the code almost entirely to fit the hardware it`s being port on, for a way better result.

This pretty much explains why Dreamcast struggled to run ported Model 3 games and yet handled Dead Or Alive 2 Naomi ports flawlessly.

I think it's great, anon. Yeah, tuning was downgraded much since U2, but edgy 2000s vibe and overall presentation just sell the game to me. Also cops were a nice addition to the formula. Carbon threw away almost everything that made MW a good game and became shallow as hell.

Here's the latest Supermodel version with a good frontend (Sega Model 3 UI):

https://www.sendspace.com/file/zlizc7

For basic setup: Just put all the game ROMs in the 'ROMs' folder, then start Sega Model 3 UI.exe, click on 'Folder' in the bottom left and locate the ROMs folder. Also make sure 'VSync' is always enabled or games run too fast. Some games need the 'PowerPCFrequency' setting adjusted, but 100mhz works fine for 95% of games.

I don't know if this board allows ROM links? Otherwise i'd upload the entire Model 3 set.
