I may not know Japanese, but I at least know a little bit. What pisses me off is that right after that typo appears a box with "Stage 3-2". Did they really make that box and didn't notice the typo?

Things like that makes me get mad at zari-gani, since she and her ego kicked off the Last Continue guy.

Informal summary of last thread:

Blaster Master was great. LC is working on subbing it right now.

SA is reportedly subbing Mendel Palace and some unknown stuff from Season 15.

Tons of people now want Arino to play Lost Vikings. An official request has been sent. Only the Super Famicom version was translated into Japanese, so that's what he would play. We don't want to muck things up by spamming them, so let our official runespeakers handle the requests.

I have yet to see a single episode without some sort of error, although some are worse than others. There's one where it refers to Arino as 38 years old, but the subtitle says 36 (or vice versa). >I pratically only know the numbers and some words like abunai.
Numbers and exclamations are definitely the easiest things to pick up just by watching and listening. Numbers only get a little strange after 10,000, as the Japanese system goes by 10,000s (man/oku/cho) instead of 1,000s (thousand/million/billion/trillion). That's about the limit of my knowledge.

I don't know if it's a reference to anything in particular, but it's certainly a standard Japanese surname, just as Saburou is a standard Japanese (male) forename. 探偵神宮寺三郎 is read Tantei (探偵) Jinguuji (神宮寺) Saburou (三郎), where tantei = detective.

It just looks like a normal name to me, much like Jake Hunter is in English (though I guess 'hunter' might be considered somewhat appropriate for a detective). I'd ask a native Japanese speaker what kind of connotations 神宮寺 has as a name and which series it may be referencing if any.

When they mentioned Arino was a 'gamer', they're not talking about the kind of basement-dwelling nintenyearold you're accustomed to associating it with.

Arino sucks at a lot of these games because he is an arcade gamer, not a console gamer. Give him an arcade cabinet to sit at and he's above average- set him down with a famicom controller and he's pretty 'eh' because he's not used to playing these sort of games as much.

We know he had a Playstation when he was younger, but aside from that?

Two subtitle mistakes I caught in the "Kacho in USA special"

- When he's playing Street Fighter in the arcade the narrator says "After a vigorous battle", but it's gets translated as "After some observation", probably because the word "kento" when pronounced can mean either observation (検討) or vigorous battle (健闘)

- When Arino's going to the event at the end, the subtitle say "On top of that, it's a holiday" when in fact the narrator says "On top of that, it's a weekday". That one is just sloppy.

I need to stick to the rules. I can’t post any direct links to content licensed for sale in the United States. The raw episodes and the various fansubs aren’t licensed for sale outside of Japan, so I’m fine with posting those.

I know that some people are going to download the RGM DVD content no matter what anybody says, but anyone intending to do so should have the knowledge and motivation to use basic search functions within the links provided here and within the archive.

I want to stay neutral on this subject. As OP, expressing any strong opinion has the potential to alienate substantial groups of people. I’m trying not to be controversial or divisive. Hopefully, most people will understand that I’m posting as much as I can within the rules.

Unfortunately, there really isn't much official merchandise that is easily available. The official site doesn't really have anything interesting and they're all sold out anyways (http://eshop.fujitv.co.jp/product/category/B002029-1.html)), although that might change in the future. Japanese DVD sets are expensive and like the RGM DVD set don't have the Tamage segments (no subs, too). It's likely that a lot of goods are GCCX event exclusives but that's probably out of reach for most of us.

If you want to get your hands on GCCX merch, it looks like the RGM DVD set and DS game are your only options. You can also try the second DS game, which is Japanese only, but region free (text heavy, but I think there's a patch being worked on).

Wikipedia has the airing order of some of the specials, but it also spoils all of the challenge results in the righthand column. Ray's guide has some more specifics on when many of them aired.

http://www.crunkgames.com/?p=87

I also believe that the new Kindle book has the original air dates for everything. It's a bit sloppy with the editing overall, but it has a lot of info.

1 - Gay marriage isn't legal in Japan.

2 - You CAN have a gay wedding at Disneyland, etc, but it's just a ceremony and not legally recognized.

3 - When Kibe announced he got married he used the verb nyuuseki(入籍), which refers to one of the partners in a marriage leaving their family and entering their partner's.

4 - He may not be willing to discuss his marriage because his wife might be shy. The staff's family events (Toujima's wedding, Nagashima having a daughter, etc) get mentioned a lot, sometimes even using pictures, and she might not want that.

Its interesting to think how FPSes would be if the Japanese got around to them first. I'm guessing with how popular games like Arcus, Death Bringer, Black Onyx, Wibarm, Wizardry and Ultima (all first person dungeon crawlers) were over in Japan in the late 80's, FPSes developed by them would often have some sort of medieval theme, or scifi. They do love their wolfenstein and cawadooty these days, though.

Also, are you a bad enough dude to play episodou ichi no Urutameto Doomu wa HAATO MI PURENTI MOUDOU?

I can understand those fears, but actively trying to prevent popularity is a nonsensical solution to that. The backlash against the dubbed version of Retro Game Master should be enough to let the producers know that any future American releases should be subtitled only. It's difficult to say because it depends on how many chances you have to use Japanese, and how much you study. If you drill everyday but don't use it (speaking, reading books watching TV/movies), it will take a lot longer to gain fluency.

I knew basic conversation and about 100 kanji when I came to Japan in 2006, but studied a ton everyday, tried my best to talk with people, went to movies, etc and I got my N1 in 2012 (probably would have gotten it earlier but the 2011 earthquake cost me a lot of studying time)

tl;dr The more Japanese you're exposed in as many forms as possible, the faster you'll pick it up.

Like >>744640 and >>744714 said, they should mostly be there. If you use the SA Forum episode list for reference, just keep in mind that they don't even mention LC subs because of their stupid rivalry/grudge.

Are you sure you're not confusing GCCX with Gaki no Tsukai? I remember some anon mentioning in an earlier thread that Matsumoto is getting tired with GnT.

I'm rewatching the USA special and I forgot how "American" they managed to make it, if that makes any sense.

Didn't he play against a Japanese-American guy named Joshua?

I always wonder what Japanese people think when they meet a non-Japanese-born Japanese person, talking like a Texan and having a name like Frank or Jim-Bob. Maybe they don't overthink it like I do.

They think they have a big dick.

Of course it doesn't help that my knowledge of this is from a black guy.

Hearing Born in the USA during the bumpers made me laugh out loud. It was silly but I think it worked.

I don't think so.

No way they could clear that for a US DVD release.

Did you go the english teacher route? I have more questions but I don't wanna derail the thread. Could we continue this conversation in private?

I wouldn't worry about it. We're near 500 posts, and OP mentioned a week or two ago that he checks in by around noon eastern to see if a new thread needs starting.

ah, maybe, looking at the wiki page for the show I can see why he would be, it seems like the show is resorting more and more to gross out humor, which is always a sign that they are running our of ideas

He looked a bit Asian to me, but so did the owner. It was the owner who spoke Japanese, right?

That picture's from the C64 version. The NES version was Japan only.

Yep, 5 years on JET, on my second year with an English cram school, looking to go corporate. If you apply for an English teaching job, go to as rural a place as you can, it really boosts your ability (out of necessity)

gotta give him credit, he sticks by dhalsim and is actually getting a little better at him as time goes by...at least as far as 111..which is where i am in my marathon of the episodes.

Yeah. Unfortunately, Arino's skill at fighting games makes his skill at shooting games look like he's fucking Takahashi Meijin.

He can sometimes pull off some fighting wins, like when he played Nakayama at Tekken? in some arcade. That can happen sometimes though. A skillful player can drop a match to an unpredictable scrub.

Yeah I think it was Tekken 6. Right after that loss, Nakayama tore right through the AI to the end of the game.

that's from the USA special right? from reading parts of this thread and seeing them, some of the specials aren't assigned an episode number, and of all of them I'd like to NOT get the USA one out of order. does anyone know where it Should be?

also, even though there's alot Arino seems to do for the show, how much of the Chief would you say is just him as himself in a costume?

The USA special comes right after Pac-Man 2 in season 15.

I don't have a family social net, and although I don't mind this route. I would prefer not to english teacher route.

with that said... is it hard to jump out of the JET program as your contract is ending?

Once I make the deep plunge to Japan... I know I won't have a home back here in the States anymore.

Do you need a Snickers? And,I suppose it doesn't REALLY matter as long as I get caught up to the present.

and how about the second part?

>> No.745935

>>745913
>how much of the Chief would you say is just him as himself in a costume?
It's mostly Arino being Arino. The whole Kacho thing is just a loose comedic premise. He reads episode intros off of cue cards, but he then goes right into ad-libs. He's a professional comedian, so he's used to just doing whatever he does spontaneously.

>> No.745940

>>745932
>and how about the second part?
It aired all at once in one two-hour part. Most uploads have it split into two parts in the middle of the arcade bit where he plays SF4 and Metal Slug.

>> No.745947

>>745932
Most of the time specials aren't even mentioned in the main series, so it doesn't really matter the order. And it's one part of 2 hours.

it makes you wonder where he finds the time for family, I mean I know he gets breaks for months on end, but when filming and doing his....comedy duo thing ( whatever that's supposed to be ) it seems as if there's basically no time for anything but work....

>> No.746053

He takes, what, two days for one gccx episode? And he shouldn't do his comedy duo everyday, so he has some space for games and family.

maybe it's just me, I see him do things like the 24hr special and gaming for 13-14 hrs at a time and I think to myself 'man what's he doing with the rest of his time' my own head canon making things more compressed then they actually are...
