There aren't really any "bosses" in classic Doom besides the cyberdemon, mastermind, and Icon of Sin. The bruiser bros at the end of episode 1 are more to introduce the barons, I wouldn't consider it a "boss fight".

For anyone interested, Grimbeard just did a longform review/retrospective of Darkwatch, an FPS from the mid 2000s that is the closest another shooter has come to Blood in terms of theme and aesthetic:

Doom 64 is a fun game, if you've got any experience with Doom, I would highly suggest to play on Watch Me Die difficulty, the highest, because the game is awkwardly barren and easygoing at any of the lower difficulties.

Doom 3 is what it is, it's very flawed, but I think there's an alright shooter in there. BFG Edition makes it a lot easier with a built in flashlight mod, and giving out far more health and ammo, so consider not playing on Easy.
The Shotgun in Doom 3 sucks so hard that it's not even funny, but on the other hand the Chainsaw is supreme and can be used to take on almost any enemy in the game (seriously, try it out, you can even fight Mancubodes and Hellknights with some fast enough movement).

You gotta use more ambushes. Simply having monsters behind a door is not good enough, try putting some on the ledge or a pillar and some to be roaming. You can keep player from funneling them through the door by making him ride the lift up or drop down in a pit.

I did a sort of challenge run recently: Veteran difficulty (NM is a meme), no lockers, no health stations, no soul cube besides final boss. Was still swimming in ammo. I can't imagine how people could complain about running out in this game, they had to deliberately waste magazines into nearby wall for that.
Btw, just found out you can kind of pistol/clean start each level by running it through console. It gives you guns you should have by this moment with minimal ammo. Off to another replay I guess.

I have it, its unlockable in the XBLA version of Wolf3D. I actually played it a bit last night. Good port but the music is strangely slower (4 beats slower to be exact)

The best classic FPS avatar item though? The classic Doomguy costume unlockable through Doom XBLA. My avatar has been wearing that for years. Doom 1/2 also had unlockable profile pics that were cool too, I use the closeup of the demon looking at the viewer on the cover of Doom 1.

Well in my opinion it was worth it back when it was new. Today however, yes you're right that the BFG edition isn't really necessary. It does include the Lost Levels and the expansion and has the flashlight mounted on the guns, I don't know if the new version of Doom 3 they sell now has all that or not.

My recommendation would be buy Doom 64 and pirate Doom 3 BFG or vanilla.

Revenants are just a good enemy. Moves fast and its melee attack is quick so it's actually threatening, putting pinkies to shame. I am super autistic about Doom 3, I think the definitive experience is the original release with the VariLight mod. It gives unique lights to all the weapons and adds a lot of personality to them. It's not compatible with the BFG edition though.

It should be done in the style of the Quake 2 slav and only exploratory in that way if it's something super obscure most haven't played here. Although Quake 2 slav would post a lot sometimes his posts were also done in an unobnoxious and easy to tune out way if you weren't interested.

While I can't say these style of posts don't belong, they DO cause the post counts to go up significantly causing threads to hit bump limit faster. Gameplay feels pretty balanced and this one I could definitely complete without saving in one run if I try hard enough.
Fighting cyberdemons seems little bit boring though, because I couldn't think of any way other than safely strafing round the corner for long enough until it's dead.

Also I'd like to notice so far I haven't seen a single map for HFFM that looked amateurish.
All look very professional and skillful, and some are among the most detailed maps I ever seen.

The really cool part about the touhou mod is that you as the player are totally antithetical to how the fairies behave and how the player character operates in the actual touhou games. You're a big tough tanky badass that can eat danmaku bullets for breakfast. I think the average bullet does like 5% damage armored. On top of that the Doom weaponry is just way more effective overall than the almost random bullet sprays generic fairies and bosses perform. It's a really nice contrast between the two games.

So, I have never played Duke it out in DC and I think its a better expansion than Life's a Beach. Am I in the minatory? Life's a Beach is unique (and has some cool levels), but the thing has so many "gotcha "moments. Brightmaps are just absolutely great, it's one of the modern features which actually fits well into the classic vanilla experience.

Just finished a map called Brutana. Really solid stuff and had great use of "crossfire" sections. Particularly the area in this SS, while fighting the boss mobs you can fall in the pit and teleport back up and cause some infighting etc. After they're gone an ambush teleports in and if you try to go out into the center area to strafe, arachnotron crossfire will push you backwards though the semi maze tunnels on the sides where you pick off grunts, get flanked by hellknights as revenants move in slowly. Cocodemons will fill the center area and fire at you through openings in the tunnels while you choose targets trying not to get trapped.

There was a few but more and it seemed really well implemented. Overall a satisfying map. (great midi too)

I haven't completed that many custom .wads but I really liked the way this handled challenge and difficulty. Really great use of space with pseudo arena layouts, nice traps and swarms without ever going full slaughter. The only knock I would give is there being a little too much trial and error but IMO it never turned into complete bullshit

There's a separate mod for the shotgun that tightens its spread, "improved shotgun mod." I'll warn you tho that the game is kind of balanced around the shotgun sucking, it becomes really easy even on veteran with a tight spread. You can one-shot imps and zombie troopers from down the hallway. That sounds nice at first, but the game has a way lower enemy count than other Doom titles, and most things dying in one shot will make it really obvious.

With all that said, after you patch out all the bugs, and if you disable the AI companions, the game is actually kind of good, not the best ever, but it's overall fun and enjoyable, for the most part. I've heard that the multiplayer deathmatch was actually supposed to be particularly good (haven't tried it), and the game's strongest suit, and that's something I'm willing to believe, given that nobody is a greater and more serious deathmatch fanatic than John Romero.

So, Dai-Katana is not crown jewel, but it's also not really a turd either, it's more like a gem with some rough edges left, and not the most skilled cuts, and you couldn't tell it was a gem at first because it was covered in poo, but you rinsed it off with a garden hose to see its true nature and value, which is not insubstantial.

It's a bit like how E.T for the Atari 2600 is called WORST GAME EVER!!!11!1, when it's more like just a mediocre game brought down below average by bugs and shitty rushed coding (though with some novel aspects to it). The real problem with E.T was more the ridiculously bad economics and logistics of the whole project, and really that problem was represented in many other of Atari's games (even the ones that sold really well and got great reception), meaning it was just one of many symptoms of their larger problems as a company, and that E.T not existing would not have protected Atari from financial cardiac arrest. The landfill part turned out to be sort of true, though.

Yeah, but what people kept saying was that they made a massive landfill for just E.T cartridges, when in reality, one of Atari's most fundamental problems was that they would produce way more stock than they could hope to sell, for basically ALL of their products.
Computers, consoles, joysticks, peripherals, good games, bad games? They always made way too fucking much, so even if something was a great financial success they would lose money, and the landfill was straight up a dump of unsold stock of all kinds, they emptied an entire warehouse of products to get rid of them, because they could not sell them, and keeping them in storage costed money they couldn't afford.

There's also the notion that the entire industry almost died, which it never did, people always wanted videogames, regardless of what retailers may have thought for the time. The primary sufferer of the crash was Atari themselves, and the end result was always just that there would be a slump in the North American home console market (computer games and arcades were doing fine as usual), and then someone else who had good and new videogames would come and exploit the massive void left. If Nintendo hadn't done it, then Sega or Namco could very well have done it instead.

So I just beat E1 of Blood. I was using Blood GDX and after I beat Cheogh it just went straight to the credits and back to the menu. I didn't get the cutscene of Caleb burning Ophelia's body.

I went to Fresh Supply and used the calgon cheat to skip to the last level of E1 and then used it again and same thing, it just took me to the credits and back to the menu.

Anyone know why the cutscene didn't play?

Ought to be. If it doesn't work, you could also copy my Blood.ini and paste it in your Blood folder to replace yours since all I did was point the cutscene paths to the right folders. You'd also have to take the "movie" folder and put it in your Blood folder.

There might be a way to make that happen with a single linedef action, but I'm too tired to research that for you on the spot.

However, what you can do is to build a VooDoo action which loops with a silent teleporter, and the switch, or whatever linedef you use to set the VooDoo doll loose on his conveyor, is a repeatable door or lift switch which is timed to let the doll through, but to then reset before the doll has teleported back at the beginning of his track again.
You could even tie a key lock to this functionality if you wanted to.
