Want me to be honest as to why I don’t personally like it? I’m 25 so the whole “it’s new” doesn’t apply to me since i had to play it years later. The story is bland, there isn’t much of a soundtrack, the enemy variety isn’t anything special, nor are the weapons and the game is call of duty levels of linear. The platforming is nice and there’s nothing awful about the game but I think it’s interesting when people praise the hell out of it when games like system shock 2 came out only a year later and are so much more fun to play.

Yeah, it was the best game released in 1998.

What else was there? Unreal just imitated the stale 'stuck on a spaceship' design from doom & quake.
HL was fucking phenomenal in comparison. Sound work was distinctive, had memorable, well-voiced characters, fresh narrative that felt realistic. Gunplay was sharp, uniquely responsive and creative. Great artstyle & visuals.
It's really impossible to make any criticism of HL that holds water. It probably would be the best FPS of all time if Doom wasn't a technical marvel and a historical milestone.

People made a big deal about multiplayer and the mods like Sven's coop, but for me? Nothing beats the single player campaign. Wandering alone in creepy industrial spaces, where the only noise you might hear is a whirring fan or a bullsquid shooting acid in the distance.

Unreal had much better ambience. It is the game that got me to shell out $$$ for twin Voodoo cards so I could drink in the lush alien environments. Half-Life was about barren industrial hallways.
Also, Unreal had none of the crappy do-or-die platforming that was in Half Life. This has no place in a 1st P shooter, especially one where you have no feet.

I'm a Xen apologist actually, and regularly chime in with my disagreeing when people complain about it. I think the reason most people hate Xen is first person platforming, but that's something that's never bothered me, because I always felt the movement mechanics in Quake and Half-Life are very generous and easy to use.
